Weathering Challenges in your Treasury Career with Christopher Corner
In this week’s show, I am joined by Christopher Corner, the former Deputy Group Treasurer at Thomas Cook.Thomas Cook Group plc was a British global travel group, formed in June 2007 by the merger of Thomas Cook AG (itself the successor to Thomas Cook & Son) and MyTravel Group. The group operated in two separate segments: a tour operator and an airline. It also operated travel agencies in Europe. Thomas Cook was listed on both the London Stock Exchange and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (The Thomas Cook Group).On 23rd September 2019, the Thomas Cook Group and all UK entities went into compulsory liquidation and ceased trading. Approximately 21,000 worldwide employees were left without jobs (including 9,000 UK staff) and 600,000 customers (150,000 from the UK) were left abroad, triggering the UK's largest peacetime repatriation.After the collapse, segments of the company were purchased by others, including the travel stores in the UK, Thomas Cook Scandinavia, and the Thomas Cook brand.Christopher started his career as a graduate trainee at Lloyds in corporate finance before moving into a treasury role at Johnson Matthey plc, taking an assistant treasurer role at GE Insurance Solutions before being offered the Group Treasurer role at The Capita Group. Forging Ahead in Treasury with Todd Yoder
This week’s guest on the Treasury Career Corner Podcast Todd Yoder, Director of Global Corporate Treasury at Fluor Corporation, has worked across some of the largest engineering, procurement and construction projects in the world. Founded in 1912 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, the Fluor Corporation is one of the world’s largest engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction and maintenance companies. It has been responsible for some of the world’s most complex projects, from bridges to diamond mines to oil refineries and pipelines, Fluor operates across six continents and has been listed in Fortune Magazine’s “World’s Most Admired Companies" for 19 consecutive years. It has revenues of $19.2 billion in 2018 and over 53,000 employees working across 100 countries. Prior to Fluor, Todd worked at Capital Bancorp in commercial credit before moving to Catalyst Marketing Design Inc. He then joined Zimmer Holdings Inc where he was involved in a wide range of global treasury responsibilities. He was eventually promoted to oversee the financial planning and analysis for Zimmer’s Reconstructive Global Hips and Trauma divisions. He also worked for Anthem, one of the largest health benefits companies before moving to Fluor.Todd has been given multiple awards for his work at Fluor for his corporate treasury strategy. In 2019 he was given Fluor’s prestigious Tappan Award for being a key team member on the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Todd is also known for being a treasury technology expert and is at the forefront of utilizing AI, data visualisation and robotic process automation within multi-national corporate treasury to add value to the business. He has an insatiable thirst for knowledge and holds three business degrees. He has also been a guest speaker at numerous engagements including The Economist magazine’s EuroFinance events; and has been published in Treasury Today magazine, The Global Treasurer and Bloomberg. The Importance of People Skills in Treasury with Senne Van Nieuwenborgh
On this episode of the Treasury Career Corner Podcast, I speak to Senne Van Nieuwenborgh, Senior Vice President, Treasury at SES Satellites. He made the move from management consulting into treasury and quickly progressed up the treasury career, taking roles in diverse industries, from mining to metals to space! SES are based in Betzdorf, Luxembourg and are a world-leading satellite operator. They also have more than 50 satellites in Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) and 20 in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO). They focus on value-added, end-to-end solutions in two key business units: SES Video and SES Networks. The company also provides satellite communication services to broadcasters, content and internet service providers, mobile and fixed network operators, governments and institutions. Founded in 1985 as Société Européenne des Satellites, the company was renamed SES Global in 2001 and has been simply “SES” since 2006. Senne started off studying law before starting work as a management consultant at Anderson Consulting (now Accenture). An opportunity came up to join Dow Chemical. He instantly clicked with the people and the company and spent the next 7 years moving around the company acquiring the technical skill-set that got him headhunted for Nyrstar. Senne has some great lessons for those starting out or for those looking to progress up the treasury career ladder. Seeing the Bigger Picture in Treasury with Ramon Tolk
Join me on this episode of The Treasury Career Corner Podcast, where I speak to Ramon Tolk, the Senior Director of Treasury at Avery Dennison. Ramon is responsible for treasury and FX management and loans for Avery Dennison and is based in The Netherlands. His career has taken him from the world of auditing, to consultancy to treasury. He is also a frequent speaker at conferences and has written several articles on treasury topics and is sought after as a guest lecturer for bachelor and master’s courses on treasury. While you may have used Avery labels, what you may not know is that the Avery Dennison Corporation is actually a global Fortune 500 company in materials science which specialises not just in labelling, but in the design and manufacture a range of functional materials. For over eight decades, they have been manufacturing products that are used in almost every major industry. Today they make a range of physical and digital products; ranging from radio-frequency identification (RFID), pressure-sensitive materials for labels and graphic applications; tapes and other bonding solutions for industrial, medical and retail applications and tags and embellishments for apparel. Headquartered in Glendale, California, the company employs approximately 30,000 employees in more than 50 countries. Their reported sales in 2018 were $7.2 billion. Today they strive to find innovative, intelligent and sustainable solutions for customers across the globe. Prior to working for Avery Dennison, Ramon started as in auditing at Deloitte before progressing to the position of Senior Manager, heading up the Regulatory and Accounting team within Treasury & Capital Markets for a range of international companies. He then consulted at Numico and managed their transition to Danone. In 2012, Ramon moved to VimpelCom where he set up the treasury management systems, controls, and compliance processes as well as dealing with corporate finance strategy.
