22. Ep. 5 - The Beauty of Breathing - The Importance of Nasal Breathing and Rhinomanometry
In this episode, Dr. Martha Cortes and Dr. Jenny Hobson will be interviewing Dr. Karen Parker Davidson, RN, an expert in rhinomanometry. Rhinomanometry measures air pressure and the rate of airflow during breathing. These measurements are then used to calculate nasal airway resistance which is important in the field of airway treatment. So many of us don’t realize that our noses are actually the problem, and we need to work on improving the ability to breathe out of it.Many of us have a bend in our nose called a deviated septum which narrows our nasal passages. Slowly but surely, this causes us to breathe through our mouth and the beginning of an airway compromise. Learn about the history of rhinomanometry, what normal values look like and where to find this testing. Dr. Davidson will review the key output parameters and what the data means. ______________________________________ABOUT OUR GUEST: Dr. Karen Davidson has held many positions in the medical device industry for more than 25 years, specifically in the ENT and Sleep markets, in addition to more than 30 years of clinical experience including service as a Flight Nurse in the United States Air Force Reserves and committee member for various Otolaryngology meetings. Dr. Davidson serves as the Vice President at GM Instruments, Ltd. with a special interest in and published on the technology of objective nasal measurements, nasal physiology, clinical application, reimbursement, health economics, and health policy. Dr. Davidson is a national speaker for the series “The Nose Knows: Nasal Function and Resistance”. She is a coauthor of three books and currently writing as a contributing author in a pediatric airway book on nasal function and resistance for release in 2022 and 2023. _____________________________________ At Airway Circle we offer a safe and supportive space for like-minded professionals to connect, collaborate and share information regarding airway-related issues and whole-body health. Our website:Support the showABOUT OUR HOST: Renata Nehme RDH, BSDH, COM® has been a Registered Dental Hygienist since 2010. Dear Momma – This is the podcast for moms seeking community, connection and compassion while on their health journey. Join for laughs, hacks and health information. Make sure to click follow to be reminded when a new episode comes out , I hope you enjoy the show About Our Guest: Ronda Holman is The Airway Champion (@the_airway_champion) at least that’s how you’ll know her if you’re on TikTok! She is a 23 year US Airforce trained dental assistant who has spent her entire career looking at airway disorders and their negative effects on the mouth. She has dedicated the last 4 years to helping patients and strangers understand the negative effects of oral breathing on their oral health. Ronda not only has a passion to help people discover the root cause of so many non-communicable diseases, but she grew up with an undiagnosed airway disorder herself. After connecting the signs to the symptoms it is her mission to help others learn to see the signs so they can advocate for themselves. Many people do not understand the biomechanics of breathing. Nor do they understand the detrimental effects over-breathing/mouth breathing has on sleep quality. Ronda had extraction retraction orthodontics completed when she was 12 years old. She was diagnosed with upper airway resistance syndrome when she was 37 years old. Ronda then made a choice to either live with struggling to breathe during sleep every night and continue to watch her oral health decline or make a change to improve her airway health. She shares her passion every day to help people understand the difference between sleep and quality sleep and its inter-relationship between airway health and breathing. 14. Ep. 3 of Airway Answers: Expanding Your Breath of Knowledge with Dr. Bill Hang
Dr Bill Hang graduated from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry and the University of Minnesota Orthodontic program where he briefly taught orthodontics. After about 7 years of having a traditional orthodontic practice, he became dissatisfied with the faces he was producing and set out to learn and develop techniques that would produce the best facial balance. Bill then became aware of the significant positive affects some of his treatments had on the airway. This opened up a whole new aspect of orthodontics - maximizing the airway for ALL orthodontic patients and specifically treating patients with sleep disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Hang, a staunch advocate of Myofunctional Therapy, emphasizes the importance of optimal oral posture for facial and airway development. Renowned locally and globally, he's received the AAPMD Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in airway optimization.
