Alex Hutchinson, PhD: The Explorer's Gene

Exploration. The search for the unknown has shaped the history of our species, molding our behavior in ways we are only beginning to understand. And that understanding is about to come into focus for us today, thanks to today’s guest, best-selling author and one of my favorite writers, Dr. Alex Hutchinson. Alex is well known, both for his popular Outside Magazine columns on the topic of sweat science, and his exceptional book Endure: Mind, Body and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance. His book influenced the direction I took with my own PhD work. He first joined us waaaay back in 2019 – one of our first 20 episodes ever recorded – which now number over 350. He brings a fascinating background as an elite runner, a PhD in Physics and is basically who I want to be when I grow up – except he’s a decade younger than me.You’re going to love this discussion. SO many insights covering our draw toward exploration and what it means for high performance and life. I got a chance to read an early release of his new book: The Explorer’s Gene – and it is outstanding. I’ve underlined and scribbled all over it, which is a good sign. We’ll have a link to it in the show notes. You can find his new book, along with other valuable resources on his website at AlexHutchinson.netInfo re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here. Coaching & Counseling: Everything You Need to Know

Welcome to a special episode of The Coaching Lab, where we’re discussing a hot topic in the world of health & wellness coaching: Coaching and Counseling. What’s the difference? How do they complement one another? Can one replace the other? Does coaching have a role within employee assistance programs? Are there red flags to look for related to either of the two? With mental health garnering critical attention nationally, it’s a subject that must be addressed, whether for coaches, counselors, employers, EAP providers or the general public. Our guest, Suzanna Cooper, is both a licensed counselor and a nationally board-certified health and wellness coach and recognized nationally as a thought leader in the field. Her background includes two master's degrees and two licenses covering counseling and occupational therapy. In addition, she has combined this with advanced training in positive behavior change with a specialized focused on intrinsic motivation and motivational interviewing. Suzanna is also one of a very select group of individuals who have been invited to participate in the motivational interviewing network of trainers, a collection of the best and brightest minds from across the globe in this specialty area. She currently serves as the chief learning officer for the Catalyst Coaching Institute and speaks regularly at conferences and events nationwide. Personally, she's the mom to three adult children, married for 32 years to the luckiest man in the world and enjoys everything from hiking to skiing, paddleboarding to running, and especially hanging out with her granddaughters.Info re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here.
