197: Financial Therapy: Should You Try It? with Thomas Faupl, LMFT

Welcome to episode 197 of Profit Boss® Radio! In this episode, we’re talking about financial therapy: what it is, how it works, and if you should try it. Couples and families find themselves in conflict over money all the time. They struggle to communicate effectively when it comes to money, working toward common goals, and sharing values to ensure long-term financial success and a fulfilling life. Today’s guest, Thomas Faupl, LMFT, is here to help address these challenges. Thomas is a private practice therapist specializing in trauma and financial therapy for individuals, couples, and families. While he was in grad school, he worked as a certified consumer credit counselor for Consumer Credit Counseling of San Francisco, and he’s counseled hundreds of people to help solve issues around personal finance. If you’ve ever found yourself arguing about money with your spouse, parents, kids, or extended family, you’re definitely not alone. In this episode, Thomas shares the most common issues people have with money, how to overcome them, why financial therapy is an emerging field in psychology, and why it might be right for you. Here’s what you’ll find out in this week’s episode of Profit Boss® Radio: Why it’s so hard for a traditional therapist to solve issues around money. The main issues that Thomas sees in his personal practice–and why the opposites that attract in relationships can create stressful money situations. The questions Thomas asks clients to help identify potential issues and boundaries without being forceful or manipulative. Why so many people have traumas around money–and the tools you can use to unpack, process, and work through them. How gender conditioning around money can impact how couples handle their money–and how both financial advisors and therapists see relationships. 192: 5 Pillars of a 7-Figure Mindset with Ron Reich

Welcome to episode 192 of Profit Boss® Radio! Today, we’re talking about 7-figure mindsets–what it means to have a solid perspective on not just launching a business or making money, but all things entrepreneurial.  If you’re an entrepreneur, life can feel like an uphill battle, especially as you struggle to carve out your niche, find your place, and build/scale your first seven-figure business. Some may find themselves feeling unfulfilled, struggling to stay motivated, and even feeling consumed by self-loathing when the going gets tough. But that’s not what every entrepreneur experiences, and it’s not what you should, either.  To help us manage these thoughts and challenges, I’m joined by Ron Reich. Ron helps emerging experts build seven-figure businesses, and he’s also my launch coach. He’s a wealth of information, and he’s worked with some incredible names, including Hay House Publishing, Todd Herman, Selena Soo, Denise Duffield-Thomas, and Ryan Levesque–to name just a few. If you’re ready to stop struggling and finally understand how real entrepreneurs achieve breakthroughs and hit their goals, then this conversation is for you! Here’s what you’ll find out in this week’s episode of Profit Boss® Radio: Believe in yourself because if you don’t, nobody else will. How the mindset of an A Player is that they do what is necessary, they understand necessity and they never deviate from that. When a 7-figure entrepreneur decides they’re going to create something, they are focused and they remain focused until they achieve the goal. Asking for help or reaching out to those who are in a position to help you is not a weakness. The value of giving that extra 3% and going the extra mile, even with something as simple as making phone calls yourself to promote an event. The power of the “Antifragile” mindset and understanding that what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. How an A Player is ruthless, relentless and focused on controlling the things that are within their control. The difference between leading indicators vs lagging indicators. The value in setting aggressive, yet achievable goals. Take action, and stay on the path. Why the most successful high achievers are fantastic at implementing. Don’t procrastinate and wait until you’re in alignment. The sooner you make that phone call, the sooner you’ll get the results you’re looking for. Energy is power so stay focused on maximizing your energy, which will make you a far more productive person. Most people typically have 4-5 productive hours each day so getting the proper amount of sleep, eating healthy with daily exercise will help you get the most out of those hours. Never be afraid to get outside of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself because this is how you grow! 191: Teaching Kids About Money & Entrepreneurship with Rob Phelan

Welcome to episode 191 of Profit Boss® Radio! In this episode, we’re talking about how to teach your kids about the value of money and entrepreneurship.  Schools rarely teach financial responsibility, encourage entrepreneurship, or equip kids with the skills they need to understand our money systems. It’s why so many of us learned these lessons the hard way–and it’s why it’s so important to make sure our own children get a better financial education than we did. With that in mind, I’m thrilled to be talking to Rob Phelan. Rob’s a high school math and personal finance teacher by day, but by night, he’s the author of M is for Money, a book of financial lessons for kids, as well as the founder of Simple Startup, where he provides online coaching for 10-18 year old entrepreneurs.  In today’s episode, we’re talking about how to teach your kids about money and finance in ways that they’ll care about. We’ll also hear about some incredible companies founded by amazing kids, and help find ways to make sure that children have a better understanding about the value of money that you wish you had when you were young. Here’s what you’ll find out in this week’s episode of Profit Boss® Radio: The hard financial lessons that helped Rob learn about money in his 20s. Why kids don’t need good math skills anymore to have great money skills. The value of teaching kids financial independence over financial literacy. The importance of leaving a legacy for our children, and the value in teaching our children at an early age. The wonderful success story from a young girl who took Rob’s course and is still demonstrating a tremendous amount of entrepreneurial spirit. Why you don’t need to be all knowing–and how to encourage your kids to develop their own healthy relationship with money. 189: 529s: The Ultimate Education Savings Account with Patricia Roberts and Jen Rupp

Welcome to episode 189 of Profit Boss® Radio! In this episode, we’re talking about saving for college and career training–and how to use 529 plans to make this daunting task more manageable. There are a lot of reasons you might want to use a 529 plan. These plans allow Americans to save for higher education on a tax-advantaged basis. This means that as they grow in value, that growth isn’t taxed. So long as the money is withdrawn to pay for higher education in some form, you don’t owe tax on the value of the account either. This means more money for college, technical school, or a paid apprenticeship, as well as an added benefit that many people can take off their state tax obligations in a number of places. Joining us to talk about 529 plans are Patricia Roberts and Hendershott Wealth Management’s very own, Jen Rupp. In the first half of this episode, you’ll meet Patricia, who’s the author of Route 529: A Parent’s Guide to Saving for College and Career Training with 529 Plans. You’ll then hear from Jen Rupp, who’s the head cash flow coach in my coaching program, as well as an expert on 529 plans herself. If you’re ready to learn about some great ways to take the pain out of saving for college, this episode is jam-packed with information that will help you prepare to take the first steps. Here’s what you’ll find out in this week’s episode of Profit Boss® Radio: Why you can create a 529 plan in any state–and which states offer the greatest benefits for residents. How you can legally use funds in 529 accounts for expenses far beyond tuition, including apartment rent, certificates, and even computer equipment. Why you should still consider opening a 529 for your kids, even if you have no idea if they’re going to go to college (or they hit the jackpot and receive a full ride scholarship). How your employer can help you prepare for the costs of higher education. What it means to superfund a 529–and how to legally put as much as $150,000 in a single year into these accounts. The rules of the road for investing when it comes to 529s.
