See Hear Podcast Episode 117 - True Stories

Did you ever read rags with headlines like “I had an alien love child” or “Psycho seagull stole dog from my garden” or “Monster rats the size of cows”? No? You're missing out on a Wild...Wild....Life.Welcome to episode 117 of See Hear Podcast.Writers Stephen Toblowsky and Beth Henley met Talking Head, David Byrne, and had a conversation about newspaper articles he'd read with bizarre things happening to ordinary people, and wouldn't it be interesting to come up with a script for a film using that idea as a basis. Beth and Stephen came up with said script, but Byrne rewrote much of it....the result is his 1986 film, True Stories.True Stories looks at a fictional town in Texas celebrating its 150th anniversary. In particular it looks at some of the peculiarities of the town using a 4th wall breaking Byrne to guide us around that town. Where's the music connection???? It is a musical of sorts, but more relevant to the story, I contend that the town is like an enclosed snow cone and music is the very air the town breathes. Unfortunately, Tim wasn't available to record, but Kerry and I had a fine conversation about Talking Heads, finding love, conspiracy theorists, community, the fine line between gentle parody and being patronising, constant lying to get attention....and of course, music....cos that's what we do. Was the film ultimately satisfying? Tune in and find out what we thought. You wanna follow along? The film is currently playing on a variety of streaming services or may be in your DVD library if you still believe in physical media. If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. Prisoners of Rock and Roll - The Huge Sounds of Arena Rock

Rock and roll got really big in the 1970s. We don’t mean in terms of popularity, although it had that going for it too. We mean the sounds got big. The audiences got big. The performances got big. Arena rock was loose definition for commercial, radio-friendly music designed to be played in big stadiums to tens of thousands of people with singalong choruses and huge stage productions. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame calls this era the golden age of hard rock in terms of its commercial airplay, but it also has its critics. People also call it dad rock, old wave, and corporate rock because it was music for mostly middle class white dudes powered by big corporate record labels. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re going to look at both sides of the argument, talk about bands like Journey, Boston, Foreigner, Kansas, and more. Let’s hit it.Episode PlaylistsCheck out all of the songs we discussed in this week's episode here.Get In TouchCheck us out online, on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. or drops us an email at show@prisonersofrockandroll.com.Or if you're in Philadelphia, come visit our home base at McCusker's Tavern. Rock and/or Roll: DEATH SS - HORROR OR COMEDY?

Death SS were an Italian metal band formed in 1977. They performed whilst clad in the most basic children's Halloween costumes. How many in the audience were laughing? None, according to the band's less than modest "visionary," Steve Sylvester, who wrote a book about the band's early days called The Necromancer of Rock. BJ got his hands on a copy. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Metallica - Ride The LIghtning

In the summer of 1984, Metallica were not yet the Metal Gods and household names they are now. They were a band with one record under their belt (Kill Em All, hear UAWIL #138 for our review with The Hook Rocks Jay Scott), some experience playing bigger stages as an opening act and a small but loyal following. However, their US record company didn't have the money to pay for a new album so James, Kirk, Cliff and Lars traveled to Copenhagen and crashed in the studio as producer Fleming Rasmussen helped them pull together what would become their 2nd album, Ride The Lightning. As the album turns 40, we reminisce about how we came to know this metal classic, relive hearing them play (most) of the album live and debate if this is indeed ther best ever (Master Of Puppets is neck and neck according to us).We can really hear the progress on Ride The Lightning vs. the 1st album as the songs are tight with more complexity yet more melodic. And while the lyrics are very intelligent and clear, they deal with very heavy topics like nuclear war (Fight Fire With Fire), suicide (Fade To Black), ancient plagues (Creeping Death) and the horrors of war (For Whom The Bell Tolls). Cliff Burton's psychedelic wah-wah bass is not only unique but a driver of the melody that is inherent in these thrash classics. James Hetfield's powerful riffs are among the best he's ever recorded and provides that steady crunch against which Kirk Hammett can lay everything from frantic solos to trippy fills. This album remains #1 in the heart one of your hosts from the Metallica catalog - the other is on the fence. It's hard to believe Ride The Lightning turns 40 on July 27, 2024 but we love this one and had fun going track by track.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteUgly American Werewolf in London Store - Get your Wolf merch and use code 10OFF2023 to save 10%!Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%!TwitterThreadsInstagramYouTubeLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.com Learn more about your ad choices. Only Three Lads: Author/Former Groupie Linda Chadwick - Top 5 Concert Experiences

It's another introspective week spent going down memory lane, as we relive some of the best concert experiences from our respective pasts. And, believe us, that's no easy feat with quite literally thousands of concerts collectively between us. Yowsah!Yes, you could say that our "Third Lad" this week is quite the authority on the subject, as Linda Chadwick was a Texas groupie on the hard rock and metal scenes between 1982 - 1987. Weaving together a series of often hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes salacious, but always remarkable tales about Pantera, KISS, Dio, Deep Purple, Metallica, Motorhead, Poison, Whitesnake, Aerosmith, Guns n' Roses and more, On The Road: A Texas Groupie's Memoir blends vivid storytelling with nostalgic anecdotes. Meet passionate fans, ambitious musicians, and unforgettable groupies, all brought together by a shared love for rock 'n' roll. Experience the highs of sold-out concerts, the lows of band breakups, and the exhilaration of that first chord. As you delve deeper, discover how music was not only a form of entertainment but a way of life, a rebellion, a movement that shaped a generation. This book is more than a mere recollection-it's a tribute to a time when melodies held memories, lyrics voiced dreams, and every beat was a heartbeat of an era.Since leaving groupie life behind, Linda Chadwick is a happy married wife of more than 30 years, with two grown children and many fur babies. This lifelong Texas girl recently relocated to Costa Rica, the beautiful home to "a lot of things that can kill you." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
