CC023: The Historical Case for the Resurrection of Jesus (Part 1 of 5)

Did you know that Christianity is true? No, I mean like it’s actually true. It’s not just something that people believe. You know, I say that a lot, but today on the podcast we’re going to prove that. The next five episodes feature a discussion between myself, Dr. Calum Miller, and Dr. Max Baker-Hytch on the historical case for the Resurrection of Jesus. Dr. Miller has been on the podcast before. He and I discussed the prior probability of the Resurrection. Super interesting exchange of ideas on that one, please go give it a listen if you haven’t. Dr. Miller graduated from the University of Oxford in 2015 with degrees in Medical Sciences (Neuroscience) and Medicine & Surgery. He’s currently teaching Ethics and Philosophy of Religion at the University of Oxford. Dr. Baker-Hytch is actually new to the show. In 2010 he received his Masters in Ethics, Religion and Society from the University of Exeter and later went on to receive a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Oxford. Both of these guys are extremely intelligent and also well-versed in the evidence for the Resurrection. In Part 5 we talk about a book they’ve written together on the subject. My producer, Sawyer Hudson, was telling me that this was his favorite podcast series we’ve done so far. I’m so stoked for you guys to hear it. I pray that it encourages and edifies. CC022: A New Cumulative Case for God's Existence

I was browsing Facebook the other day (as I often do) and came across a paper that looked really interesting. It was titled: "From a Cosmic Fine-Tuner to a Perfect Being." That caught my attention immediately because Fine-Tuning Arguments have traditionally been thought of as to only get us to a cosmic designer, not all the way to God (classically conceived). After reading the paper, I found it so interesting that I contacted the author, Justin Mooney, and invited him on for an interview. This podcast episode is the result! CC021: If God Does Not Exist, Why Be a Moral Person?

In this episode, I interview Dr. Anne Jeffrey on whether we'd have any reason to do what's morally right if God did not exist. Difficulty: Advanced | This podcast is philosophically challenging Website: https://capturingchristianity.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/capturingchristianity

CC020: Dealing with Doubt with Dr. Bobby Conway

The 20th episode of the podcast is all about dealing with doubt. Is doubt a sin? How can people with a public platform deal with doubt? What does the Bible say about doubt? Dr. Bobby Conway, author of Doubting Toward Faith, joins us to discuss these questions and more. Website: www.capturingchristianity.com Patreon: www.patreon.com/capturingchristianity

CC019: The Prior Probability of the Resurrection with Dr. Calum Miller (Part 2)

In episode 19, Dr. Calum Miller and I complete our discussion of the Prior Probability of the Resurrection. Episode 18 laid a lot of groundwork for 19. Go listen to it if you haven't! In episode 19, we get a real understanding of what it takes to form an accurate prior probability for Jesus' Resurrection. We address several objections like, "dead people tend to stay dead, so in all likelihood, Jesus stayed dead too, " "miracles almost never happen, so the Resurrection probably didn’t happen," and "any naturalistic theory is going to be more probable than God raising Jesus from the dead." All are shown to be lacking. Toward the end we address some of the concerns that historians like Mike Licona have against using Bayes Theorem in historical arguments. CC018: The Prior Probability of the Resurrection with Dr. Calum Miller (Part 1)

Over the next two episodes, Dr. Calum Miller and I discuss the Prior Probability of the Resurrection. "What the heck is that?" you might be asking yourself. Skeptical arguments against the resurrection of Jesus, for example, the objection that dead people usually stay dead or that miracles never happen, are really arguments that Jesus’ resurrection is supremely unlikely before we look at any of the evidence. Episodes 18 and 19 take these objections to task. Is Jesus' Resurrection all that unlikely before we look at any evidence? CC017: Exploring the Contingency Argument with Dr. Josh Rasmussen (Part 4)

We’ve come to the end. Not the end of Capturing Christianity, but to the end of our 4-part series on the contingency argument. As mentioned, we’re wrapping up our 4-part series on the argument from contingency which in my mind is the strongest argument for God’s existence. Please go back and listen to the previous 3 parts. Don’t start at this one. It’s not going to make any sense. The argument from contingency has two stages. Stage 1 is about establishing that a necessary being exists, and Stage 2 argues that this necessary being is God. In this episode we wrap up our discussion of Stage 2, that the necessary foundation of reality is God. It’s not the universe, it’s God. In this episode we discuss the problem of evil and its impact on Josh's perfect being hypothesis. Website: www.capturingchristianity.com Patreon: www.patreon.com/capturingchristianity

CC016: Exploring the Contingency Argument with Dr. Josh Rasmussen (Part 3)

After we finished recording this 4-part series, I had the sense that this was going to be one of the most important things we’ve ever done. Actually, I had that sense before we even recorded. We’re in the middle of a 4-part series on the argument from contingency. It’s the absolute best argument for God’s existence. Well at least in the mind of one lowly photographer. I really like it. Makes a lot of sense, I know of very few good objections to it. Each episode I mention that the contingency argument is split into two stages. Stage 1 is about establishing that a necessary being exists, while Stage 2 argues that this necessary being is God. The previous two episodes, 14 and 15, were devoted to Stage 1, and now we’re beginning our discussion of Stage 2. Sometimes Stage 2 is referred to as the “Gap Problem” in the literature. This conversation blew my mind in all sorts of ways. I’m sure you’ll know what I mean when we get there. Here is part 3 of our series on the argument from contingency, Stage 2 with Dr. Josh Rasmussen. CC015: Exploring the Contingency Argument with Dr. Josh Rasmussen (Part 2)

In Part 2 of our series on the contingency argument, Dr. Rasmussen and I discuss various objections to principles of explanation. This is a continuation of our discussion of Stage 1. The next two episodes move on to discussing Stage 2. Make sure to listen to episode 14 before this one! CC014: Exploring the Contingency Argument with Dr. Josh Rasmussen (Part 1)

The argument from contingency is my favorite argument for God’s existence. Hands down. And to kick this series off, which is actually our first 4-parter, I’ve invited Dr. Josh Rasmussen. He is the foremost expert in the world on this argument. Over the past year that we’ve been corresponding, he’s also grown to be a great friend and mentor. I can’t say enough about him. If I were still charismatic, I would say that I know in my heart of hearts (ie: my "knower") that this series will stand as some of the most important content we'll ever produce. It's that good! If you've ever doubted God's existence, this series is for you.
