What makes Amazon different? What are the secrets to their success? Bill Carr would say they aren't really secrets, but it does take innovative management. Bill is a former Amazon executive and the co-author with Colin Bryer of Working Backwards: Insights, Stories and Secrets from Inside Amazon. Bill and Kevin dig deep into the idea of working backwards. It starts with leaders being customer-obsessed, finding out what they want/need and work backward. This isn't as easy as it sounds. We meet with lots of folks each day, many of whom are not our customers. So, we need to go out of our way to think about the customer. I completely agree that we must be protective of our time and that how we spend our time is directly correlated to our success. And yet…I am not advocating that we immediately say NO to everything. It's important to use judgement always in our decisions. And that when we do say no, we say it with love. Ernest Hemingway said, "When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen." Ximena Vengoechea thinks Ernest may be on to something. She is the author of Listen Like You Mean It: Reclaiming the Lost Art of True Connection. As a user researcher, she understands the importance of listening for understanding. This is true for product research and organizational success. Often, we find ourselves default listening. We are sort of paying attention, yet we don't get the true experience or the emotions of the talker. Ximena tells Kevin we need to move to empathetic listening, which starts with the intention to listen. A listening mindset begins with humility, curiosity, and empathy. When I was growing up, most households only had one phone and it was usually in the kitchen. And teens spent alllll the time on that phone. Today's teens also spend a lot of time on the phone, as do most of us. These tiny devices consume so much of our time and attention, although we rarely use them anymore for what they were originally designed for – to TALK on them. And today, I'm reminding you of all of the reasons and benefits why the next time you pick up your phone, it should be to talk into it.
