The Science of Free Will: Dr. Mark Solms

What if I were to tell you our conscious thoughts and resultant actions are not a reflection of simple sensory inputs - such as the air temperature as we step outside or the sight of an eagle flying overhead. Instead, it is how we FEEL about those sensory inputs that drives our complex decisions and actions. Your response to an external input may very well differ significantly from mine – not because we have a different sense of smell, touch, sight, sound or taste but because we FEEL differently about those sensory inputs. When it comes to health, wellness & performance, that’s a big deal!Welcome to the latest episode of the Catalyst 360 Podcast – your trusted resource for engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights.  Today’s guest is Dr. Mark Solms, one of the boldest thinkers in contemporary neuroscience and author of the fascinating book The Hidden Spring: A Journey to the Source of Consciousness. I think you’ll find today’s discussion will open your eyes about the way in which the brain functions in everyday life and change your understanding of your subjective experiences. And yes – as always, we’ll focus on the practical elements that will help us all to bolster our health, wellness & performance or that of our clients, co-workers and peers. For best-in-class board-certified coaching avail to employers, EAP organizations and wellness service providers, visit https://www.CatalystCoaching360.com or contact us Results@CatalystCoaching360.com For more information about the Catalyst Community, earning your NBHWC-approved health & wellness coach certification, the annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium and much more, please see https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ or reach out to us Results@CatalystCoachingInstitute.comLooking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Practical Tips to a Better Marriage Across the Generations

Marriage isn't easy and it isn't for everyone. But it doesn't hurt to tap into some guidance occasionally if you've decided it's for you. We’re hoping this special episode will provide a few ideas to tip the scales in a more positive direction for those who are either married, heading that direction, or have friends or clients who are looking for guidance along the way. Suzanna and I are in our 31st year of marriage and our 3 "kids" are in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year. So we thought it would be fun to combine our "lessons learned" from the whole gang! We'll kick off this episode with guidance from the 3 more recently married couples and then shift into the 10 1/2 lessons from the... well... older couple.  Those lessons range from “Buy more toothpaste” and “Live in 3D” to “Rocky Balboa’s secret.” We don’t have “the answers,” but we thought maybe a few things we’ve picked up through the detours and dirt roads over the past 30+ years (and insightful advice from the more recently married crew) might be of interest to those traveling a similar journey or pondering doing so in the future.Looking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Intriguing Science of Endurance: Dr. Alex Hutchinson

Years ago, a hot new book by one of my favorite columnists came out. I was leaving to speak at a conference taking place on a cruise ship (still my fav speaking engagement to date) but I couldn’t wait to dig in. So I contacted the author to see if it was possible to have an advanced copy shipped to the hotel and he made me a deal: he’d send me a PDF if I promised to buy a copy once it was available to the public. Done. I still have that PDF, covered with notes, underlines, asterisks and underlines. It didn’t hurt that his subject aligned closely w/ my PhD work, but the way he so effectively merged research grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go, even when that resulted in reading it on the beach during one of the cruise ship stops. Today we’ll dig into the curiously elastic limits of human performance with the writer whose work continues to shape the course of how we’re applying science here in the real world of endurance pursuits. Welcome to latest episode of the Catalyst 360 Podcast. Today’s guest is Dr. Alex Hutchinson, THE sweat scientist & author of one of my all-time favorite books Endure: Mind, Body, & the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance. He also has a PhD in physics & was a 2-time finalist in the 1500 at the Canadian Olympic Trials. He makes his home in Toronto and writes for Outside Magazine, Runners World, Wall Street Journal, NY Times and many others! You can follow him on Twitter @sweatscience (and he's definitely worth the follow!). Write YOUR Story - WSJ's James "Bob" Hagerty

What’s your story? It’s a question that opens the door to the story you want to tell. In contrast to a resume review, list of race results, or accomplishments of note, it provides you the freedom to reveal the elements of your life that color your canvas of time. It’s my favorite question to ask “soon to be friends” at a party or networking event and it’s a close cousin to the clear personal vision we discussed a few weeks back. Today, one of the world’s foremost weavers of life stories, James “Bob” Hagerty, will join us to share why writing our story can be so powerful – both for ourselves and our loved ones.Welcome to the latest episode of the Catalyst 360 Podcast – your trusted resource for the best in engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights.  Today’s guest, James “Bob” Hagerty has been a reporter and editor for more than 40 years and is the Wall Street Journal’s only full time obituary writer. His article “An Obituary Writer Writes One for Himself” drew an outpouring of reader responses, which inspired his intriguing new book: Yours Truly: An Obituary Writer’s Guide to Writing Your Story. For more information about the Catalyst Community, earning your NBHWC-approved health & wellness coach certification, the annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium and much more, please see https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ or reach out to us Results@CatalystCoachingInstitute.comTo tap into more insights from Bob Hagerty, please seehttp://yours-truly.jamesrhagerty.com/https://www.washingtonpost.com/books/2022/12/01/best-new-books-december/https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-way-you-tell-your-life-story-matters-start-now-11671992737?page=1https://www.wsj.com/articles/an-obituary-writer-writes-one-for-himself-11555683563?shareToken=st6ff6f87dabfd4834aa3a4fc10955cff0Looking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Rachel Cruze: More Money... Less Debt w/ Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace Concepts

