GMU econ prof Dan Klein says a populist strain is natural to classical liberalism. He draws on ethics and libertarian class analysis. He highlights Javier Milei. He discusses two types of popuphobes, swampy globalists and certain misguided classical liberals. He explains how “populism” is gas in the swampy globalists’ gaslighting—and suggests that the misguided classical liberals are playing into their hands. He relates populism to Max Weber’s three sources of legitimacy for a political leader, finding a correlation between populism and charisma. Classical liberals should be wary of populism but accord it at least one cheer, especially in these times of swampy globalism.

I had the pleasure to speak with Prof. John Mearsheimer and Alexander Mercouris about what Trump can achieve as he returns to the White House. Trump will seek to shift focus away from an increasingly irrelevant Europe and America’s perpetual wars in the Middle East, as the main challenge to US dominance comes from China. However, Biden has escalated the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East to such an extent that there are options left for Trump.

A peace agreement will be almost impossible to achieve. Russia considers itself to be fighting an existential threat from NATO and demands that Ukraine restore its neutrality and accept territorial concessions. Even if Trump accepts these conditions, it would be difficult to sell such a peace agreement to Washington, the Europeans and the Ukrainians. As NATO expansionism triggered the war, it is unlikely that even NATO security guarantees to Ukraine would be acceptable in any peace agreement. A peace agreement has more chance to succeed if it is based on the recognition that the Ukraine War is not only a conflict between Ukraine and Russia but primarily a conflict between NATO and Russia. A peace agreement attempting to resolve the destructive zero-sum European security architecture could produce a positive-sum approach to security that benefits Ukraine, Russia and the NATO countries.

Besides being a former ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Freeman’s career included opening China with Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon in the 1970s and developing the post-Cold War security architecture in Europe. We discussed the messy world that the Biden Administration is handing over to Trump. There is seemingly a genuine desire to end the proxy war in Ukraine, and Trump may also achieve a ceasefire in Palestine. However, NATO’s escalations in Ukraine to sabotage possible negotiations and the reckless support for HTS in Syria have reduced the possibilities available to Trump. Will the Ukraine War be resolved by a Russian victory or a political settlement?
