EP250: Understanding Gen Z with John Schlimm

Isn't it interesting how we give generations labels? As you may know, Gen Z is defined as anyone born between 1997 and 2012, which means these are the people that are roughly 11 to 26 years of age now. As you give some thought to people you may know in this age group, I wonder what labels or judgments might you have? In his new book, What Would Gen-Z Do?: Everything You Don't Know About Gen-Z But Should, international award-winning author John Schlimm invites you to rethink everything.   Guest Bio A Harvard-trained educator, artist, advocate, and international award-winning author, John Schlimm was among the first to start piecing together the authentic and multifaceted face of Generation Z—beyond the stigmas, stereotypes, and often misguided media profiling of these dynamic young people, who remain largely misunderstood and vastly underestimated. During the past several years, John’s extensive and revealing work and trusted relationship with Gen-Zers across the country has resulted in several thought-provoking essays—for Huffington Post, Harvard Ed. Magazine, and others—and his groundbreaking collaboration with The Andy Warhol Museum to create The Gen-Z Time Capsule, which is a participatory project helping Gen-Zers to further introduce themselves to the world—including to their own parents, teachers, community leaders, employers, and others—while also turning them into a bona fide work of Pop Art. EP243: Unlocking Potential with George Mumford

I’m joined this week by George Mumford to talk about his book, Unlocked: Embrace Your Greatness, Find the Flow, Discover Success. George has worked with the elite of elite athletes, including Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O’Neal. What he has discovered is that natural ability wasn’t exclusively what made them great. “What made them so exceptional was that they were what I call unlocked— they were in close touch with that part of themselves that was most truly who they were. That is what allowed them to develop their potential in the way they did.” Today’s conversation is going to do a deep dive into how we can each become unlocked.   Guest Bio George Mumford is a globally recognized speaker, teacher, and coach. Since 1989, he’s been honing his groundbreaking performance and mindfulness techniques with people from locker rooms to board rooms, Yale to jail. Michael Jordan credits George with transforming his on-court leadership, while Mumford has also worked with Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, and countless other NBA players, Olympians, executives, and artists. Mumford’s first book The Mindful Athlete: Secrets to Pure Performance is a memoir and instruction guide to accessing your inner masterpiece. His new book “Unlocked: Embrace Your Greatness, Find the Flow, Discover Success” will be published in May 2023. While at the University of Massachusetts — where he roomed with future Hall-of-Famer Julius Erving — injuries forced Mumford out of basketball and into addiction to pain medication and drugs. With the help of meditation and mindfulness, he got clean and made it his mission to teach and work with others.
