She taught me my numbers, she took me to the bank and showed me how to use the ATM, she got me a checking account. My dad was into his boat and his cars, so my mom was really the one who was really organized and managed the household expenses well.” (03:18) (Carrie) “My dad did earn the money and he made good money at certain times in his life. But he really had no idea what he was spending. He really had no awareness or mindfulness around the spending. It was just, ‘money in, money out,’ and my mom was this gatekeeper, and I don’t think either of them had a grasp on what was possible.” (07:55) (Carrie) “In my opinion, and from my experience and education, if you go from one advisor to another, the portfolio shouldn’t be that different. They really shouldn’t. It’s a bit commoditized. I think a low-cost portfolio, passive tense, research shows tends to outperform.” (24:20) (Carrie) “It’s an exciting thing to talk about the hot stock of the day, but it doesn’t really ever get you the better returns in the long-term, I don’t think.” (28:46) (Carrie) “Finances are not just for the guys. Sometimes women are more savvy with that stuff than men. I think it really makes for a more balanced relationship.” (36:52) (Carrie) “Really it’s just saving. It’s living below your means, saving, and investing in a stock and bond portfolio for the long-run.” (45:45) (Carrie) “I care about my clients. I think that’s the best way to be a successful advisor is to care, because then you’re in it for the right reasons.” (47:36) (Carrie)Guest ResourcesCarrie’s BioMindful Money ResourcesFor all the free stuff at Mindful Money: https://mindful.money/resourcesTo buy Jonathan’s first book - Mindful Money: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Money-Practices-Financial-Increasing/dp/1608684369To buy Jonathan’s second book – Mindful Investing: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Investing-Outcome-Greater-Well-Being/dp/1608688763Subscribe to Jonathan’s Weekly Newsletter: https://courses.mindful.money/email-opt-inCapture the most important benefit of an advisor – behavioral support – without the 1% fee: https://courses.mindful.money/membershipFor more complex, one on one financial planning and investing support with Jonathan or a member of Jonathan’s team: https://www.epwealth.com/our-team/berkeley/jonathan-deyoe/Website: https://mindful.moneyJonathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathandeyoe🎙️Podcast Production & Marketing by FullCastBack to Podcast Homepage

I try to think of it that way rather than repelling it away from me.” (04:16) (Mike)“I just thought everybody around me was the same way. And so, I didn’t necessarily think about who was rich or who was poor. I knew whose dad owned the car dealership down the street and whose dad was the attorney, but my view of them was we’re equals.” (07:23) (Mike)“It gives me a really unique view and seat in looking at the world of masculinity and the world of issues women deal with, such as pay equity. So, I’ve had a unique view of that and I’m glad I did because it’s really opened my mind to what’s going on.” (25:33) (Mike)“Masculinity is more along the lines of being real, being authentic, and being vulnerable.” (27:06) (Mike)“Life is so short; it’s so tender. You never know when you’re gonna lose the people around you. And I don’t think we can ever lose sight of that. And as I get older, I tend to choose more wisely the people that I put around me or the people I’m exposed to. I like to say in my world, ‘I want more givers around me and fewer takers.’” (42:59) (Mike)“You gotta take control over your own life because nobody else is gonna look out for you. They’re worried about themselves. At the end of the day, you are in control of your mind, your body, what you say, and what you do. And if you don’t take action to be present and positive, nobody’s gonna want to be around you.” (50:00) (Mike)Guest ResourcesMike’s LinkedInMike’s EmailMike’s WebsiteMike’s FacebookMike’s TwitterMike’s InstagramMike’s YouTube ChannelMike’s PodcastMindful Money ResourcesFor all the free stuff at Mindful Money: https://mindful.money/resourcesTo buy Jonathan’s first book - Mindful Money: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Money-Practices-Financial-Increasing/dp/1608684369To buy Jonathan’s second book – Mindful Investing: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Investing-Outcome-Greater-Well-Being/dp/1608688763Subscribe to Jonathan’s Weekly Newsletter: https://courses.mindful.money/email-opt-inCapture the most important benefit of an advisor – behavioral support – without the 1% fee: https://courses.mindful.money/membershipFor more complex, one on one financial planning and investing support with Jonathan or a member of Jonathan’s team: https://www.epwealth.com/our-team/berkeley/jonathan-deyoe/Website: https://mindful.moneyJonathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathandeyoe🎙️Podcast Production & Marketing by FullCastBack to Podcast Homepage

