Mindful Money
Jonathan DeYoe
Do you struggle with money? You’re not alone. Money is a means, not an end. It’s a necessity of life for sure, but more money does not always guarantee a “good life”. Money enables many aspects of modern life, but as a dominant consideration it becomes destructive. The paradox is that more time and energy spent on personal finance does NOT create better outcomes. Unlike many other parts of life, we can’t create better outcomes by being smarter, spending more time, or putting in more effort. Join Mindful Money author and experienced 40-year investor Jonathan DeYoe as he shares stories from artists, authors, entrepreneurs, and other advisors about how they mindfully minimize their need to think about money and get more out of life. If you aren’t happy with your finances, feel like money takes more time that it should, or want to place your financial decisions into the broader context of your life, this show is for you. Each episode will draw the line between the “enough” activities that the academics tell us are additive to family outcomes, and those “little bit more” efforts that take time and sap energy, but do NOT improve outcomes.

In that path, I have always been and always will be very passionate about grassroots economic change. Not a top-down model where you parachute in a model from elsewhere or a bunch of money from elsewhere, but really harnessing the strength and skills from folks that are on the ground.” (08:28)“My role, and what I tell every client when we start working together, is really to support and strengthen their leadership so they feel better, stronger, and more capable. I help them to be more secure in their decisions, more grounded in their own identity, more sure about their own point of view and their own thought leadership.” (13:10)“The question and some of the concerns that come in are: what is my own capacity for earning? What does it mean to really increase my earnings? There’s never an issue about wanting to make an impact, but sometimes we have to explore a deliberate connection between how are you making your money, how are you marketing, how are you implementing your ethics and integrity and operating in a capitalist system, which we know has some big limitations, and yet doing work in a sustainable way.” (16:23)“For me, The Widest Net is really about creating an unbroken net that underlies an overall community or ecosystem. So, no matter what happens, no matter how far somebody falls, there are other people who are there to catch. We are building a really powerful and strong foundation.” (21:42)“If I can use my life force for the rest of my life to make people feel stronger, more confident, more capable, and with more choices around how they earn money, that’s how I really want to be spending my time.” (29:16)“I get as excited and filled with dopamine as anybody else when you look at possibility. When I blend it with a lens on inclusion, equity, just certain patterns that, if there’s not substantial change and awareness and analysis, then it is unlikely that there will be any kind of shift in power and wealth. That’s a part that, for me, I would love if it becomes pervasive, extensive wealth for all.” (44:51)Guest ResourcesPamela’s Website – https://pamelaslim.com/ke/Pamela’s LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/pamelaslimPamela’s Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/pamslim/?hl=enPamela’s Books: Body of Work – https://www.amazon.com/Body-Work-Finding-Thread-Together/dp/1591846196/ref=asc_df_1591846196/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312111907622&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15152070695528859851&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9004216&hvtargid=pla-453838270925&psc=1Escape From Cubicle Nation – https://www.amazon.com/Escape-Cubicle-Nation-Corporate-Entrepreneur/dp/0425232840/ref=sr_1_1?crid=9S8GZ30OKNH&keywords=escape+from+cubicle+nation&qid=1651164531&s=books&sprefix=escape+from+cubicle+nation%2Cstripbooks%2C93&sr=1-1The Widest Net – https://www.amazon.com/Widest-Net-Untapped-Discover-Customers/dp/1264266790Mindful Money ResourcesFor all the free stuff at Mindful Money: https://mindful.money/resourcesTo buy Jonathan’s first book - Mindful Money: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Money-Practices-Financial-Increasing/dp/1608684369To buy Jonathan’s second book – Mindful Investing: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Investing-Outcome-Greater-Well-Being/dp/1608688763Subscribe to Jonathan’s Weekly Newsletter: https://courses.mindful.money/email-opt-inCapture the most important benefit of an advisor – behavioral support – without the 1% fee: https://courses.mindful.money/membershipFor more complex, one on one financial planning and investing support with Jonathan or a member of Jonathan’s team: https://www.epwealth.com/our-team/berkeley/jonathan-deyoe/Website: https://mindful.moneyJonathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathandeyoe🎙️Podcast Production & Marketing by FullCastBack to Podcast HomepageThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

