#316 Lauren Fleshman, 5x NCAA and 2x National Champion Runner and Author of NYT Bestseller Good for a Girl, on Women Competing in a Sports System Designed for Males and Her Journey n Professional RunningLauren Fleshman final
Lauren Fleshman is one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times and Runner’s World. She is the brand strategy advisor for Oiselle, a fitness apparel company for women, and the co-founder of Picky Bars, a natural food company. She is the author of the NY Times Bestseller Good for a Girl, an extraordinary look at female athletes and the struggles they face in a male dominated world. As the book description says, “Fleshman’s story of falling in love with running as a girl, being pushed to her limits and succumbing to devastating injuries, and daring to fight for a better way for female athletes. Long gone are the days when women and girls felt lucky just to participate; Fleshman and women everywhere are waking up to the reality that they’re running, playing, and competing in a world that wasn’t made for them. Drawing on not only her own story but also emerging research on the physiology and psychology of young athletes, of any gender, Fleshman gives voice to the often-silent experience of the female athlete and argues that the time has come to rebuild our systems of competitive sport with women at their center. Written with heart and verve, Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life, a raw personal narrative of growth and change, and a vital call to reimagine sports for young women.” This is an extraordinary conversation about women in sport, raising and coaching female athletes, and finding your voice and your soul in a world that devalues the humanity of so many. We were blown away by this book, and you will be as well. You can grab it here. Connect with Lauren at www.LaurenFleshman.com REGISTER NOW! #313 Some Thoughts on Parent Engagement, Building Trusted Relationships, and Coach/Parent/Athlete Accountability with John O'Sullivan
This week John shares his thoughts after two weeks on the road visiting college teams and conducting some parent and coach workshops on some topics that have come up a lot recently. Quite a few coaches have asked about parent engagement and how to work with those parents who just don't get it, and John shares his ideas around building trust, and making deposits in the trust bank so you can make withdrawals at a later date when you do screw up, or have to be a bit more demanding. He discusses his thoughts on communication, some tools to get parents, athletes and coaches more aligned, and then the concept of accountability being a two way street, something that takes great courage, and also something that should not be viewed as a negative. He mentions the work of a group called The Program, you can learn more about them here. REGISTER NOW! #307 How Adults Take the Joy Out of Sports, and How We Can Fix It
This week we are doing something a little different on the podcast. We had a last minute guest cancellation, so this week we decided to discuss one of our recent blog posts that just went a but viral, "How Adults Take the Joy Out of Sports , and How We Can Fix It." The release of this blog coincided with the drama around the US Men's National Soccer team that gained international headlines when parents of a US Player (Gio Renya) made a complaint against the coach Gregg Berhalter after their son's behavior during the recent World Cup was called into question. This podcast is not a rehash of that situation, which is just incredibly sad on many levels. It is a discussion of the blog post and the ways in which parents can suck the joy out of sports, and a breakdown of the six things often loving parents and coaches do that lead kids to quit, burnout and dropout. They are: Parent Sideline Coaching Joystick coaching/yelling instructions from the sidelines Disrespecting officials Questioning the coach Commenting on teammates play The Ride Home Drop us a line and let us know how you liked this new format this week. It is not a permanent change, but something we can explore doing a bit more in the future for sure. SAVE THE DATE: The 2023 Way of Champions Conference will be held August 4-6, 2023 at Colorado Academy in Denver, CO. Click here to learn more, registration will open January 1, and we will be announcing guest speakers and other conference related events soon. Its going to be amazing to be back in person in 2023!
