211. WHY GRAPHIC NOVELS DESERVE MORE LOVE (CAMP BNT '24)

Last week we talked about our first book choice of Camp BNT, Liz Kleinrock’s Start Here, Start Now. We’re going in a different direction today as we dive into graphic texts. Specifically, we’re looking at Stamped from the Beginning: A Graphic History of Racist Ideas in America, by Ibram X. Kendi, adapted and illustrated by Joel Christian Gill.Graphic novels are something that we haven’t fit into our curriculum as much as we’d like and we hope to change that moving forward. This type of text has the ability to convey complex historical ideas and emotions and facilitate deeper learning and empathy. Plus, the accessibility of visuals within graphic texts is so helpful for students who are visually inclined, and also helps others stretch boundaries of understanding visual text. It’s a win-win for everyone! We hope today’s book recommendation is helpful! Be sure to join Camp BNT (free!), download the summer bucket list, and join us on social media as you’re checking things off your list.Resources: Join Camp BNT!Stamped from the Beginning: A Graphic History of Racist Ideas in America, by Ibram X. Have you signed up for Camp BNT yet? Last week we talked through what camp will look like this summer and we hope you’ll join us! We’re diving into the first book on our list, Start Here, Start Now: A Guide to Antibias and Antiracist Work in Your School Community, by Liz Kleinrock. In this conversation, we’re highlighting two specific parts of the book that can be incorporated into your teaching practice and your planning process for the upcoming school year. Start Here, Start Now will help you take the steps toward cultivating an antiracist and antibias classroom, and prepare you for the tough discussions that this work entails. If you haven’t already purchased this book, we highly recommend doing so (or even asking your school to get it for you!). 208. LIVING WITH ADHD: AMANDA'S JOURNEY TO DIAGNOSIS

Just like our students are unique and have brains that work in different ways, the same is true for us as teachers. The more information that we have about our students, and ourselves, the better we can support them and appreciate their individuality. Today it’s just me, Amanda, and I’m taking a risk as I get incredibly vulnerable behind the mic. I’ve had suspicions that I may have ADHD and decided to start my journey towards a diagnosis so that I can figure out how my brain works and make improvements in my physical and mental health.Statistically, there are so many high-achieving women who were never diagnosed with ADHD when they were younger and I know many of you are faced with the same challenges I am. So, I’ve decided to document my experience of being tested for ADHD.Inside this episode, you’ll hear live snippets of each step of the process from the tests I went through to the recording of a call with my doctor where she shares my results and next-step recommendations. While this was extremely scary to share with you, I’m proud of myself for doing it. I hope it encourages you to take similar steps if you are struggling in any way with your mental health, whether that involves ADHD or something else. Here’s to loving ourselves exactly as we are!Show Notes: https://www.bravenewteaching.com/home/episode208"Send us a message - please include your contact information so we can chat soon!"Get your FREE Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs gateway lesson: shop.bravenewteaching.com/cloudyCheck out Curriculum Rehab here!Support the show📚 BNT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & RESOURCES 👩‍💻 Join Happy Hour! 205. HOW TO ASSESS READING THROUGH WRITING

Have you gotten to the end of the year not knowing what kids have truly learned? You know you’re teaching. You know what some students know and really understand. But when it comes down to it, you feel like you don’t really know what everybody learned. We completely understand! That’s what it felt like for us before we started backward planning and planning our year and assessments the way we teach in Down with the Reading Quiz and Curriculum Rehab. We know assessments are key in guiding our instruction and gauging student understanding. You’ve heard us talk quite a bit about Sesame Street Quizzes and how much we love them but there are other assessments we absolutely love for assessing student understanding, too. One of our favorites is the paragraph chunk quiz!Today, we are diving into paragraph chunk quizzes and ways to implement them in your ELA classes. We’re sharing what paragraph chunk quizzes are, why we love them, and different ways to format them to fit what you and your students need.RESOURCES MENTIONED:Choice Reading Unit Masterclass: Foster Authentic ReadersSHOW NOTES: https://www.bravenewteaching.com/home/episode205"Send us a message - please include your contact information so we can chat soon!"Get your FREE Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs gateway lesson: shop.bravenewteaching.com/cloudyCheck out Curriculum Rehab here!Support the show📚 BNT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & RESOURCES 👩‍💻 Join Happy Hour! 204. STOP MAKING THESE ASSESSMENT MISTAKES

Are you tired of constant reading quizzes that you give just because you feel like that’s what you’re supposed to do? If so, you likely realize that you aren’t getting the data and information you need to know about your students’ understanding from them. We’ve been there and we get it!Assessment is legitimately the most important part when you're looking at data and metrics of education. But in order to get actual, usable data that informs your instruction, you need aligned formative assessments that assess students along the way, making sure that their skills are being built and allowing you to adjust and readjust along the way.In this episode, we are diving into the importance of assessments, why we need to reconsider assessments such as reading quizzes, mistakes we’ve made with assessments in our classrooms, and how you can make assessments more meaningful and impactful in your own classroom.RESOURCES MENTIONED:Check out Amanda's CAFE MODE TimersSHOW NOTES: https://www.bravenewteaching.com/home/episode204"Send us a message - please include your contact information so we can chat soon!"Get your FREE Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs gateway lesson: shop.bravenewteaching.com/cloudyCheck out Curriculum Rehab here!Support the show📚 BNT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & RESOURCES 👩‍💻 Join Happy Hour!