They wanted to be wealthy in other ways. And they did achieve that by living the life that they desired and living out their dream of building a log cabin on a mountain top.” (03:43)“I always followed my heart. And what that does is it provides me the guidance on what is my next best step and what am I meant to be doing and how can I show up in the world in the best possible way and do something that I love and have a positive impact on the world at the same time.” (07:35)“Embrace sales because it’s not a dirty word. In fact, the way you deliver your gifts is to make a sale.” (11:54)“If you can show up and be that person who serves, who educates, who helps guide your prospect along that decision making path, you’re providing a great service so that you can transform and not fit into that stereotype or persona of that sleazy salesman.” (18:23)“Men and women each have unique gifts to bring to the table. Women are particularly gifted with the ability to listen and to be attune to what other people are feeling. And when you’re in sales, being attune to your prospects' feelings, needs, and wants is incredibly important.” (26:04)“What do you do with the earnings that come in? Not just spending, saving and investing; it goes beyond that. Those earnings can enable you to do something more impactful and more meaningful.” (28:36)“Truly, beyond the mission of helping sales professionals to realize their personal and professional goals, my desire and mission is truly to help others shine their light. Each of us has a light to shine and sometimes we need permission in order to shine it fully. 003: Kathryn Peyton - Helping People Reach Their Financial Dreams with Purpose
Kathryn Peyton is a certified financial advisor at Abacus Wealth. At an early age, Kathryn was impacted by her parents’ financial habits of care and caution around money. But then, something changed for Kathryn as she began to realize that successful investing is attainable for everyday people. Thus began a lifelong fascination with all things money- and economics- related.Today, Jonathan and Kathryn talk about the work they both do as advisors in helping to set their clients up for financial success. Kathryn speaks to the joy she received when her clients see their financial future making sense and growing more secure. Kathryn discusses the importance of choosing a financial advisor based on the personality fit and the ability to truly be heard. She talks about two of the most basic, yet important, rules for a successful financial life and some of the financial resources she likes to consume.Kathryn believes that the system for saving money and building wealth in this country is corrupt, overly complex and impossible to navigate for many folks. My job is to be a translator and a door opener, and to help people reach their dreams in a conscious, purposeful way.📺 Watch on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/BVDAgstZ7SoKey Takeaways00:01 – Jonathan introduces today’s guest, Kathryn Peyton, who joins the show to share some of theearly lessons she learned about money growing up04:51 – Shifting financial dynamics between men and women07:29 – Kathryn’s journey to becoming a financial advisor14:21 – Kathryn speaks to her role and how she manages her clients expectations17:03 – The incredible value that advisors can provide20:04 – Three critical questions to ask potential advisors21:46 – Differentiating between what does and doesn’t work25:48 – Resources that Kathryn reads on a regular basis31:07 – Something Kathryn changed her mind about recently32:01 – One thing that Kathryn wishes people knew about her33:58 – Jonathan thanks Kathryn for joining the show and lets listeners know where to connect with herTweetable Quotes“I would say that the most profound money lesson that I got was that money, or lack thereof, can change everything for a family in an instant.” (02:17)“The reason I really got interested in investing was because my husband has always been the primary breadwinner and I always managed the financial side of life.” (08:49)“Abacus has a very specific investment philosophy and outlook. And it works for a lot of people really well, but it doesn’t work for everybody.” (15:30)“The most important question really is not a question at all; it’s a personality fit. You want to make sure that you feel comfortable talking to that person, that they listen to you, and that they hear what you’re