Tell Them About the Dream! (Vitality Boost Episode)

On the afternoon of August 28, 1963, with a quarter million people in attendance, Dr. Martin Luther King was working his way through the speech he’d composed with advisor Clarence Jones when everything changed. African-American gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, sitting just a few yards to his left, shouted “Tell them about the dream, Martin!” Dr. King took note, paused, slid his notes on the podium to the side, and improvisationally launched into the speech that would help change the course of history.  Info re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here. Cancer and Exercise: Latest Evidence and Insights (Kristin Campbell, PhD)

The number of cancer survivors in the US alone exceeds 15.5 million—a figure expected to double in the coming decades. The general role of exercise for our health & wellbeing, but what about for the individual in the midst of or the tail end of the cancer journey – does it play an important role there? If so, in what ways? Why isn’t it generally emphasized as part of the treatment protocol? And what recent advancements in the research might be changing that historical trend? Today’s guest, Dr. Kristin Campbell, has spent her career diving into these and related questions. She holds a PhD in exercise physiology, a license in physical therapy and is a professor at the University of British Columbia where she holds an appointment in the Cancer Control Program. Her research focuses on the role of exercise in cancer prevention, rehabilitation and survivorship. I had an opportunity to hear her lecture in person recently and was very happy when she agreed to join us here as a guest. I have a feeling this is one of those episodes you’re going to want to share with family and friends.Links from Dr. Campbell:The Bone Metastases & Exercise (BME) Hub:   https://bit.ly/BMEHubCancer Exercise resource page:  https://cancerexercise.med.ubc.caMoving Through Cancer (initiative of ACSM Exercise is Medicine; with registry of programs) https://www.exerciseismedicine.org/eim-in-action/moving-through-cancer/2019 Exercise Guidelines for People living with a prior cancer diagnosis (open access at MSSE):  https://journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/fulltext/2019/11000/exercise_guidelines_for_cancer_survivors_.23.aspxInfo re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here. Is Delayed Gratification Overrated? (Jacqueline Rifkin, PhD)

Delayed gratification. When it comes to health, wellness and high performance, it’s the holy grail, right? Well, not so fast.      Back in 1970, psychologist and Stanford professor Walter Mischel (‘mishel”) performed the marshmallow study. It purported to show that children who were able to delay gratification by choosing not to eat a marshmallow when left alone in a room in order to earn 2 marshmallows went on to garner greater success across a range of areas, including school and careers. It’s been a cornerstone concept for speakers, coaches and consultants for decades. But can it go too far? Today’s guest, Dr. Jacqueline Rifkin has spent her career answering that question, studying how we manage our resources, including time, money and even experiences. Her findings – which she recently shared in a fascinating Wall Street Journal article – may not exactly align with what you’ve been taught. Maybe there is a time and a place to eat that marshmallow afterall. We’ll talk about the other side of delayed gratification, the specialness spiral and more, and I think you’ll be surprised, and perhaps encouraged, by what she has to share. Dr. Rifkin has her PhD in Marketing from Duke University and has done extensive work in both marketing and consumer research market. She is an assistant professor of marketing at Cornell University, teaching consumer behavior at both the undergrad and graduate levels.Info re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here. Today’s interview w/ authors and emergency room physicians Dr. Adaira Landry and Dr. Resa Lewiss focuses on the concept of Microskills, which are built on a singular principle: Every big goal, complicated task, healthy habit, and even what we think of as character traits can be broken down into small, learnable skills that can be practiced and incorporated in real-time. Myth-busting Arthritis, Hip Replacements, Knee Replacements in Athletes and More (Surgeon HJ Luks)

5% of the US population will have a total hip replacement by age 80 and an additional 10% will have a total knee replacement. Those are big numbers that influence both athletes and non-athletes alike and creates natural curiosity on a number of fronts: Is it inevitable? Are there things we can do to reduce our odds? How quickly should we move forward when experiencing pain? How active can we be post-surgery? Today we’re fortunate to have orthopedic surgeon Dr. HJ Luks joining us to discuss these questions and more. He’s the author of Longevity, Simplified, is a great follow on Twitter, and while I’ve known hundreds of surgeons over my years as a physical therapist, Luks brings a fresh, new, myth-busting perspective that I’m certain will open your eyes to new options you’d not previously considered.Info re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here. David Goggins: A Closer Look

David Goggins is an incredibly fascinating individual, with a life story that reads like the script from a Rocky film. The retired Navy Seal, best-selling author and YouTube no-nonsense motivator endured an abusive childhood and a learning disability early on. At age 19 he spent 4 years in the Air Force but struggled after being discharged, as his weight ballooned from 175 to 290 and he felt he was in a dead-end job. At 24, he lost 100+ lbs, became a Navy Seal and later also graduated from Army Ranger School. As an endurance athlete, he’s completed over 60 ultra-marathons, triathlons and ultra-triathlons, at one time held the world record for pull-ups in 24 hours with 4,030, is the author of 2 best-selling books and has millions of followers on social media. He’s spent the past 2 decades carrying the torch of no-nonsense, “stay hard” advice for countless millions through his books and social media outlets. If high intensity is your thing, you’re likely a Goggins fan. I’ve been intrigued by him for years, as we’ve raced many similar events and my PhD focused on the subject to which Goggins is most closely associated: mental toughness. In this special episode of the Catalyst 360 podcast, we’ll be taking a closer look at the strategies Goggins admonishes, how the science supports and occasionally conflicts with his guidance, and what it might mean for you in your own life moving forward. The Batman Effect: How Changing Our Identity Boosts Our Results (Stephanie Carlson, PhD)

3 Big Ideas from Dr. Carlson:Identifying with/as someone else (e.g., Batman) improves impulse control in children.Psychological distancing, either via time (e.g., delaying email response 24 hours) or space (considering what someone else might do - including Batman!) can minimize the negative effects of emotions in both our personal and professional lives.Reflection about our futures enhances our executive function as adults.“Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman – then always be Batman.” That tongue in cheek quote always makes me laugh, but it turns out to have some fascinating truth to it, as children impersonating Batman in their work demonstrated notably increase perseverance. Today’s guest, Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Dr. Stephanie Carlson was one of the researchers who helped bring that discovery to the forefront. We’ll dig into what that, and other intriguing elements of her research, means for us in our daily personal, professional and athletic lives in today’s discussion. She’s also doing some pioneering work on how we can tap many recent cognitive findings to improve our productivity and overall performance so get ready to take some notes as we dive into the latest findings here on the Catalyst 360 podcast! For more information about Dr. Carlson and her research, please seehttps://reflectionsciences.com/https://reflectiveperformanceinc.com/Info re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here.
