Today on the podcast is a man who has been on fire recently, Sean McGorty!
Sean is an OG guest of The Running Effect, so it is always a joy to bring him back on and soak up his wisdom. Recently, Sean placed third in both the 5k & 10k at this year's US Championships. He will rep the red, white, and blue on the big stage next month in Budapest for the 2023 World Championships. In his most recent race, he ran a PR of 13:02.13 in the 5k to gain the World and Olympic standard. Sean runs for Nike and The Bowerman Track Club.
For those who aren't familiar with Sean, he has a long history of success from the time he was in high school. In high school, he won more state-championships and had more accolades than one could remember. In college, Sean became an NCAA Champion in the 5k at Stanford University and pushed forward that program to a new level in his years of representing the farm.
In today's conversation, Sean pulls back the curtain on his past ten months of ups and downs. He shares exclusive stories, insights, and wisdom from his journey and all of the different things that have gone on since our last conversation. He discusses his injury from this past winter and how he managed to come back and make the World Championships by placing 3rd in both the 5k and 10k. He goes through this in a deep way that I found fascinating and drew a lot of inspiration from. Today's conversation is one of the best and most inspiring in the history of the podcast. Period.

Duke's Coach Angela Reckart On Building Successful Programs & Coaching Successful Athletes
Today on the podcast is Coach Angela Reckart!
Coach Angela Reckart, the head coach of men's and women's cross country and assistant coach of track & field (distance) at Duke University, has quickly made an impact on the program. In her first season, Reckart led the Blue Devils to remarkable success as both the men's and women's distance units shattered program records, achieved 19 top-five program marks, and saw three individuals qualify for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The team's achievements were highlighted by standout performances from athletes like Emily Cole, CJ Ambrosio, Nick Dahl, and Michaela Reinhart. Under Reckart's guidance, the program has witnessed significant growth and promising results, cementing her reputation as an accomplished and influential coach. Her previous coaching experience at Penn State and North Carolina also demonstrated her ability to develop All-Americans and foster record-breaking performances.
Today's conversation was super fascinating. I've been loving these discussions with NCAA coaches, and Coach Reck brought the heat to today's conversation! It was so much fun unpacking a plethora of subjects surrounding team and personal excellence with someone who thinks about this subjects on a daily basis. Inside The Mind Of The US Steeplechase Champion Krissy Gear + An Exclusive Look At Her Incredible Season
Today on the podcast is your 2023 USATF Steeplechase Champion, Krusty Gear!
Krissy runs for HOKA NAZ Elite. Originally from Fort Myers, Florida, she was a six-time state champion in track. She began her college career at Furman University. Later, she transferred to the University of Arkansas, where she won an SEC title in the DMR and was a part of the NCAA championship team in the distance medley relay. Krissy's professional career took off when she joined HOKA NAZ Elite in 2022, contributing to the team's third-place finish at the USATF Club Cross Country Championships. In the 2023 indoor track season, she achieved multiple wins and personal bests in various events, including the 800 meters and mile. The season culminated with a third-place finish in the 1500 meters at the USATF Indoor Championships. Her outdoor season has been one for the record books with victories in the steeplechase at the ON Track Fest and the BAA Invitational Mile. Most notable of all, Krissy won the steeplechase at the 2023 USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships, securing her first national title and a spot in the World Championships. With her dedication, talent, remarkable achievements, and kind heart, Krissy has become an inspiring figure in the world of track and field.
In today's conversation, Krissy and I dive into a plethora of topics including phone service in Europe, belief, having fun with the sport, working on detachment from outcome, the whole journey of winning a US title, and much more. Being able to see what Krissy has done is nothing short of impactful, and this conversation was such an awesome opportunity to learn from her.

Sinclaire Johnson Goes Deep On The Peaks & Valleys Of The Sport
I am absolutely thrilled to welcome onto the podcast the one and only Sinclaire Johnson!
Sinclaire was the 2022 US Champion in the 1500m and placed 4th at this year championships sending her to the World Championships next month in Budapest. She holds PRs of 1:59.90 in the 800m and 3:58.85 in the 1500. She runs for Nike's Union Athletics Club. In college, Sinclaire was an NCAA Champion in the 1500m. In high school, Sinclaire was a multi-time state champion in Flordia.
Over the past few months, Sinclaire has dealt with a plethora of setbacks that she shares in-depth about in this episode. I greatly appreciated her openness to talking about the darker side of the sport that all of us have experienced. Through hearing her story and journey in this sport, I'm so confident you'll walk away a better version of yourself and all the more motivated to tackle your dreams. We also discuss why running beef is good for the sport and what she'd cook for Gordon Ramsay for dinner.

