177: A Focus on Completion - with Dr. Bridget Burns, Executive Director, The University Innovation Alliance
In this fantastic episode of The EdUp Experience, sponsored by Element 451, we talk with Dr. Bridget Burns, Executive Director of the University Innovation Alliance. Helping low-income, first-generation, and students of color is not something universities have typically been good at. The University Alliance is focused on completion - who is completing and who is not. Higher education was never designed around students; the entire traditional infrastructure of colleges and universities was designed around faculty, which were the intellectual capital of the institution. UIA works to deconstruct and rebuild the operations around students and innovation to accomplish the goals of helping society - by helping the low-income, first-gen, and students of color. The pandemic has, however, hit students and faculty hard. It's time to innovate further, according to Bridget.
For the past decade, Dr. Bridget Burns has advised university presidents, system chancellors, and state and federal policy leaders on strategies to expand access to higher education, address costs, and promote completion for students of all backgrounds. Named one of the “16 Most Innovative People in Higher Education” by Washington Monthly, she is the founding Executive Director of the University Innovation Alliance (UIA). The UIA is the groundbreaking national consortium of public research universities igniting a movement through their collaborative work (innovate together, scaling “what works”, & broadly diffusing what they learn) to close their achievement gaps and improve outcomes for all students. The UIA was developed during Dr. Burns's tenure as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellowship at Arizona State University.

176: The Impact of the University of Florida - with Dr. W. Kent Fuchs, President, University of Florida
This is The EdUp Experience President Series Episode #57. In this episode, sponsored by MDT Marketing, we welcome Dr. W. Kent Fuchs, President at the University of Florida! We are joined by special guest host John Farrar, Director of Education at Google. We talk to Dr. Fuchs about the impact of the University of Florida, both on students and the local economy. Kent discusses the importance of student belonging, which includes the more than 1000 clubs created by students to create community. Add to this the discussion around marketing, messaging, and the goal of the University of Florida to get to 10,000 online students or more. We ask Kent about future population goals, you might be surprised by his answer. Kent is very clear about creating an environment at UF that transcends the expected and creates learning opportunities by matching students up with others from different backgrounds and countries when possible. This is NOT the episode to miss.
Dr. Kent Fuchs became the 12th President of the University of Florida in January 2015. Building on many years of excellence and focused leadership, the university has reached its goal of joining the nation’s top-ten public research universities.
Dr. Fuchs has since set UF on a path to joining the top-five public research universities and becoming the nation’s number one university for comprehensive excellence. UF is working toward those goals through the creation of 500 new faculty positions, the addition of advanced and beautiful university facilities, and an ongoing $3 billion fundraising campaign.

175: Trust is a Strategic Asset - with Henry Stoever, President & CEO, AGB
In this EdUp Embedded episode, sponsored by FRANK., Joe talks one-on-one with the President and CEO of the Association of Governing Boards (AGB), Henry Stoever. Henry gives an absolute masterclass regarding higher education governing boards. He discusses the three main components of effective board operations - composition, mindset, and action. The macro roles of an effective board are to hire, motivate, and incentivize the President of a college or university and to collaboratively develop the strategy. The "noses in, fingers out" functioning of an effective board allows for financial stress testing and scenario planning. However, governing boards need to spend more time understanding marketing and planning - the price to value proposition. Don't miss this episode!
Mr. Henry Stoever brings to AGB a deep understanding of the importance of citizen governance and a wealth of experience in building on the strengths of a member-focused organization. In Mr. Stoever’s previous position at National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), he oversaw marketing, partner relations, and board-development teams, helping to provide insights on critical issues that shape board agendas for the largest association of corporate directors in the United States.

Javice estimates her company has helped more than 300,000 students get $7 billion in financial aid over the past two years. Her investors included U.S.-Israeli investment fund Aleph Venture Capital (which previously invested in WeWork and insurance start-up Lemonade), Reach Capital, former Uber advocate Bradley Tusk’s Tusk Ventures, and Slow Ventures.
