RNRA Digs Deeper: The USA vs John Lennon
Dig into the archives for a conversation about John Lennon's five-year legal battle against the U.S. government's attempt to deport him. This episode explores the politically charged atmosphere of the early 1970s, where the Nixon administration, wary of Lennon’s anti-war stance and influence over a new generation of voters, sought to silence him.We revisit a powerful interview with the late Leon Wildes, the brilliant immigration attorney who represented John and Yoko, along with his son Michael Wildes. They reveal the strategies, pressures, and ultimate triumphs of a historic legal saga that tested the foundations of American justice and established a lasting legal precedent.
Guest
Leon Wildes was the renowned immigration attorney who successfully represented John Lennon and Yoko Ono against the U.S. government's deportation efforts. An adjunct professor of law and a leading expert in the field, he authored the book John Lennon vs. The U.S.A., detailing the landmark case. His son, Michael Wildes, is the managing partner of Wildes & Weinberg P.C. and continues his father's influential work in immigration law.

Only Three Lads: The dB's Peter Holsapple - Top 5 Debut Solo Albums
Based on his experiences on both sides of the record store counter, Peter Holsapple lovingly pokes a little fun at obsessive music nerds on a track from his new solo album : "I got A Love Supreme / I got a Soft Machine / I got the Dave Clark Five / I got Slade Alive / I got a Shonen Knife / I got Repeat When Necessary, Repeat When Necessary. I'm that kind of guy!" Yep, we're those kind of guys...and fortunately Peter is too, because he is our Third Lad this week!
This week's discussion revolves around our Top 5 Debut Solo Albums - in other words, the first album released by an artist apart from or after their well known group.
While you'd have to go back to 1997 for Peter Holsapple's official debut solo album, he's arguably just released his best yet - The Face of 68, out now on Label 51 Recordings. It's a tight, lean, rocking affair that finds the dB's singer/songwriter's knack for melody and songcraft still incredibly sharp after roughly 50 years of making records. Along with a deep dive into The Face of 68, we also chat about his proto-punk beginnings with Little Diesel, being shown how it's done by the legendary Alex Chilton, life on the road with R.E.M. and Hootie and the Blowfish, supergroup collectives the Continental Drifters, the Salt Collective, and the Big Star Quintet, and the flurry of dB's related activity including Propeller Sound Recordings reissue campaign and 2024's reunion shows.

No Filler - Stratospheric Sludge: The Deep Space Cuts of Hum's Defining Record
We blast off into the stratosphere with Hum's 1995 masterpiece You'd Prefer An Astronaut, the Champaign, Illinois band's sonic collision of shoegaze shimmer and bone-crushing sludge metal. While MTV latched onto "Stars," the album's real treasures lie in the deep space between those radio moments—massive, swirling guitar walls courtesy of Matt Talbott and Tim Lash that feel like entire galaxies collapsing in slow motion. This is the record that proved heavy music could be beautiful, and shoegaze could absolutely crush. Strap in for lift-off.

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Dire Straits - Making Movies
Mark Knopfler is a celebrated guitar player and songwriter. And while his voice may not win awards for being pretty, his world-weary story songs fit his oakey-mellow vocals perfectly. Sultans of Swing of Dire Straits eponymous debut in 1978 catapulted Mark and the band to stardom with gold and platinum sales around the world. Though their 1979 follow up also sold well it didn't sell nearly as well as the first. So the band made a couple of changes.
David Knopfler, Mark's brother and DS rhythm guitarist, left the band for other pursuits. And instead of recording in The Bahamas, Mark, John Illsley (bass) and Pick Withers (drums) relocated to New York with legendary producer Jimmy Iovine. Jimmy's connection to Bruce Springsteen led to E Street Band pianist Roy Bittan joining the sessions and really giving texture, rhythm and soul to Knopfler's songs.
Though the timeless Romeo and Juliet wasn't a hit in the US, it has become a classic in pop culture for romantic scenes. Expresso Love gives Mark a chance to rip a fun solo while sharing the spotlight with Bittan on Tunnel of Love, Solid Rock and classic rock radio staple Skateaway. Though these songs are great on Making Movies, they really shined on the 1984 live album, Alchemy - one we have reviewed and one of The Wolf's very favorites.
If you're a Brothers in Arms or Greatest Hits only fan, we think you'll like this one as the piano, the guitar and Mark's lyrics set landscapes and tell the stories of a man trying to make it in the fast-paced world of rock n roll!
