Revelation: Laodicea

Send us a textToday, as we conclude our series on the letters in the book of Revelation to the seven churches in Asia Minor, I invite you to reflect on some important questions.Question 1: Do you have a distorted perception of yourself? I believe that many of us would answer affirmatively. This issue is addressed by Jesus Himself in Matthew 23:27-28, where He pronounces a woe upon the teachers of the law and the Pharisees, calling them hypocrites. He compares them to whitewashed tombs that may look beautiful on the outside, but are filled with the bones of the dead and everything unclean on the inside. Jesus explains that although these individuals may appear righteous to others, they are actually consumed by hypocrisy and wickedness within. It is a common tendency for us to carefully shape a particular image of ourselves to present to the world, while concealing our true inner struggles. Even when we engage in introspection and sincerely attempt to address our sins, we often still fall prey to this distorted perception. So, let us pause for a moment and consider: Where within myself do I harbor this distorted perception?Sermon NotesSupport the showThe Village Church’s sermon podcast is more than just a weekly message. Revelation: Sardis

Send us a textSardisToday, as we take a look at the Book of Revelation and explore its intriguing epistles, we find ourselves at the threshold of the letter to Sardis. However, before embarking on this captivating journey, let us momentarily divert our attention to a topic of great relevance today - motherhood. Today marks the celebration of Mother's Day!Reflecting upon my own experiences, I can affirm that parenthood is a transformative voyage, brimming with profound joy and, at times, paradoxical sensations. Today, I would like to shed light on an aspect of motherhood that is often overlooked but holds equal importance. Our wise friend, Rod, once cautioned me before the arrival of our first child, sharing these words of wisdom: "Mark, the path of a mother is extraordinary, beyond your complete understanding. Thus, as a father, it becomes your responsibility to contribute in ways that alleviate her burdens. Changing diapers may appear trivial, yet it symbolizes shared accountability."And so, standing here today, six years later, having changed diapers every single day, I find it to be a humbling experience that has tested my resilience on occasion. The myriad bodily fluids I have encountered often triggered discomfort within me. Nevertheless, I have come to perceive them as symbols of life and growth. Yes, they may be unpleasant, yet they possess an oddly captivating beauty that mirrors the enigmatic essence of parenthood. Revelation: Thyatira

Send us a textIn this thought-provoking sermon, we explore the message to the church in Thyatira from Revelation 2:18-29. The message to Thyatira is a timely reminder for Christians to be vigilant against the alluring, deceptive nature of sin and how Jesus can help us overcome it.We begin by providing historical context, painting a vivid picture of the early church in Thyratira – a thriving trade center known for its dyeing, weaving, and metalworking industries. This bustling city also had a plethora of pagan cults and religious practices, which greatly influenced the believers' lives. Our focus then shifts to the spiritual symbolism of Babylon, representing the worldly systems and values that seduce believers away from their faith. We unpack how the church in Thyatira tolerated the teachings of Jezebel, who lured followers into sexual immorality and idolatry. This tolerance is a warning to us, as Christians today, to be wary of permitting similar influences in our lives.Support the showThe Village Church’s sermon podcast is more than just a weekly message. Revelation: Smyrna

Despite facing poverty, slander, and even imprisonment, the believers in Smyrna remained steadfast in their trust in Christ. Easter 2023: Revelation One

Send us a textIn a moment of time, John was granted a picture: the book of Revelation. And just like how we see different things at different moments in time, we also have various pictures of Jesus in our minds. But during Holy week, we witness Jesus in a different light, engaging in debates, healing people, and ultimately dying on the cross. Then, in Revelation 1, we see Jesus revealed to John on Patmos in all his glory, shining like the sun, with hair like white wool and eyes like flames of fire.As we reflect on these images, we need to remember that Jesus has a message for us. He is speaking to the seven churches in a specific time and place, and we must be willing to listen. Let us hold onto this image of King Jesus, shining like the sun, and be open to hearing his words to us.Jesus' message is not just for the churches of the past, but for us today as well. Are we willing to hear what he has to say? Are we open to seeing Jesus in a new light and letting his words challenge us?In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty of our world, we need to be reminded that Jesus is still on the throne, shining in all his glory. He holds the seven stars in his hand and his voice thunders like the roar of many waters. He is powerful and majestic, and yet he speaks to us with tenderness and compassion. So as we read the book of Revelation, let us not be afraid of the visions and the symbolism, but let us focus on the message of hope and redemption that Jesus has for us. Let us be willing to hear his words and let them transform us from the inside out. And let us hold onto the image of King Jesus, shining like the sun, as a reminder of his power and his love for us.Sermon NotesSupport the showThe Village Church’s sermon podcast is more than just a weekly message.
