BARBARA PORTER | Heritage Preservation in Jordan | Conversations
Barbara A. Porter talked about archaeological research and heritage preservation in Jordan.Barbara A. Porter was the Director of the American Center of Oriental Research in Jordan from April 2006 to March 2020. ACOR was established in 1968 and its permanent headquarters in Amman opened in 1986 across from the University of Jordan. From the outset, ACOR (now the American Center of Research, www.acorjordan.org) has been intrinsically involved in the archaeology and heritage of Jordan and has worked closely with the Department of Antiquities. In her 14 years as director, she came to know the country well and she plans to share some insights into certain sites and periods. Myrna Atalla talked about philanthropy in the Middle East and the work of Alfanar, London.Since 2010, Myrna Atalla has overseen Alfanar's growth and expansion. Prior to joining Alfanar, Atalla worked for the National Democratic Insititute for International Affairs (NDI) in Beirut, Lebanon from 2004 to 2008, managing its civil society strengthening partnerships. Atalla also engaged in regional initiatives, including women's candidate training and international election observation missions in Egypt, Jordan Morocco and Yemen. He is the founder of Interlink Publishing, a 35-year-old, Massachusetts-based independent publishing house specializing in fiction-in-translation, history and current affairs, illustrated childrenβs books, and award-winning international cookbooks. He is the author of several books including, Kilimanjaro: A Photographic Journey to the Roof of Africa. Most recently, he co-edited the winter issue of the Massachusetts Review focusing on Mediterranean literature and contributed a piece to Being Palestinian: Personal Reflections on Palestinian Identity in the Diaspora (Edinburgh University Press). He is the recipient of NYUβs Founderβs Day Award for outstanding scholarship, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committeeβs Alex Odeh Award and The Palestinian Heritage Foundation Achievement Award. The Evolution of Moroccan Cuisine | Nargisse Benkabbou
Nargisse Benkabbou talked about her approaches to Moroccan Cuisine and her chosen single ingredient: Tagine.Nargisse Benkabbou was raised in Brussels, where she grew up in a strongly food-oriented family that continually nurtured her connection with her roots and country of origin, Morocco. After living in Brussels and Paris, Nargisse moved to London to pursue her education in Politics only to realize that her love for cooking and food was a real passion. After training at Leiths School of Food and Wine, she started sharing her Moroccan recipes 'with a twist' inspired by her home country. Nargisse is currently Executive Chef at L'Mida Marrakech, her work involves recipe and menu development, cooking classes and hosting supper clubs. Each recipe that Nargisse produces is a celebration of her heritage and a care for simplicity and modernity. Andrew Simon talked about his latest book "Media of the Masses: Cassette Culture in Modern Egypt." Media of the Masses investigates the social life of an everyday technologyβthe cassette tapeβto offer a multisensory history of modern Egypt. Over the 1970s and 1980s, cassettes became a ubiquitous presence in Egyptian homes and stores.Andrew Simon is a historian of media, popular culture, and the modern Middle East. He holds a B.A. in Arabic, Middle East, and Islamic Studies from Duke University and was a fellow at the Center for Arabic Study Abroad in Cairo during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University and is currently serving as a lecturer at Dartmouth. Andrew's interdisciplinary research has received generous support from the Social Science Research Council and the American Research Center in Egypt, and his work has been published in the International Journal of Middle East Studiesand cited in the Washington Post. FAROUK EL-BAZ | Space Science | Tijara
Farouk El-Baz talked about his career in archaeology, electrical engineering, space, and geology. He was a lead scientist on the NASA Apollo 11 team in 1969.Egyptian born Farouk El Baz has been research professor and director of the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University since 1986. While working with the Apollo Space Program (1967-72), he applied satellite imagery to moon surfaces and chaired the Astronaut Training Group. He later studied the arid areas of the world and used his analysis of space photography to select areas for investigation on the ground in Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, China, and India. Much of his career has been spent applying space technology to geography, geology, archaeology, and the environment. He used his remote sensing technology to develop underground water resources in Egypt and to document the extent of destruction following the first Gulf war. OMAR BERRADA | Moroccan Film | Conversations
Omar Berrada talked about his major written works on migration and racial politics.Omar Berrada is a writer and curator, and the director of Dar al-MaβmΓ»n, a library and artists residency in Marrakech. His work focuses on the politics of translation and intergenerational transmission. He is the author of the poetry collection Clonal Hum (2020), and the editor or co-editor of several books, including The Africans, a volume on racial dynamics in North Africa (2016), and La SeptiΓ¨me Porte, Ahmed Bouananiβs posthumous history of Moroccan cinema (2020). His writing was published in numerous exhibition catalogs, magazines and anthologies, including Frieze, Bidoun, Asymptote, The University of California Book of North African Literature, and Poetic Justice: An Anthology of Contemporary Moroccan Poetry. KHALED BEYDOUN | Islamophobia & Law | Conversations
Khaled Beydoun talked his work on race theory, islamophobia, national security policy, civil liberties, and citizenship.Khaled A. Beydoun is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, and Senior Affiliated Faculty at the University of California Berkeley Islamophobia Research & Documentation Project. A Critical Race Theorist, Professor Beydounβs research examines the legal construction of Arab and Muslim American identity, the foundational and modern development of Islamophobia, and the intersection of national security policy, civil liberties and citizenship. A leading scholar on legal matters germane to civil rights and Muslim America, Professor Beydounβs scholarship has been featured in top law journals, including: the Columbia Law Review, the California Law Review, the UCLA Law Review, the Harvard Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Law Review, and the Illinois Law Review. His book, Islamophobia: An American Story (Univ. of California Press), will be released in early 2018. Complimenting his legal research and scholarship, Professor Beydoun is an active public intellectual. In addition to his regular commentary in Al-Jazeera English, Professor Beydounβs insight has been featured in the Washington Post, the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Time, Salon, and ESPN; and television and radio news programming including CNN, the BBC, Fox, NBC and ABC News. In addition, Professor Beydoun has served as a consultant for the U.S. Census Bureau, the African American Policy Forum, and a number of colleges and universities.