Believe In Yourself: A Conversation With NCAA 1500m Champion Maia Ramsden | An Inside Look At Her Incredible Story
Today on the podcast is your 2023 NCAA Women's Champion, Maia Ramsden!
Maia runs for Harvard University where she has contributed to the storied program over the past few years. She grew up in New-Zealand where she was a multi-time national champion. On June 10, Maia won the 1500m at NCAAs in stunning fashion running a PB of 4:08.60 with a final 400m of 63.27. For many, this was a surprise, but for those who know Maia it was the culmination of years of hard work.
In addition to her success this past spring, Maia has had a storied career on the grass as well placing 11th at the National Meet last Fall and winning the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship Meet.
Today's conversation of the podcast is a very fun one! Maia and I have a fun free-flowing conversation about all things her career and the different elements that have gone into it. This conversation was both light-hearted and inspiring which are always the conversations I walk away feeling the best about. Tennessee's Coach Sean Carlson On What It Takes To Be Great + Lessons From Coaching Yared Nuguse, Dylan Jacobs, & Yaseen Abdalla
Today is one of the most accomplished coaches in NCAA history, Coach Sean Carlson.
Coach Sean Carlson leads the men's and women's cross country and distance programs at the University of Tennessee. Carlson brings with him a decade of experience at Notre Dame, where he transformed their distance group into a national powerhouse. Under his guidance, Notre Dame athletes achieved impressive records, including four American collegiate records, 13 school records, 29 NCAA All-America performances, two NCAA records, and three NCAA championships. Carlson's success extended to both the men's and women's teams, with the Irish men winning three ACC Cross Country Championship titles and achieving top-10 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. His coaching expertise has also helped athletes qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships and claim titles, including the NCAA outdoor title in the 10,000 meters.
In his career he has coached athletes such as Yared Nuguse, Dylan Jacobs, Yaseen Abdalla among others.
In today's conversation, Coach Carlson shares his in-depth thoughts on culture, buy-in, belief, what it takes to be great, coaching Yared, Dylan, and Yaseen, and many other subjects. This episode was absolutely fantastic and I learned a lot from it. Coach Carlson is full of wisdom and you will walk away with practical lessons and tools to take your running and program to the next level.

Taylor Rohatinsky Shares Her Story Of Running For BYU & A 4:33 Mile After Only Two Years Of Running + Exclusive Stories With Sadie Engelhardt

Taylor Rohatinsky has established herself as a notable athlete at Brigham Young University (BYU), ranking fifth all-time in the women's indoor mile with a time of 4:33.79. She played a crucial role in achieving a school record and national-qualifying time of 10:49.24 this past indoor season. Coming from a family with a strong running background, her uncle Josh Rohatinsky was the 2006 NCAA Men's Cross Country Individual National Champion. Taylor herself has achieved impressive rankings at BYU, including third all-time in the 5000m, fourth in the 10,000m, and seventh in the indoor 3000m. Before attending BYU, Taylor excelled in high school track and field, winning multiple championships and setting records in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m events. She has a strong academic background, receiving various academic honors while participating in multiple sports. Taylor's dedication to athletics and impressive achievements make her a standout athlete both on and off the track.

An Inside Look At Sophia Kennedy's Pursuit Of Greatness | Stanford Commit, Indiana State Champ, and Daughter of Olympian Bob Kennedy
Today on the podcast is my very fast friend Sophia Kennedy!
Sophia Kennedy has slowly cemented herself as one of the greatest runners in Indiana state history. Last fall, Sophia placed seventh at the Nike Cross Nationals, a week after taking second at the Champs Sports Midwest Region Championships. Sophia is a two-time qualifier for the Eastbay National Cross Country Championships, placing seventh in 2021. Sophia, the daughter of U.S. distance great Bob Kennedy, was fifth in the two-mile at the 2021 Brooks PR Invitational and eighth in 2022. Running for Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Sophia was second in the 3,200 at the 2022 Indiana state track finals and third in the state in cross country this fall. This indoor season, Sophia placed fourth in the Mile at Nike Indoor Nationals, running 4:45.60.
This outdoor season Sophia became the Indiana State Champion in the 3200m and placed fourth in the Brooks PR 3200m, running a personal best time of 9:57.09. Others may know Sophia's dad, Bob Kennedy, a two-time Olympian who set American Records and won four NCAA titles while at Indiana University. Sophia is committed to run for Stanford University this Fall.

Beyond The Trophy: Will Sumner's Pursuit Of Greatness + Exclusive Insights From His 800m NCAA Win
Today on the podcast is NCAA Champion & Professional Runner for Adidas, Will Sumner!
Will recently competed at the 2023 USATF Track & Field Championships in the 800m a few weeks after winning his first NCAA title in Austin, Texas, where he ran a school record of 1:46.00 in the semifinal round and then a 1:44.26 to collect Georgia's first NCAA outdoor 800m title. This past weekend he placed fifth in the 800m at the US Championships.
In high school, Will left an indelible mark in the world of track and field. He dominated the 400m event, winning the GHSA 7A state title as a junior, and also set a state record of 45.78 seconds. Additionally, his versatility went through in the 800m category, where he held impressive all-time U.S. indoor and outdoor rankings.
