What Difference Does It Make: Translator Goes Beyond Today

Translator was one of those bands on the precipice of breaking big in the 80s. Signed to local indie label 415 Records, they soon found themselves part of the big-time music business when their label signed a distribution deal with Columbia Records. In 1982, their single, "Everywhere That I'm Not”, became popular on the burgeoning college radio circuit.  In 1986, the band decided to call it quits, scheduling a hometown show to reward their ardent fan base with a final San Francisco show. This performance, along with two new songs, are now available on an LP entitled Translator--Beyond Today: Live at the Farm San Francisco 1986. Lead singer/guitarist Steve Barton and drummer Dave Scheff join the podcast to look back at their 80s musical journey, as well as offer some insight into new developments within the band.  Learn more about your ad choices. Vinyl Relics EPYSODE 42: "Before The Dream Faded" by The Misunderstood

EPYSODE 42: "Before The Dream Faded". Guest: Misunderstood lead singer Rick Brown. In this week’s epysode of The Vinyl Relics Podcast, we turn the spotlight on one of the most tragically overlooked albums of the psychedelic era... "Before the Dream Faded" by The Misunderstood. Formed in Riverside, California and exiled to London in the mid-'60s, The Misunderstood fused American garage rock with British psychedelia, creating a sound that was years ahead of its time. With searing slide guitar, political lyrics, and sonic ambition to spare, their music foreshadowed both heavy rock and acid experimentation and yet, they faded before they could truly rise. We’re joined by guest Rick Brown, the band’s original lead singer, who shares powerful firsthand stories about the band's creative vision, their turbulent rise, and the mysterious circumstances that tore them apart just as they were poised for greatness. It's one of the most fascinating “what coulda been” stories in rock history. I hope you dig "Before The Dream Faded" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X here --> @VinylRelicsPod Email me here --> farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com   ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. Here's a link to a Spotify playlist for all the tracks featured ( *denotes track is not available on Spotify): https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1Pr8RWEhBaLCgU1fP5HAmT?si=56f23d77f6eb4188 GENESIS "Angeline" THE ANIMALS "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" THE MISUNDERSTOOD "End Of Time" THE MISUNDERSTOOD "She Got Me" (version 1) THE MISUNDERSTOOD "She Got Me" (version 2) THE MISUNDERSTOOD "Why" THE MISUNDERSTOOD "Thunder 'N Lightnin'" GLEN CAMPBELL "Rhinestone Cowboy" LEON MCAULIFFE & HIS WESTERN STRING BAND “Take It Away, Leon” *THE GOLDTONES “Gutterball” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Who’s Been Talkin’” THE YARDBIRDS “Mister, You’re A Better Man Than I” THE YARDBIRDS “I’m A Man” THE CREATION “Making Time” THE YARDBIRDS “Shapes Of Things” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Children Of The Sun” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “My Mind” *THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Who Do You Love” THE YARDBIRDS “Still I’m Sad”  THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I Unseen” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Find The Hidden Door” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I Can Take You To The Sun” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I’m Not Talking” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Who’s Been Talking” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I Need Your Love” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “You Don’t Have To Go” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “I Cried My Eyes Out” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Like I Do” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “You’ve Got Me Crying Over Love” *THE DIRTY BLUES BAND “Checking Up On My Baby” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Golden Glass” JUICY LUCY “Who Do You Love” HIGH TIDE “Nowhere” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “No Survivors” THE MISUNDERSTOOD “Mona” ??MYSTERY ARTIST?? tune in next week to find out...
