195: Fit Is Creating Conditions For Belonging - with Dr. Miguel Martinez-Saenz, President at St. Francis College Brooklyn
Welcome back to America’s leading higher education podcast! This is The EdUp Experience President Series Episode #65. In this episode, sponsored by MDT Marketing, we welcome Dr. Miguel Martinez-Saenz, President at St. Francis College Brooklyn! Miguel says it like it is - the media has done a disservice to the value of higher education. However, the students also can't move aimlessly to the next step of higher education without a path. Miguel cautions labeling the student as a consumer - higher ed is the only industry where the "consumer" demands less than what they pay for; students need to take an active role in their learning. Finally, Miguel discusses why "fit" is creating the conditions for someone to believe they belong!
Dr. Miguel Martinez-Saenz became the 19th president of St. Francis College in September of 2017. Before coming to St. Francis College, Dr. Martinez-Saenz served as Provost at Otterbein University. In that position, he led a number of efforts especially in the context of internationalization that included a three-year global arts initiative funded, in part, by the National Endowment of the Arts. He also helped lay the foundation and developed partnerships with universities in South Africa, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Malaysia. Of significance, Dr. Martinez-Saenz was an administrative Fulbright Scholar (March 2016) through the Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Program.

188: Doubling Down on Residential Experience - with Dr. Sean Decatur, President, Kenyon College
This is The EdUp Experience President Series Episode #61. In this episode, sponsored by MDT Marketing, we welcome Dr. Sean Decatur, President at Kenyon College! With a recent 100M gift, Sean and Kenyon College are doubling down on the residential experience. Sean believes that liberal arts institutions are critical to a bright future - these institutions teaching writing skills and self-efficacy development. To Sean, the benefits of a small college are about connections and belonging, which is the hard work of diversity. Sean understands that actively recruiting students, and giving them a reason to stay, is important work for the future of Kenyon College.
Sean M. Decatur became the 19th president of Kenyon College on July 1, 2013. Shortly after arriving in Gambier, he led the community in a yearlong conversation to identify the strategic initiatives that would propel the College into its third century. The result is the Kenyon 2020 Plan, which lays out three priorities: continuing to attract a diverse group of academically talented students; preparing students for post-graduation success; and building community on campus, in the region, and among the worldwide Kenyon family. In October 2018, the College announced a $300-million comprehensive campaign to support these priorities, buoyed by a $75-million lead gift, the largest in the College’s history.
