The Sex Life of Mushrooms & DIY Mushroom Cultivation with Willoughby Arevalo

How does a spore become a fertile fungus? Let alone a mushroom? On today's episode, we are joined by the charismatic Willoughby Arevalo who does a spectacular job at peering into the promiscuous world of fungal sex. This stuff isn't just interesting, it's critical knowledge for any serious mycological endeavors.Additionally, we highlight Willoughby's latest book "DIY Mushroom Cultivation", a new favorite here at Mushroom Revival for easy, yet effective ways to grow mushrooms just about anywhere.Willoughby Arevalo is passionate about the ecology of fungi, the ways they shape our world and the ways we shape theirs. His lifelong friendship with fleshy fungi has led him down a mycelial pathway – from a start in field identification and mushroom hunting, branching into cuisine, DIY cultivation, farming, education, writing and eco-arts. In his thirty years of self-motivated inquiry and intimate lived experience with fungi, he has spent the last decade prioritizing sharing mycology with people in communities across North America This has manifested in numerous presentations, art projects, teaching tours, collaborations, gatherings, and his new book, DIY Mushroom Cultivation, out now from New Society Publishers. Between the mycology and art work, and caring for his kid, Uma, he works part time on an organic vegetable farm. Originally from Arcata, California (Traditional Wiyot and Yurok Territory), he lives as a guest on Unceded Coast Salish Territory in Vancouver, Canada.Show notes:DIY Mushroom Cultivation Book: https://microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/artist/willoughby-arevaloSex Life of Mushrooms Performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldOR1rUkNOIhttp://www.vegetationstation.ca/2016/05/the-sex-life-of-mushrooms.htmlFuture Ecologies Interview with Willoughby: https://www.futureecologies.net/patreon/meet-your-fungal-associates-6www.mushroomrevival.comWe are a functional mushroom company and make 100% certified USDA Organic and Vegan mushroom supplements. Fun with Fermentation & Yeast with Gordon Walker

Yes, yeast are fungi! And that is only the beginning of the fun facts on yeast. We are pleased to welcome Gordon Walker, who is a master fermentor. We dive into how yeast differ from the familiar filamentous fungi, why they are so important, how they've changed life as we know it, and the seemingly infinitesimal applications of yeast..Originally from Cambridge, MA, Dr. Gordon Walker moved to California to attend UC Santa Cruz where he developed a passion for scuba diving and home brewing. His interest in yeast and fermentation inspired him to attend UC Davis for graduate school where his doctoral research focused on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in wine production. .Specifically yeast physiology and metabolism as it related to the fermentation ecology. After receiving his doctorate in Biochemistry from UC Davis, Gordon worked at Opus One Winery, isolating wild yeast for wine production and establishing redox potential as process parameter for the wine industry. Beyond his love of yeast, Gordon is an avid mycophile who runs the @fascinatedbyfungi account on Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, and iNaturalist. Beyond his obsession with fungi, he enjoys gardening, cooking for friends, and cats.www.mushroomrevival.comWe are a functional mushroom company and make 100% certified USDA Organic and Vegan mushroom supplements. Conservation of Fungi with Giuliana Furci

Today we highlight the immensely important work of Giuliana Furci. We discuss the conservation of fungi and why it's important. How do we address endangered species of fungi? How can we actually take action and support these critical measures? We also cover women's role in mycology, how and why mycology needs to be incorporated into educational curriculums, and so much more. .Giuliana founded Fungi Foundation in 2012, through which she has focused on the conservation of fungi, sustainable collection of edible wild mushrooms, education, mycological explorations, the curatorship of the FFCL Fungarium, and the creation of national and international mycological capacity. Her achievements have led her to work and partner with important international institutions such as the Farlow Herbarium of Harvard University, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and the Telluride Mushroom Festival, among others. Chile is the only country in the world that has included fungi in its environmental legislation at the highest legislative level, thanks to Giuliana’s fundamental role. This legislation has created dozens of jobs for and initiated formal financing for mycologists in Chile. Giuliana has written and collaborated with numerous publications including “Fungi Austral” and “Field Guide to Fungi of Chile” vol 1. and 2. www.mushroomrevival.comWe are a functional mushroom company and make 100% certified USDA Organic and Vegan mushroom supplements.
