Redefining Rich: Understanding and Creating True Wealth (Dr. Shannon Hayes)
Are you rich? While our default answer likely focuses on the way in which we currently evaluate our financial situation, is money what makes us rich? Is it possible to effectively address realistic short and long-term financial goals without sacrificing our health, relationships, ethics or other elements that are important to living a full life? Or are we stuck having to choose between our money and our life?Welcome to the latest episode of the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is Dr. Shannon Hayes, author of the thought-provoking book Redefining Rich, which I expected to be filled with the typical blah blah blah generic advice we’ve all heard a hundred times. Instead, I was left considering a new way for Suzanna and I approach that choice between our money and our lives. Dr. Hayes and her husband walked away from their career paths and chose to forge a life on her family’s frost-plagued mountain farm, starting up a small café in town. They built a business – and a life – from which we can all glean valuable guidance, regardless of our current setting, career path, or business start-up status. And, along the way, you might just discover a secret or two that brings true living back to this thing we call life. Here's the link to access the Quality of Life Statement workbook she mentions in the interview. For more information about the Catalyst Community, earning your NBHWC-approved health & wellness coach certification, the annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium and much more, please see https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ or reach out to us Results@CatalystCoachingInstitute.comLooking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Hungry Brain: How to Rewire Our Food Choices (Dr. Stephan Guyenet)
"I'd do anything to be healthy, except eat right and exercise." We laugh when the comedian shares this insight from the stage, but then cringe when we realize the truth of that in our own lives and the lives of those around us. What is going on? Intriguingly, our brains are finely tuned based on a world that for most – no longer exists. Extremely palatable foods combining sugar, salt, fat and the like didn’t exist until recently in human history. As such, instincts designed to prevent starvation have carried us into a lifetime of obesity, diabetes and more. So what can we do?Welcome to the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is neuroscientist and best-selling author of The Hungry Brain, Dr. Stephan Guyenet. He has a bachelors degree in biochemistry, a PhD in neuroscience and completed a post-doctoral fellowship on the neuroscience of obesity and eating behavior. His research publications in scientific journals have been cited more than 2,100 times. He doesn’t simply identify the science behind why we do what we do. Instead, he provides key insights on how we – or our friends, coaching clients and others - can effectively change course and thus change our lives for the better. How Our Perspective Influences Everything (Dr. Carly Hunt)
Don’t you just hate it when you don’t get a decent sleep? It seemingly throws off everything and ruins the day before it even gets started. And yes, the data appears to back that up. Sleep loss has been shown to increase inflammatory markers throughout the body. But wait a minute. What if there’s another layer to the discussion (and the data analysis)? What if a positive approach to life, something called trait positive affect (or PA) in the literature changes the equation? What if the way we look at that loss of sleep (and other things in life). Could our mental state buffer the proinflammatory effects of various forms of stress?Welcome to the latest episode of the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is Dr. Carly Hunt. Dr. Hunt is a licensed psychologist, has a PhD in Counseling Psychology and a Masters in Kinesiology and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Biobehavior pain research at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is the founder of Present Mind Consulting and we discovered her when our son Joshua, who’s currently in med school with a special interest in sleep medicine, came across her research on the influence of affect on sleep loss. The Conflict Opportunity: Best-selling author Amanda Ripley
Us vs. Them. The “other side” just doesn’t get it. Whether politics, work or even family, the confusion arises because we aren’t seeing how the conflict itself has taken over. High conflict is the invisible hand of our time, creating a good vs. evil type of feud. And it results in our brains behaving differently, crystalizing certainty in our own superiority and a head-shaking about those on the other side.Welcome to the latest episode of the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is Amanda Ripley, a New York Times bestselling author, an investigative journalist and co-founder of Good Conflict, a company that creates workshops and original content to help people get smarter about how they fight. Living Longer and Busting Medical Myths: Dr. HJ Luks
Legends about the Fountain of Youth have existed for millennia. In spite of rumors about discovery in Florida, the real fountain of youth comes from tapping into the growing research on longevity – the practical steps any of us can take to improve the quality – and potentially quantity – of the years we have remaining in this thing called life.Welcome to the Catalyst Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching Podcast. Today’s guest is Orthopedic surgeon and author Dr. Howard Luks. I first discovered Dr. Luks on Twitter. I’ve known hundreds of orthopedic surgeons over my 30+ years as a physical therapist, and this guy didn’t sound like any ortho I’d ever met. He encouraged skipping the MRI, holding off on surgery and more. His credentials were impeccable, and when he agreed to join us waaaaay back in Episode #70 to discuss orthopedic mythbusting, you made it one of our most popular episodes of all time. We’ve continued to communicate regularly over the years since, and with the release of his new book, Longevity, Simplified, we just had to get him back on the show. You’re going to love this one and likely send it to your cynical friends who still think running is bad for your knees, MRIs tell us everything and longevity is just based on luck. You can find his book Longevity Simplified at Howardluksmd.com/book or follow him on Twitter @hjluksLooking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Marriage Lessons from the Coopers' (not always smooth) 30 years
Are you married? Thinking about taking that step? Even for those who see marriage as a generally positive thing know it rarely – ok, it never – matches the fairy tale. Unlike the fairy tale version, there are no magic potions available. However, we’re hoping this special episode will provide a few ideas to tip the scales in a more positive direction for those who are either married, heading that direction, or have friends or clients who are looking for guidance along the way. Suzanna and I will be celebrating 30 years of marriage this month so thought it might be a good time to look back and consider some of the lessons learned over those 30 years, ranging from “Buy more toothpaste” and “Live in 3D” to “Rocky Balboa’s secret.” We don’t have “the answers,” but we thought maybe a few things we’ve picked up through the detours and dirt roads over the past 30 years might be of interest to those traveling a similar journey or pondering doing so in the future. Drug-free Strategies for Pain: Dr. Adriaan Louw
If you grew up a fan of the Rocky films, you’ll no doubt remember the classic scene in Rocky III when Clubber Lane (Mr. T) is asked his prediction for the match against Rocky. He glares into the camera and gives a single word answer: “Pain.” He was talking about the boxing match, but he could have been speaking about life. Pain is universal. For some, it may play a beneficial role – nudging us in a different direction before we create more of it. For others, it may rise to the level of dominating our thoughts and affecting our every decision on a day to day basis. But maybe there’s a different way to approach pain that could change it’s influence forever.Welcome to the Catalyst Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching Podcast. Today’s guest is Dr. Adriaan Louw, one of the world’s foremost expert on pain neuroscience and the integration of PNE – or Pain Neuroscience Education, which may be a key for those looking to break through the barriers pain and chronic pain has brought to daily life, physical pursuits and more.
