429: Student Success & Equity through Quality Instruction - with Dr. Eduardo Padron, President Emeritus of Miami Dade College & Dr. Jonathan Gyurko, President & Co-Founder of ACUE
We welcome YOU back to America's leading higher education podcast, The EdUp Experience!
It’s YOUR time to #EdUp
In this episode, YOUR guests are Dr. Eduardo Padron, President Emeritus of Miami Dade College & Dr. Jonathan Gyurko, President & Co-Founder of the Association of College & University Education (ACUE), YOUR host is Dr. Joe Sallustio, & YOUR sponsor is Commencement: The Beginning of a New Era In Higher Education, coming fall 2022.
Faculty are, by & large, NOT prepared in teaching, not nearly to the extent they are prepared as subject matter experts or researchers. This is largely related to the professional & employment incentives in higher ed, which reward research, & not teaching. Eduardo & Jonathan talk about ACUE's collaborative effort to define essential teaching competencies called the "Effective Practice Framework". Online courses for faculty strengthen their teaching & the courses lead to a nationally recognized certification that is endorsed by the American Council on Education—a credential that’s changing how faculty are hired, promoted, & recognized!
An American by choice, Eduardo Padrón arrived in the United States as a teenage refugee in 1961. He is the President Emeritus of Miami Dade College (MDC), having served as its President for almost 25 years. He is credited with elevating MDC, the largest degree granting institution in America, into a position of national prominence among the best and most recognized U.S. colleges and universities. An economist by training, Dr. Padrón earned his Ph.D. from the University of Florida. In 2018, he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, one of America's oldest and most prestigious organizations. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S.
Jonathan Gyurko is President & Co-Founder of the Association of College & University Educators (ACUE) which advances student success & equity through effective instruction. Prior to ACUE, Gyurko spent more than two decades leading mission-driven efforts to create & expand educational opportunities of the highest quality for students at all levels of learning in the United States and around the world.
