Why "I'm Sorry" Sucks

This week, Penn and I talk about how to really understand one another when in an argument. When you're in a fight, using the phrase “I’m Sorry” flippantly is really more about making yourself feel better than your partner. We used to use "I'm Sorry" as a "please-don't-be-mad-at-me-let's-just-let-this-go" Band-Aid, and it did us a lot more harm than good. Not taking the time to understand your partner can fester into having an insecure sense of attachment, among other things. Luckily, we have some magic words to help in this episode. Thank you for listening! Your support means the world to us. Do you have ideas for podcast guests? Send us a note! Would you consider leaving a review? : Penn, Kim, Lola, and Penn Charles Holderness create original music, parodies, and Vlogs for YouTube and Facebook to poke fun of themselves and celebrate the absurdity in circumstances most families face in their day to day life. They published "Christmas Jammies" in December 2013 and life hasn't been the same. Since then, their popular parodies, "All About That Baste", "Baby Got Class," and original music "Snow Day" have received national news coverage. Penn, the Dad, took a chance and left his job as a news anchor to join his wife Kim, the Mom, at their video production and digital marketing company, Greenroom Communications, LLC. Lola and Penn Charles are always happy, respectful and eat all of their vegetables (that last sentence is a lie).  The Holderness Family Podcast is Edited and Engineered by Max Trujillo of Trujillo Media. Parenting Gets Easier, Right? with Taylor and Heidi Calmus

Would you rather potty train a toddler or teach a teen to drive? This week we have Dude Dad's Taylor and Heidi Calmus on the podcast to talk all about our different seasons of parenting. We discuss how we first met each other, what it was like to create content in a pandemic, as well as their new TV show Super Dad on Magnolia Network. (Yes, Magnolia like Chip and Joanna Gaines...) Penn also tells more than one poop story... we apologize in advance. You can find more hilarious videos from Taylor and Heidi here: https://www.dudedad.com/ as well as watch their new show here: https://magnolia.com/watch/show/c3dc8b62-f029-5237-904d-283cf1529f6a/super-dad/.  Thank you for listening! Decisions That Made Us

Right now, there's a trend on TikTok where people are sharing one small decision that changed the entire course of their lives. It got us thinking: What was that for us? Instead one small decision, we feel like we've made several big decisions that shaped who we are today. Join us for a storytime journey along all our forks in the road, including why Penn is solely responsible for Blockbuster going out of business. #donttrustthefart  Thank you for listening! How to Navigate the Awkward Years with Michelle Icard

Let’s be real, middle school was (all-caps) AWKWARD. Between the braces (and for me, a bad perm) and hormones, it’s a wonder we survived. Michelle Icard has made it her life’s work to help kids through these awkward years. Bless.  Her new book, Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen guides readers through the fourteen essential conversations parents need to have with their kids before they start high school. Also - her first book, Middle School Makeover: Improving the Way You and Your Child Experience the Middle School Years, is a primer for the social and emotional changes parents and kids navigate as they get older.  You can also take her interaction course here: https://michelleicard.com/online-parenting-course/    Thank you for listening! 9 Questions For Your Partner

In the past year we've spent more time together than ever before, so why does it feel like we haven’t had as many good conversations? You know I love a list, so I wrote these questions for an after-dinner discussion launching point. Penn and I decided to bring the discussion to our podcast and we learned a little about each other (which is a big deal because we’ve known each other for almost 18 years.) Here is a link to the 9 questions we asked each other: https://theholdernessfamily.com/9-questions-to-ask-your-partner-in-2021/ I encourage you to give it a try as well!   We wrote a book! A major theme of this years’ Olympics has been mental health and the pressure athletes face. Where Comedy Comes From with Charlie Berens

Everyone has one of those friends who has you in stitches every time they open their mouth. For us, that guy is comedian and author, Charlie Berens. (He is also a journalist turned online content creator, kind of like us!) We ask Charlie where he gets that comedic gift. Turns out, it’s not about sitting around dreaming up jokes; it’s more about paying attention to the world around you. As one of 12 kids, he got plenty of comedic material... bless his parents. His new book, The Midwest Survival Guide, is available for pre-order now and you can get dates for his upcoming comedy tour here.    Thank you for listening! Your support means the world to us.
