Insights into the science of Leadership at Amazon with Bill Carr
What makes Amazon different? What are the secrets to their success? Bill Carr would say they aren't really secrets, but it does take innovative management. Bill is a former Amazon executive and the co-author with Colin Bryer of Working Backwards: Insights, Stories and Secrets from Inside Amazon. Bill and Kevin dig deep into the idea of working backwards. It starts with leaders being customer-obsessed, finding out what they want/need and work backward. This isn't as easy as it sounds. We meet with lots of folks each day, many of whom are not our customers. So, we need to go out of our way to think about the customer. Bill also shares the four characteristics that help define the company culture and how this applies to leaders at any level. This episode is brought to you by… From Manager to Remarkable Leader, Kevin's Flagship workshop based on his proven leadership model. Get a Vision and Live It with Larry Olsen
Do you have to? or Do you want to? We all have a choice. Larry Olsen is the author of Get a Vision and Live It. He joins Kevin to discuss how people can learn to change their attitudes to align with their visions. Our brain makes decisions based on the past, not what the future holds; our growth is limited. We can't change the past, but we can envision what we want our reality to be. You get what you think about. Prosperity is the here and now. It is the version that is ready for the moment about to happen. It is not based on the past, which can lead to disengagement or cynicism. Larry believes you are where you need to be to make great things happen. This episode is brought to you by… Unleashing Your Remarkable Potential, Kevin's free weekly e-newsletter. Saying No with Love - Thoughts from Kevin
The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say no to almost everything. You've gotta keep control of your time, and you can't unless you say no. You can't let people set your agenda in life. – Warren Buffett Now who am I to argue with Warren Buffett? I completely agree that we must be protective of our time and that how we spend our time is directly correlated to our success. And yet…I am not advocating that we immediately say NO to everything. It's important to use judgement always in our decisions. And that when we do say no, we say it with love. Tweet it out: To achieve our goals sometimes we must say no – but we can say no in a way that preserves relationships and future opportunities – that's saying no with love. @KevinEikenberry From This Episode: Get a short, inspirational email tip every Monday – Friday by signing up for Kevin's Daily Email here.

Connecting with Others Through Listening with Ximena Vengoechea
Ernest Hemingway said, "When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen." Ximena Vengoechea thinks Ernest may be on to something. She is the author of Listen Like You Mean It: Reclaiming the Lost Art of True Connection. As a user researcher, she understands the importance of listening for understanding. This is true for product research and organizational success. Often, we find ourselves default listening. We are sort of paying attention, yet we don't get the true experience or the emotions of the talker. Ximena tells Kevin we need to move to empathetic listening, which starts with the intention to listen. A listening mindset begins with humility, curiosity, and empathy. When we bring this to the table, not only are we better people, but we are also better leaders. This episode is brought to you by… From Manager to Remarkable Leader, Kevin's Flagship workshop based on his proven leadership model. Don't Forget Your Phone - Thoughts from Kevin
When I was growing up, most households only had one phone and it was usually in the kitchen. And teens spent alllll the time on that phone. Today's teens also spend a lot of time on the phone, as do most of us. These tiny devices consume so much of our time and attention, although we rarely use them anymore for what they were originally designed for – to TALK on them. And today, I'm reminding you of all of the reasons and benefits why the next time you pick up your phone, it should be to talk into it. They join Kevin to discuss the importance of building exceptional relationships or at least moving along the continuum. There is a risk of being vulnerable. I recently received an email from the Principal of the High School that I attended, asking if I would help with a project.