072: Pete Alexander - Handling Stressful Situations with Grace & Success

Upcoming Event! How Can Mindfulness Help You Reach Financial Independence?Do you want to reduce money anxiety, but don’t know who to trust?Would you like to learn how to set up and manage your own retirement plan?Do you want to know how we create a passive income stream you can’t outlive? If yes, join us and learn how to answer the 4 critical financial independence questions:Am I on track for financial independence? What do I need to do to get on track? How do I design a mindful investing portfolio? How do I manage that portfolio and my income over time through changing markets?Learn more: https://courses.mindful.money/financial-independence-bootcampProfessor Pete Alexander has had a thirty-five year career that spans Sales and Marketing, being a college professor of Marketing, and running a small interior landscaping business called Office Plants by Everything Grows, where he’s still a majority owner. Professor Pete is also an expert in something that impacts all of our lives: stress. Today, Pete joins the show to share tips and best practices for coping with stress, the role of eustress, and the importance of gratitude and visualization.📺 Watch on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/Ex_I_ZfC9N4Key Takeaways00:55 – Jonathan introduces today’s guest, Pete Alexander, who joins the show to talk about how financial insecurity growing up instilled a fear-based money mindset 09:14 – The inspiration to write a book about stress 17:31 – Gratitude, visualization, and personal values 25:40 – Staggering statistics on stress and its effect on the body 30:10 – Understanding the LIGHTEN acronym 31:49 – Good stress vs. bad stress and the two flavors of stress 35:14 – One thing that a person under severe stress can do to reduce their stress levels and one thing to avoid doing 41:09 – One thing people don’t know about Pete that he would like them to know 43:10 – Jonathan thanks Pete for joining the show and lets listeners know where to connect with himTweetable Quotes“What I learned was that, when you don’t manage your money properly, that has a very strong effect on your kids.” (02:45) (Pete) “For me, my feeling is that I don’t want to be a burden for my kids. And so part of my strategy of ‘saving, saving, saving,’ is that I wouldn’t feel like I had to go ask them, down the road, if something happened to me.” (08:29) (Pete) “I sat there and I thought, ‘Oh my God. I’m trading my health for my career.’ And that is a very bad trade because, if you think about it, the reality is when you think about a time when you were really sick, did you feel like doing anything other than lying in bed? Probably not. And when you’re in that state, you’re no good to your career, to your business, or to the people you love, because you have no energy.” (15:30) (Pete) “Health became and remains the number one priority for me because, in my opinion, without your health, nothing else matters.” (23:32) (Pete) “One thing that stood out to me when I started doing my research was that the World Health Organization (WHO) called stress the number one health epidemic of the 21st Century.” (26:46) (Pete) “There actually is good stress, called eustress. That is stress where if you’re working on something that you are passionate or excited about, it’s the kind of stress that helps us get things done.” (31:52) (Pete) “The energy that we project out there in the universe, we’re gonna attract that same polarity back. And so when we project out negative energy, we are retracting back like energy. But if we send out positive energy - guess what - we’re gonna attract back that positive energy.” (34:37) (Pete)Guest ResourcesPete’s LinkedIn Pete’s YouTube ChannelPete’s Facebook Pete’s Twitter Pete’s BookPete’s Stress Relief ThoughtsOffice Plants by Everything Grows WebsiteLink to the Values Activity that is a true game changer for stressMindful Money ResourcesFor all the free stuff at Mindful Money: https://mindful.money/resourcesTo buy Jonathan’s first book - Mindful Money: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Money-Practices-Financial-Increasing/dp/1608684369To buy Jonathan’s second book – Mindful Investing: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Investing-Outcome-Greater-Well-Being/dp/1608688763Subscribe to Jonathan’s Weekly Newsletter: https://courses.mindful.money/email-opt-inCapture the most important benefit of an advisor – behavioral support – without the 1% fee: https://courses.mindful.money/membershipFor more complex, one on one financial planning and investing support with Jonathan or a member of Jonathan’s team: https://www.epwealth.com/our-team/berkeley/jonathan-deyoe/Website: https://mindful.moneyJonathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathandeyoe🎙️Podcast Production & Marketing by FullCastBack to Podcast Homepage

071: Jay Zigmont - Build the Life You Want: Life & Financial Planning for an Underrepresented Population

