My Rock Moment: Canyon Songs of Love & Heartbreak with Emmeline Summerton of Lost Canyons LA

Love, lust, and heartbreak are the secret soundtrack of the LA canyons. In this episode of My Rock Moment we welcome Emmeline Summerton of Instagram's Lost Canyons LA, a historian of the LA Canyons and former writer of the New Topanga Times. Together we trace that soundtrack through eight songs — uncovering the romance, the messiness and the broken hearts behind the lyrics. We start with “Guinnevere,” David Crosby’s mysterious song inspired by 3 women — Christine Hinton, Joni Mitchell, and the surprising third muse, “Delta Lady” — Leon Russell’s ode to Rita Coolidge and the wild, studio-to-road romance that sent them straight into Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs tour. Then we move to the Mamas & the Papas’ “Go Where You Wanna Go,” a sunny single born from the band’s very messy affairs.    From there:  “Our House,” Graham Nash’s tiny, perfect snapshot of life with Joni Mitchell in Laurel Canyon — ordinary moments made into a classic. Then Joni’s own “All I Want’ about her relationship with James Taylor. We’ll also unpack “Leather and Lace,” the duet that reunited Stevie Nicks and Don Henley after a broken romance and leer jet flirtations; “Faithless Love,” J.D. Souther’s devastating ballad given wings by Linda Ronstadt during their fraught romance and end with Neil Young’s "A Man Needs a Maid" off of Harvest. This is a tour of romance and ruin, tenderness and betrayal — the songs that turned private heartbreak into something the rest of us could sing along to. We’ll share the stories behind each track and the music that made the canyons heartbreak famous. Only Three Lads: Willie Nile's Top 5 Songs About New York

We’re in a New York State of Mind.  Sure, L.A. has beaches and sun, San Francisco clings onto its peace and love vibes, Chicago oozes the blues, and these make for remarkable settings for great songs, but New York…New York is something different.  She’s an active participant in the music, the protagonist, the antagonist, a vessel for vibrancy, romance, drama, grit, grime, decay, revitalization, glamour, hope.  The American dream.  From street corner doo woo groups to Bleeker Street folkies to CBGB punks to Brooklyn indie rock hopefuls, New York has long had a story to tell through the eyes, minds, and voices of the artists who chronicle her, some of whom are intrinsically intertwined with heartbeat of the city.  One of the finest ever to do it is undoubtedly the man we are fortunate enough to call our Third Lad.  After coming up in the New York folk clubs of the early '70s and the punk clubs of the latter half of the decade, Willie Nile released his self titled debut album on Arista in 1980 to rave reviews, with Stereo Review naming it the album of the year right alongside The Clash’s London Calling also earning him a handpicked slot opening for The Who on their 1980 U.S. tour.  After two more major label records, Willie has released a series of acclaimed indie releases, including 2006’s Streets Of New York, 2013’s American Ride, 2020’s New York At Night, and 2021’s The Day The Earth Stood Still.  He’s now back with his first 15th studio album and 21st LP overall, The Great Yellow Light, a passionate, anthemic blend of thundering rockers and sensitive ballads.  It’s a stellar addition to a brilliant and literate catalogue that has thrilled Willie Nile ardent fans and friends such as Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Lou Reed, Ian Hunter, Graham Parker, Lucinda Williams, and Little Steven.  Learn more about your ad choices. No Filler - Stratospheric Sludge: The Deep Space Cuts of Hum's Defining Record

We blast off into the stratosphere with Hum's 1995 masterpiece You'd Prefer An Astronaut, the Champaign, Illinois band's sonic collision of shoegaze shimmer and bone-crushing sludge metal. While MTV latched onto "Stars," the album's real treasures lie in the deep space between those radio moments—massive, swirling guitar walls courtesy of Matt Talbott and Tim Lash that feel like entire galaxies collapsing in slow motion. This is the record that proved heavy music could be beautiful, and shoegaze could absolutely crush. Strap in for lift-off. VINYL RELICS/MU (1971): Cosmic Rock & the Lost Continent Groove

EPYSODE 61: "MU" by MU. Guest: Merrell Fankhauser. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. This week we journey into the cosmic unknown with "MU" , the cult 1971 debut album from Merrell Fankhauser’s post-H.M.S. Bounty band, formed with ex-Captain Beefheart guitarist Jeff Cotton (aka Antennae Jimmy Semens). With exclusive commentary from Merrell himself, we uncover the origins of the band’s name (a nod to the mythical lost continent of MU), the spiritual inspiration behind the tracks, and the band’s eventual migration to Maui in search of metaphysical truth and better vibes. Blending desert blues, psychedelic folk, and exploratory jam-rock, "MU"  is a hidden gem of the early ’70s underground, one that has quietly influenced generations of psych-heads, crate-diggers, and cosmic seekers. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when acoustic blues, psychedelia, and esoteric mysticism collide, this epysode is your portal. I hope you dig "MU" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X @VinylRelicsPod Email me @  farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com   ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. Here's a link to a Spotify playlist for all the tracks featured.
