38: Inmate De-escalation and Communication

Since the beginning of law enforcement and corrections, officers have had to verbally try and change the actions of others to prevent force from being used to control the situation.  There have always been those who could communicate in this manner well.  Those officers were able to get their point across without resorting to force.  Some were able to do it by helping the person work through the logical reasons they should or shouldn’t continue their actions or behavior.  Other officers had that glint in their eye that struck fear in the mind of others and alluded to the unpleasant possibilities of what could happen if they stayed their course.  I think I was able to use a little of both. But when the outcome is force of any kind, there has also always been a side that believes the fault lies with the officer for not giving them a chance, for not talking them out of it, for not shooting them in the foot instead of the chest when they attacked you.  They do not believe in force for any reason.  Like everything else in life, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.  Not every incident needs to be met with force nor can every incident be solved through verbal communication alone.I do believe that every incident can be improved with de-escalation.  Concepts of Non-Lethal Force by Sid HealNever Split the Difference by Chris VossFinding Your Purpose: Crafting a Personal Vision Statement to Guide Your Life and Career! by Michael CantrellKeys to Your New Career: Information and Guidance to Get Hired and Be Successful as a Correctional or Detention Officer by Michael CantrellSend us a text Support the showAlso, check out Michael's newest book - POWER SKILLS: Emotional Intelligence and Soft Skills for Correctional Officers, First Responders, and Beyond https://amzn.to/4mBeog5 See Michael's newest Children's Books here: www.CantrellWrites.com Support the show ======================= Contact me: mike@theprisonofficer.com Buy Me a Cup of Coffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/mikeml Keys to Your New Career: Information and Guidance to Get Hired and Be Successful as a Correctional or Detention Officer https://amzn.to/4g0mSLw Finding Your Purpose: Crafting a Personal Vision Statement to Guide Your Life and Career https://amzn.to/3HV4dUG Take care of each other and Be Safe behind those walls and fences! #prisonofficerpodcast #leadership #podcast @theprisonofficerpodcast Contact us: mike@theprisonofficer.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThePrisonOfficerTake care of each other and Be Safe behind those walls and fences!

37: San Quentin State Prison - Interview w/Ron

You know, whenever the discussion of the roughest, toughest prisons comes up, there are several names that come to everyone’s mind…Alcatraz, Sing Sing, Leavenworth, Joliet, and of course San Quentin.Opened in 1852, San Quentin State Prison in California is one of those violent prisons that has become part of our national culture.  A prison that currently houses more than 3300 inmates (700 of those in the prison’s Condemned Unit), San Quentin has been immortalized in movies, TV, literature, and even a Johnny Cash song.  My guest today is Ron, who spent a career working at San Quentin State Prison and he is here today to tell us his story.Behind San Quentin's Walls: The History of California’s Legendary Prison and Its Inmates, 1851-1900Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood - Danny TrejoSend us a text Support the showAlso, check out Michael's newest book - POWER SKILLS: Emotional Intelligence and Soft Skills for Correctional Officers, First Responders, and Beyond https://amzn.to/4mBeog5 See Michael's newest Children's Books here: www.CantrellWrites.com Support the show ======================= Contact me: mike@theprisonofficer.com Buy Me a Cup of Coffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/mikeml Keys to Your New Career: Information and Guidance to Get Hired and Be Successful as a Correctional or Detention Officer https://amzn.to/4g0mSLw Finding Your Purpose: Crafting a Personal Vision Statement to Guide Your Life and Career https://amzn.to/3HV4dUG Take care of each other and Be Safe behind those walls and fences! #prisonofficerpodcast #leadership #podcast @theprisonofficerpodcast Contact us: mike@theprisonofficer.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThePrisonOfficerTake care of each other and Be Safe behind those walls and fences!

36: Change is Inevitable - Leaving the Generation Gap Behind Us

A cartoon I once saw showed a sinking boat with sailors in it.  One end is going underwater, and a couple of sailors are bailing as fast as they can to no avail.  The other end of the boat is still out of the water and the characters on the other end are saying, “I’m glad it’s not our end of the boat that is sinking." Wake up, people! It’s the same boat, if one end sinks the whole boat sinks. There is a new generation of correctional officers coming on board.  They bring a different skill set to the table, and they are not like the generations before them.  Nor should they be.  But, if they don't pick up the mantle, there is nobody else.  In this episode, I discuss the different generations, the old and the new.  The differing expectations, and what needs to be done to get our prisons staffed with great prison officers.Who Moved My Cheese?: An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your LifeHow To Manage Millennials: A Guide To Developing The Young Workers: Adaptations In the WorkplaceFinding Your Purpose: Crafting a Personal Vision Statement to Guide Your Life and Career! by Michael CantrellKeys to Your New Career: Information and Guidance to Get Hired and Be Successful as a Correctional or Detention Officer by Michael CantrellSend us a text Support the showAlso, check out Michael's newest book - POWER SKILLS: Emotional Intelligence and Soft Skills for Correctional Officers, First Responders, and Beyond https://amzn.to/4mBeog5 See Michael's newest Children's Books here: www.CantrellWrites.com Support the show ======================= Contact me: mike@theprisonofficer.com Buy Me a Cup of Coffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/mikeml Keys to Your New Career: Information and Guidance to Get Hired and Be Successful as a Correctional or Detention Officer https://amzn.to/4g0mSLw Finding Your Purpose: Crafting a Personal Vision Statement to Guide Your Life and Career https://amzn.to/3HV4dUG Take care of each other and Be Safe behind those walls and fences! #prisonofficerpodcast #leadership #podcast @theprisonofficerpodcast Contact us: mike@theprisonofficer.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThePrisonOfficerTake care of each other and Be Safe behind those walls and fences!

35: Strangeways - A Prison Officer's Story - Interview w/Neil "Sam" Samworth

My guest today is Neil "Sam" Samworth, former UK prison officer and the author of Strangeways – A Prison Officer’s Story.  Sam spent eleven years working as a prison officer in HMP Manchester, a prison also known as  Strangeways.   His book Strangeways is a shocking and at times darkly funny account of life in a high-security prison. Sam tackles cell fires and self-harmers and goes head to head with some of the most dangerous men in the country.  We spend time discussing the differences and the common ground between the US and UK prison systems.  We talk about it the good, the bad, and the ugly, including his personal struggle with PTSD.Real Porridge with Sam Samworth https://www.youtube.com/c/RealPorridgePodcastStrangeways: A Prison Officers Story - Sam SamworthStrangeways Unlocked: The Shocking Truth about Life Behind Bars - Sam SamworthSend us a text Support the showAlso, check out Michael's newest book - POWER SKILLS: Emotional Intelligence and Soft Skills for Correctional Officers, First Responders, and Beyond https://amzn.to/4mBeog5 See Michael's newest Children's Books here: www.CantrellWrites.com Support the show ======================= Contact me: mike@theprisonofficer.com Buy Me a Cup of Coffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/mikeml Keys to Your New Career: Information and Guidance to Get Hired and Be Successful as a Correctional or Detention Officer https://amzn.to/4g0mSLw Finding Your Purpose: Crafting a Personal Vision Statement to Guide Your Life and Career https://amzn.to/3HV4dUG Take care of each other and Be Safe behind those walls and fences! #prisonofficerpodcast #leadership #podcast @theprisonofficerpodcast Contact us: mike@theprisonofficer.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThePrisonOfficerTake care of each other and Be Safe behind those walls and fences!