How do I manage that portfolio and my income over time through changing markets?Learn more: https://courses.mindful.money/financial-independence-bootcampDr. Jay Zigmont is a PhD, CFP and the Founder of Childfree Wealth. He is a fee-only, advice- only fiduciary and the author of The Portraits of Childfree Wealth . Most financial advice treats parenthood as the default. Dr. Jay has built a financial planning system that caters to the unique needs of those whose futures don’t include kids. Today, Jay joins the show to talk about why having children has become a default scenario in financial planning. He details the differences in financial planning between those who choose to have kids and those who choose to be childfree, and gives advice on how to build the life you want and then have the finances fit it.📺 Watch on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/dfi8fFdfKQwKey Takeaways00:58 – Jonathan introduces today’s guest, Jay Zigmont, who joins the show to talk about an early lesson that became integral to his money story and why he chose to focus on helping a unique demographic 10:01 – Jay shares the story of how he made his first million and lost it before he turned twenty-five 13:37 – Improving your money mindset 14:40 – From Adult Learning to Financial Coaching 16:21 – A systematic bias in the financial services industry 21:34 – Childless and Childfree demographics and statistics 26:31 – Key differences between planning for a life with kids and planning for a life without kids 32:08 – Long-term care 36:14 – One thing that a childfree person should do to lead to greater personal and financial success and one thing to avoid doing 37:38 – The last thing Jay changed his mind about and the thing in Jay’s life that he is most grateful for 39:31 – Jonathan thanks Jay for joining the show and lets listeners know where to connect with himTweetable Quotes“The hard part is that when you run your own company, you work for a crazy person, which is yourself.” (07:24) (Jay) “The childfree demographic is an underrepresented minority group that people aren’t talking about. And when they are talking about them, they’re judging them.” (08:19) (Jay) “Money doesn’t buy happiness. You don’t know that until you actually have money. I was living in Connecticut, commuting three hours both ways to New York City until I could afford an apartment. I had no money. I was busting my butt. But you learn that, ‘Ok, it’s easy to make money. How do you manage it? How do you grow it? How do you keep it?’ That’s a different question.” (10:55) (Jay) “There are systematic biases - technically the term is ‘pro-natalist’ which advocates for more kids - built into the system that the childfree folks then have to essentially unbuild. But I have to teach people financial advice that matches them.” (18:00) (Jay) “What’s happening is the younger generations are going, ‘Yeah, the concept of working twenty- five years and getting a watch and pension is gone. The classic two and a half kids and the white picket fence and the marriage could be gone too.’ And that’s just a rethinking of The American Dream. I don’t blame them for picking a different path. It’s just a different society now than it was for hundreds of years.” (25:36) (Jay) “I call it ‘Life & Financial Planning.’ I start with. ‘What life do you want to live?’ Then I go to what your finances are, and then your taxes.” (28:41) (Jay) “If you ask me, ‘Hey, who’s gonna take care of you when you get older?’ My answer is, ‘My bank account.’” (33:12) (Jay) “My answer is always, ‘Pick the life you want to live, then make your finances fit it.’ You don’t have to follow the default path.” (36:32) (Jay)Guest ResourcesChildfree Wealth Website Childfree Wealth Podcast Childfree Wealth YouTube Channel Childfree Wealth Facebook Childfree Wealth Instagram Childfree Wealth LinkedIn Jay’s LinkedIn Jay’s BookBooks Mentioned:Die with ZeroMindful Money ResourcesFor all the free stuff at Mindful Money: https://mindful.money/resourcesTo buy Jonathan’s first book - Mindful Money: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Money-Practices-Financial-Increasing/dp/1608684369To buy Jonathan’s second book – Mindful Investing: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Investing-Outcome-Greater-Well-Being/dp/1608688763Subscribe to Jonathan’s Weekly Newsletter: https://courses.mindful.money/email-opt-inCapture the most important benefit of an advisor – behavioral support – without the 1% fee: https://courses.mindful.money/membershipFor more complex, one on one financial planning and investing support with Jonathan or a member of Jonathan’s team: https://www.epwealth.com/our-team/berkeley/jonathan-deyoe/Website: https://mindful.moneyJonathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathandeyoe🎙️Podcast Production & Marketing by FullCastBack to Podcast Homepage

