What it Means to be a Long-Distance Leader with Wayne Turmel

Remote work isn’t new. Technology has allowed organizations to have offices not only on different coasts but in different countries. We have started to work across time zones and cultures. In 2018, Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel published the Long-Distance Leader and reminded leaders the principles didn’t change, just the location. In March of 2019, there was a huge shift to remote work; much of it unplanned. They found there was a difference between working from home and being a productive remote teammate. Wayne, co-founder of the Remote Leadership Institute, joins Kevin to discuss their latest book, The Long-Distance Teammate: Stay Engaged and Connected While Working Anywhere. There is a difference between being just a team member and a teammate. We need to be more intentional to create connections and take responsibility for our growth. Wayne shares ideas for leaders and discusses some of the challenges we may see in 2021. We are not going back to the way things were. This episode is brought to you by… Unleashing Your Remarkable Potential, Kevin’s free weekly e-newsletter. Can We or Should We? - Thoughts from Kevin

Can we? Should we? Both questions are important and the difference between the two is just one small word. But that small word makes a significant difference in how you answer the question. In this episode, I’m helping you to think about this distinction with a few thoughts and maybe a couple of other questions. Tweet it out: Can you do something vs. should you do that thing. Likely you’ll be better served to ask both questions before you decide. @KevinEikenberry From This Episode: If you’d like to receive my daily email and get a short, inspiring message each day, you can learn more and sign up here.

Lessons From Bold Leaders That Changed History with Jan-Benedict Steenkamp

We can use the past to think about leading today and the future. The means may be different (hello social media), yet the principles are similar. Jan-Benedict Steenkamp is Massey Distinguished Professor of Marketing at the University of North Carolina and author. His latest book is Time to Lead: Lessons for Today’s Leaders from Bold Decisions That Changed History. JB looks at leadership through a historical and marketing lens. After all, aren’t leaders trying to brand themselves as someone to follow? JB and Kevin discuss some of history’s most decisive leaders and events and ties it to today’s leadership methods. JB also shares seven leadership styles. There is no one right leadership style, as history shows all can be successful. However, you cannot be a good leader if you are not authentic. Reverse-Gossip - Thoughts from Kevin

Gossip is definitely not something we love or that we hope to have at any workplace. In fact, if we could REVERSE gossip, that would solve many conflicts and issues at work. But before we get to the idea of reversing gossip, we must first discuss two facts about gossip as a whole: 1. Gossip is negative. 2. Gossip grows in the dark. So knowing these two pieces of information, now let's reverse-engineer gossip. Check out this episode for specific tips on how to do just this.