Money. Tough subject. Different circumstances for everyone… critical for everyone. We choose careers and life paths based on it, experience sleepless nights and elevated blood pressure due to it, allow relationships to be influenced – and sometimes ended by it. Sermons are preached about it, countries divided by it and songs written about it, including one of my personal favorites by Chris Jansen, reminding us “money may not buy happiness… but it can buy me a boat!” 😊And yet – outside of the school of hard knocks, most of us are taught almost nothing about it. One notable exception to that has been Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, which started in 1994 and has since helped provide financial education to millions of people worldwide – especially in the area of reducing debt. Today we are incredibly fortunate to feature a discussion we had with someone who’s been there with Ramsey since the beginning and her insights might just help change the course of your financial life going forward.Welcome to the latest episode of the Catalyst 360 Podcast – your trusted resource for the best in engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights. Today’s guest is Rachel Cruze, best-selling author, radio personality and also happens to be the daughter of Dave Ramsey, founder of Financial Peace University. My guess? I think she’ll eventually take the lead as Mr. Ramsey steps back, but I guess we’ll wait and see. Regardless, we were thrilled to have Rachel join us as a special guest. For more information about the Catalyst Community, earning your NBHWC-approved health & wellness coach certification, the annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium and much more, please see https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ or reach out to us Results@CatalystCoachingInstitute.comLooking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Our choice of fitness activities bring a smile? Our professional pursuits reveal who we were truly meant to be? Understand Yourself & Others (includes live assessment w/ Dr. Linda Berens)

We hear a lot about becoming the “best version of ourselves.” But what version is that? How do we clarify our understanding of who we really are – at our core – and how we can most effectively open that best version up to the world, thus enhancing the positive impact we can have in our families, work settings, communities and world? Welcome to the latest episode of the Catalyst 360 Podcast – your trusted resource for the best in engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights. Today’s guest is Dr. Linda Berens – Dr. Berens and Dr. Cooper met 20 years ago when he attended an in-depth MBTI Certification program through her institute out in California. We was so impressed by her unique approach, we began integrating many of her insights into our trainings and eventually wrote a book together, which humorously brought out our very different interaction styles in the process 😊. She is the co-founder and lead architect for Interstrength who has been teaching professions since 1982 and is recognized internationally for her theoretical contributions to th field of psychological type and the development of user-friendly training materials used worldwide. We’ll be focusing today on her InterStrength CORE approach, which goes beyond “typology” and allows space for individuality, growth, realignment and understanding of patterns rather than boxing people into an “assessment label.” She’s even agreed to do a LIVE ASSESSMENT INTERVIEW W/ Dr. Cooper  as an example, which you’ll hear on the last half of the discussion. How to Create A Personal Vision for a Better Life

Accompanying video to this episode w/ examples available here: https://youtu.be/nCGMQWctPHw“For many, the big choices in life aren’t really choices; they are quicksand. You just sink into the place you happen to be standing.” Author David Brooks is credited with expressing those words, but we ALL know what it’s like to live them. We move through each day, letting the quicksand around our feet draw us in as the weeks, months and years pass by. Dreams fade out of sight; regrets accumulate and eventually we just feel “stuck.” It is what it is. Ahhh – what could have been. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We admire visionaries across all walks of life, those individuals who see past the day to day. Those who see the world differently – those who have identified their northern star and are steadily moving in that direction, regardless of the quicksand that grasps the rest of the world around them. These individuals are no more gifted or talented than the rest of us. Rather, they have a crystal clear vision of the person they are becoming and the future impact they are moving toward. That powerful, personal vision is a resource available to any of us who choose to tap into it. In this special episode, I’ll walk you through the preparation and the process that will allow you to create your own clear personal vision for the coming year. It will challenge, energize and inspire you. It will give you a reason to get out of bed in the morning, light a fire in your heart and provide a steady wind in your sails. In the end, it will help set you on a clear path to what might just be the most important year of you life. Welcome to this special episode of the Catalyst 360 Podcast, your trusted source for engaging, evidence-based, practical guidance to optimize your health, wellness, performance, and life!
