Do you set aside the time and energy for innovation? Do you set aside the same time and energy for maintaining? Kevin sits down with Lee Vinsel and Andy Russell, authors of The Innovation Delusion: How our Obsession With the New Has Disrupted the Work that Matters Most. Vinsel and Russell are not opposed to creating and new things; however, they believe we have put too much faith in innovation to cure our problems. Therefore, we tend to neglect what is already there and create a society out of balance. A moment of innovation is just that, a moment in time. We need cognitive space to think about maintenance. Maintenance makes up a large part of human activity, yet we ignore it or even look down on the people who do that work (right now, we are calling those folks “essential workers). Leaders need to recognize that maintenance sustains success, maintenance depends on the culture, and maintenance requires constant care. For these things to happen, we may need creativity and innovation. Here’s a fact: Kids LOVE Halloween. Why? Because of the rewards, of course. The candy! And while they are thinking about the sweet treats, they are also thinking about being scared. Now when you think about it, preparing to be a leader is eerily similar. You think about it, you plan for it, you expect some benefits to come from it and….you’ll probably be scared at some point of the unexpected. But when you realize the fact that there will be unexpected and unpredictable circumstances, you will actually be able to better deal with them. A man in his 90’s recently surveyed his garage which was filled with the remnants from an old business, activities and hobbies and memories. LOTS of memories. And at the request of his children, he brought in a dumpster. And after just a few hours of work, it was filled to the brim. This man is my father-in-law. And this is the dumpster. during the course of the day, he was asked many times: Keep or Toss? And clearly that answer was often TOSS. As leaders, we must ask this question of ourselves as well: Should we keep it or toss it? Like the garage, you have to pull things out and ask that question, otherwise things pile up – things that might not be serving you. EMPATHY: The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another.
