The Humongous Fungus - Dr. Myron Smith

The biggest organism on Earth, by area, is a fungus. Specifically, it's Armillaria solidipes, aka the Honey Fungus. It’s edible, glows in the dark, is UV resistant, and is technically parasitic. Thriving in the Blue Mountains of Oregon, this tremendous individual covers approximately 3.7 sq miles, and could be over 8,000 years old. In today’s episode, we speak with an expert on this fungal genus to help us understand how this individual could be so successful. Prepare for some extraordinary biological factoids and possibly, to have a new favorite mushroom.Dr. Myron Smith is a professor of biology at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Dr. Smith obtained a Bachelor’s degree, specializing in botany, followed by a masters and Ph.D in genetics within the Biotechnology Program at the University of Toronto. His research encompasses genetics, molecular biology, microbiology and general biology. This research spans questions of basic biological interest and has biotechnology applications in diverse areas that include health, agrifood, environment, and biofuels.Topics Covered: Armillaria colonies and the conditions needed to grow to tremendous sizesEcosystem impact from these fungi, specifically in old growth forests Rhizomorphic structure, function and evolution in this genusThe impressive age of The Humongous Fungus, estimated to be up to 4,000 yearsDNA and genome sequencing to identify field colonies of Armillaria spp.Technologies for viewing subterranean fungi  Melanized plate formation upon individual Armillaria spp. EncounteringElectroconductivity of fungi and Armillaria spp.Show notesMyron’s Website: https://myronlsmith.wordpress.com/about/Taxonomy: https://openjournals.wsu.edu/index.php/pnwfungi/article/view/1075Articles mentioned: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uPfchquHlRvSJrmhaKMJWnYOgATj20c0?usp=sharingwww.mushroomrevival.comWe are a functional mushroom company and make 100% certified USDA Organic and Vegan mushroom supplements. Marine Fungi - Cassie Ettinger, PhD

Marine fungi exist. And we know almost nothing about them. These elusive water dwelling fungi offer valuable insight to evolution, phylogenetics, ecological health, drug discovery, remediation and more. We welcome one of the few researchers who are surveying these fungi to share her findings and usher other researchers into the mysterious, essential world of marine fungi. We discuss the nascency of the field, how research is currently being conducted, ideas for how to proceed, and why looking to the ocean for new fungal species is a worthy endeavor.Cassie Ettinger is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Microbiology & Plant Pathology at the UC Riverside advised by Dr. Jason Stajich. She received a Ph.D. in Integrative Genetics and Genomics at UC Davis studying the seagrass microbiome and seagrass mycobiome. Cassie received her B. A. in Molecular and Cell Biology with a Genetics, Genomics and Development emphasis from UC Berkeley in the spring of 2013. While at UC Berkeley she participated in research in Dr. Ellen Simms’ lab on multiple projects involving rhizobia-legume symbiosis. Cassie’s current research interests include plant-microbe interactions, the co-evolution of microbes and their hosts, and marine fungi.Topics CoveredDefining marine fungi, also known as aquatic fungi and water moldsRecognizing the infancy of marine mycology  Evolution of fungi from water to land, and backSurveying, sampling, and growing marine fungi in the labGenomics of marine fungiSeagrass-associated fungi and seagrass microbiomesPigmented fungiHow citizen scientists can advance marine mycologyChytridiomycota, oomycetes, aspergillus, slime molds, marine lichenShow NotesCassie’s Website: https://casett.github.io/index.htmlJonathan Eisen’s Lab: https://phylogenomics.me/people/cassie-ettinger/Instant Ocean: http://www.instantocean.com/products/sea-salt-mixes/sea-salt-mixture.aspxJAMSTEC Specimen: https://www.jamstec.go.jp/e/hot_pictures/?515The Mantle Drilling and Observatory: https://www.jamstec.go.jp/mare3/mdp/e/images/brochure.pdfSTRES: http://www.stresblackfungi.org/Foldscope: https://www.foldscope.com/Freshwater Mushroom: https://fishbio.com/field-notes/wildlife-ecology/mushrooms-underwaterCassie’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/casettronwww.mushroomrevival.comWe are a functional mushroom company and make 100% certified USDA Organic and Vegan mushroom supplements. Saving the Bees with Fungi - Jennifer Han & Nick Naeger

Today we are joined by two of the leading pioneers in apiary (beekeeping) sciences and how fungi are being applied to help fight off pests and support the immune systems of the vital honeybee. Fungi have shown up time and time again as a promising companion to improve our relationship with the planet as consumers, and today's topic is a heavy reckoning with honeybee colony collapse. We first discuss how we rely on honeybees for the incredible contribution they make to wildlife biodiversity and modern agriculture.  Jennifer and Nick then get into the weeds of the many hardships that these bee colonies are facing and the detrimental impacts that are already happening. Inspired by Paul Stamet's observation of bees foraging on the mushrooms bed at Fungi Perfecti, Jennifer and Nick's lab have worked on a number of mushroom extracts for honeybee longevity. Additionally, they have pioneered some the important work of combating varroa mites with a well known soil dwelling fungus and mycopesticide — metarhizium anisopliae.Show notes:WSU Bee Lab: http://bees.wsu.edu/Article featuring Jennifer & Nick:  https://www.goodfruit.com/researchers-look-to-fungi-to-help-honeybees/Beeinformed: https://beeinformed.org/The Pollinator Partnership: https://www.pollinator.org/Project Apis m.: https://www.projectapism.org/https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/15r3xEFrI-iQ4azQgeCTmgKVJmotUm5OO?usp=sharingwww.mushroomrevival.comWe are a functional mushroom company and make 100% certified USDA Organic and Vegan mushroom supplements.