She coaches her clients to manage their money and mindset so they can get firmly on the path to financial freedom and comfortable retirement. Today, Linda joins the show to speak about female entrepreneurship, why the best laid financial plans don’t always pan out, and her thoughts on the conditioning of limited beliefs.📺 Watch on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/7f9_CRYo09EKey Takeaways00:51 – Jonathan introduces today’s guest, Linda Case, who joins the show to talk about financial trauma and curating a healthy financial mindset 12:03 – Linda reflects on the impact that the Great Recession of 2008-2009 had on her 16:43 – F3 Cubed 20:54 – From financial advisor to psychologist 27:11 – Staggering statistics on successful female entrepreneurship 31:27 – The conditioning of limited beliefs and how women, in particular, are conditioned 38:58 – Understanding the role that shame and forgiveness plays in finances 43:21 – Hypnosis & Energy 52:58 – One thing that women in particular can do to lead to greater personal and financial success and one thing to avoid doing 55:01 – Something people don’t know about Linda that she would like them to know and the one question Linda would want to know the answer to56:14 – Jonathan thanks Linda for joining the show and lets listeners know where to connect with herTweetable Quotes“I didn’t have that knowledge of limiting beliefs. All I had was the upbringing that I had. You come in with these core sets of beliefs and until they come to awareness, you’re looking at your life and saying, ‘Whoa, this is a problem. Do I want to address this or do I want to push it back down and wait until it springs up again?’” (11:18) (Linda) “It wasn’t until I really delved deeper into the spiritual aspects of money and getting my training on energy psychology that really, I think, developed into this program that I created.” (17:44) (Linda)“It’s a small percent [of female entrepreneurs] that breaks out of that microbusiness mold. And, I just have to attribute that to a lot of belief that we have been brought up with that we don’t speak up for ourselves, and don’t go after, and are busy taking care of other people.” (27:31) (Linda) “We all are conditioned, male and female, and it starts at a very early age. Seven is when we start to develop the conscious reasoning part - the logical part - of our brain. But before that, we’re pretty much walking around in a hypnotic state.” (31:44) (Linda) “I have clients coming in and it’s not specifically money related, but we end up having those discussions. And I think I have helped them feel safe having that conversation with me. But, unfortunately, so many people out there don’t have a safe place to go where they’re not going to be judged.” (39:45) (Linda) “Your imagination, when you want to create something, is all there. It’s all there. I think there have been really large, very important issues that don’t have the same levels of cross cutting across everything that crosses our lives the way that climate does, nor does it have the same level of urgency.” (18:01) (Sarah) “I think a lot about how I define success. I think that’s been a personal journey. I really have been fortunate and have worked really hard at defining that for myself. And it’s allowed me to have a very rich life and career. And it has meant not having the same levels of traditional success financially. That hasn’t bothered me.” (23:30) (Sarah) “I think reflecting on our stories about money is really profound and can change not just ourselves, but the world that we live in. And, if there was one story within the story of money that I think is a dominant story that I would love to see shifted it’s the ‘Zero Sum Story’ to one of abundance and sustainability. I think that’s entirely possible. That is what I believe is the hope of this moment as we face climate crisis is that there’s the ability to shift that whole mindset.” (31:14) (Sarah)Guest ResourcesSarah’s WebsiteSarah’s TwitterSarah’s LinkedInSarah’s PodcastMindful Money ResourcesFor all the free stuff at Mindful Money: https://mindful.money/resourcesTo buy Jonathan’s first book - Mindful Money: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Money-Practices-Financial-Increasing/dp/1608684369To buy Jonathan’s second book – Mindful Investing: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Investing-Outcome-Greater-Well-Being/dp/1608688763Subscribe to Jonathan’s Weekly Newsletter: https://courses.mindful.money/email-opt-inCapture the most important benefit of an advisor – behavioral support – without the 1% fee: https://courses.mindful.money/membershipFor more complex, one on one financial planning and investing support with Jonathan or a member of Jonathan’s team: https://www.epwealth.com/our-team/berkeley/jonathan-deyoe/Website: https://mindful.moneyJonathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathandeyoe🎙️Podcast Production & Marketing by FullCastBack to Podcast Homepage

I’ve always been mission-driven and I wanted to choose a path where I felt motivated in the same way. How can I help contribute to making the world a better place and I thought of financial services.” (06:49) (Julie) “The more actively you manage a strategy, the more you’re gonna have higher fees and higher transaction costs. So that has to be weighed when deviating from the traditional market cap approach.” (10:36) (Julie) “What we do is we hold every country accountable to their ‘Democracy Score’ as defined by The Economist magazine. It’s simple and transparent and systematic.” (13:14) (Julie) “Democracies enforce rule of law and property rights. There’s a more efficient and transparent use of capital. They have higher per capita GDP. They have better innovation. So, our hypothesis is that democracies will outperform authoritarians in the long run and that companies will try to do their business in countries that support the transparent use of capital.” (18:22) (Julie) “We [The United States] are a flawed democracy. We stayed the same in our ranking because we went up in political participation because more people voted. But we went down in the functioning of government.” (20:58) (Julie)Guest ResourcesJulie’s WebsiteLink to White PaperJulie’s LinkedInThe EconomistTicker Symbol: $DMCYMindful Money ResourcesFor all the free stuff at Mindful Money: https://mindful.money/resourcesTo buy Jonathan’s first book - Mindful Money: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Money-Practices-Financial-Increasing/dp/1608684369To buy Jonathan’s second book – Mindful Investing: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Investing-Outcome-Greater-Well-Being/dp/1608688763Subscribe to Jonathan’s Weekly Newsletter: https://courses.mindful.money/email-opt-inCapture the most important benefit of an advisor – behavioral support – without the 1% fee: https://courses.mindful.money/membershipFor more complex, one on one financial planning and investing support with Jonathan or a member of Jonathan’s team: https://www.epwealth.com/our-team/berkeley/jonathan-deyoe/Website: https://mindful.moneyJonathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathandeyoe🎙️Podcast Production & Marketing by FullCastBack to Podcast Homepage
