Joyce P. Jacobsen became the 29th president of Hobart College and the 18th of William Smith College on July 1, 2019. Previously the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Wesleyan University, Jacobsen is a renowned scholar of economics, an award-winning teacher and a skilled administrator. With more than three decades of experience taking on increasingly complex roles in higher education, Jacobsen received the unanimous recommendation of the Presidential Search Committee and the unanimous vote of the Colleges’ Board of Trustees. She is the first woman to serve as president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

In this amazing episode of The EdUp Experience, we have the honor of speaking with Dr. Chris McCaghren, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Higher Education Programs, U.S. Department of Education. Over the last year, ED has worked very hard to get funds out to higher ed institutions amidst disruptions. Chris's team works to distribute CARES Act funds; though higher ed has been challenged, he says we shouldn't be so surprised as institutions overcome adversity. Chris says it like it is - he discusses ROI and tells higher ed not to be afraid to disrupt the purity of our ivory tower.

Chris served as the executive vice president and provost, as well as professor of higher education leadership and policy, at the University of Mobile. Prior to being named provost at the University of Mobile, Chris served as dean of the College of Education at Anderson University and as assistant to the president for external programs and division head for the division of career and continuing studies at Samford University under his mentor Dr. Andrew Westmoreland. In addition, Chris spent two years serving Congressman Spencer Bachus (AL-6, retired) and the great people of the state of Alabama as special assistant to the congressman.
Chris holds a doctorate from Vanderbilt University in higher education leadership and policy, a master of theological studies from Beeson Divinity School, and a double major undergraduate degree in communication studies and classics from Samford University.

In this episode of The EdUp Experience, our guest is Dr. Rusty Monhollan, President & Executive Director at South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. We talk with Rusty about a host of topics in higher education including CV-19's effect on institutions in South Carolina, what the outlook is considering possible institutional closures/mergers, the overall value of higher education, and SCCHE's commitment to workforce readiness in the state.
Rusty Monhollon is President and Executive Director of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. He began his duties there in July 2019.
Before coming to South Carolina, Monhollon was the Assistant Commissioner for Academic Affairs at the Missouri Department of Higher Education. There he oversaw the design, implementation, and monitoring of public policies related to academic programs, assessment of student success, and institutional performance. He led the Missouri Reverse Transfer Initiative, which resulted in more than 1,000 students receiving associate degrees.

As the second Asian-American ever to lead a City University of New York campus, find out why Wu only has eyes on Queens College. From his time teaching at Howard University, which comes with a very interesting set of circumstances, to the passion Frank has for dispelling Model Minority Theory, Wu takes us on a journey of commitment and focus as he represents Asian-Americans and people of color in the workplace.
Frank H. Wu was named president of Queens College, The City University of New York (CUNY), effective July 2020. Wu previously served as chancellor and dean, and then William L. Prosser Distinguished Professor at University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. Before joining UC Hastings, he was a member of the faculty at Howard University, the nation’s leading historically black college/university (HBCU), for a decade. He served as dean of Wayne State University Law School in his hometown of Detroit, and he has been a visiting professor at University of Michigan; an adjunct professor at Columbia University; and a Thomas C. Grey Teaching Fellow at Stanford University. He taught at the Peking University School of Transnational Law in its inaugural year and again a decade later, and at Johns Hopkins University twice.

Currently, she is developing programs and industry partnerships intended to resolve highly complex training issues among professionals in Engineering and Technology, Business and Management, BioScience, Education, and Design. Her objective is to assist these industries with closing skills gaps while reducing diversity, equity, and inclusion disparities.