saying and they don’t steer you in a specific direction.” (20:18)“Those are probably the two most important things of a nitty gritty financial life. It’s living below your means and automating everything.” (23:22)“I’m in this job for a purpose. There’s a reason that I’m here. It’s not just because I’m interested in a topic. It’s because I feel like it’s really hard to do this well. There are so many ways to get lost and to get tracked in the wrong direction. And it’s so hard to figure out what the right thing to do is. And I have seen that impact with my parents, with friends and with clients. I really do have a personal mission about doing this job.” (32:17)Guest ResourcesKathryn’s LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathrynpeyton/Kathryn’s Email – Kathryn@abacuswealth.comLink to Kiplinger Magazine – https://subscription.kiplinger.com/Link to AARP Magazine – https://www.aarp.org/?_ga=2.267441230.1351018858.1649989667-1600706723.1649989667Link to Barry Ritholtz’s Blog – https://ritholtz.com/Mindful Money ResourcesFor all the free stuff at Mindful Money: https://mindful.money/resourcesTo buy Jonathan’s first book - Mindful Money: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Money-Practices-Financial-Increasing/dp/1608684369To buy Jonathan’s second book – Mindful Investing: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Investing-Outcome-Greater-Well-Being/dp/1608688763Subscribe to Jonathan’s Weekly Newsletter: https://courses.mindful.money/email-opt-inCapture the most important benefit of an advisor – behavioral support – without the 1% fee: https://courses.mindful.money/membershipFor more complex, one on one financial planning and investing support with Jonathan or a member of Jonathan’s team: https://www.epwealth.com/our-team/berkeley/jonathan-deyoe/Website: https://mindful.moneyJonathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathandeyoe🎙️Podcast Production & Marketing by FullCastBack to Podcast HomepageThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

What I have seen is you actually need to be in the presence of a mentor and a group of people who are shifting that at the same time. You have to be an example of it on a regular basis.” (08:28)“I am in a ‘Take Out More’ space because I am enough, because I see the value that I’m creating in the world. And that starts to create feedback loops because the business, or the money, starts to come in but it’s fueled by this sense of self that is not prideful but fully enveloping the life and the care and the compassion and the love that we bring into what we’re doing. It’s a much fuller experience than most people give themselves permission to live.” (14:19)“It’s helpful to show people their patterns, such as, ‘This is what it feels like to be stuck in scarcity and let me show you what it looks like on the other side because I want you to be able to do this for yourself in the future.’ And I’ll start to show them the possibilities that they’re not even aware.” (26:12)“The idea that you could have all of your necessity expenses at less than fifty percent of the income coming into your home is a game changer.” (33:13)Guest ResourcesLeisa’s Websites – https://www.wealthclinic.com/ https://www.mindfulmillionairebook.com/ Leisa’s Podcast – https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mindful-millionaire-with-leisa-peterson/id1507801376 Leisa’s Book: The Mindful Millionaire – https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Millionaire-Overcome-Experience-Prosperity/dp/1250261910/ref=asc_df_1250261910/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=509245866633&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15624224005950802587&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9004216&hvtargid=pla-923685320075&psc=1Mindful Money ResourcesFor all the free stuff at Mindful Money: https://mindful.money/resourcesTo buy Jonathan’s first book - Mindful Money: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Money-Practices-Financial-Increasing/dp/1608684369To buy Jonathan’s second book – Mindful Investing: https://www.amazon.com/Mindful-Investing-Outcome-Greater-Well-Being/dp/1608688763Subscribe to Jonathan’s Weekly Newsletter: https://courses.mindful.money/email-opt-inCapture the most important benefit of an advisor – behavioral support – without the 1% fee: https://courses.mindful.money/membershipFor more complex, one on one financial planning and investing support with Jonathan or a member of Jonathan’s team: https://www.epwealth.com/our-team/berkeley/jonathan-deyoe/Website: https://mindful.moneyJonathan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathandeyoe🎙️Podcast Production & Marketing by FullCastBack to Podcast HomepageThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
