Jonathan Hanson is a freelance photographer based in Baltimore, MD. His passion for culture, exploration and storytelling inspired him to leave his Midwestern roots for the East coast. The Candid Frame #173 - Tom Carter
Travel photographer Tom Carter (1973) was born and raised in the City of San Francisco and graduated with a degree in Political Science from the American University in Washington, D.C. Following a political career with a number of high-profile state and national campaigns, Tom decided to "peek over the fence" and subsequently spent 18 months backpacking down the length of Mexico, Cuba and Central America. Tom later spent one year in Japan, one year in India, and four years in the People's Republic of China, traveling extensively throughout the country's 33 provinces and autonomous regions. The result was his first book, CHINA: Portrait of a People, hailed as the most comprehensive book of photography on modern China ever published by a single author.

The Candid Frame #172 - Winifred Whitfield
Winifred Whitfield has embraced a rich and varied life. After receiving Masters Degrees in Urban and Regional Planning and Social Work she became a Vice President on Wall Street. Seeking a different life style, she moved from New York to the Northwest, purchased a little farm and thrived – though she continued to provide financial services to client.
She took a photography class when she needed photos of her llamas for her website and fell in love with this artistic expression. Her expertise grew quickly, competing successfully international print competitions. She judged print competitions at the international level and taught Master Classes. After several years as a classic portrait photographer Winifred has become a passionate digital painter, with painting expertise in Corel Painter and Photoshop.
She is an educator, with an online store offering personalized painting workshops, “Almost One To One” and portrait painting tutorials, in addition to more than 50 painting tutorials on YouTube. She has received the Accolade of Lifetime Achievement from Wedding and Portrait Photographers International, the highest level of achievement granted by that organization, a Kodak Gallery Award, and a Perfect Print Award amongst others. Her expertise is primarily in portrait painting, commissioned by her clients, but she enjoys fine art painting as well.
Though Winifred sold her farm 2 years ago, she continues to own and operate Winifred’s Portrait & Fine Art Gallery near Seattle, Washington.

The Candid Frame #171 - Dean West
Dean West, “one of the world’s best emerging photographers” (AFTER CAPTURE MAGAZINE), has a highly conceptual and thought-provoking style of contemporary portraiture. His body of work has been featured in top photography magazines, art galleries, and received numerous international awards.
Born in small-town rural Australia in 1983, Dean’s love for photography began in his high school’s darkroom- one of the largest darkrooms in the country at the time- and blossomed at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia.
After graduating in 2007 with a Bachelor of Photography with majors in visual culture and advertising, Dean formed a partnership, Berg+West, which won nationwide acclaim as a high-end photography and post-production studio. Through clients like the QLD Government and SONY, Dean quickly learned to transform stick figure sketches into intricate composited photographs with immense detail and clarity.
In 2008, Dean was included in Saatchi & Saatchi’s collection of the world’s top 100 emerging photographers and went on to win Advertising Photographer of the Year at the International Aperture Awards. With success in advertising and a growing list of collectors- Dean decided to dedicate more of his time to the world of art.
In the following years, his series ‘Fabricate’ received worldwide recognition from top photography competitions, including: the International Colour Awards, the Lucie Awards, the Loupe Awards, and in 2009, Dean was the winner of the IV International Arte Laguna Prize, Venice, Italy. This final award being the most prestigious for emerging artists with over 5,000 applicants gunning for the top prize in
photography, sculpture and painting. Zoom Magazine quickly nominated Dean in the ‘New Talent’ issue of 2010 and the Magenta Foundation awarded Dean an emerging Photographer of Canada.
Dean’s body of work is now being collected by a growing number of sophisticated art collectors in Australia, Italy, and Canada.

The Candid Frame #170 - Colby Brown
Colby Brown is a professional photographer, photo educator and author based out of Denver, Colorado. He specializes in landscape, travel and humanitarian photography. Throughout his work one can see that he combines his love of the natural world with his fascination of the world’s diverse cultures. Each of his photographs tells a story of life on this planet.
While specializing in landscape and travel photography, Colby Brown, also does freelance photojournalism and donates his time to many Non Profit organizations while out in the field. He is a citizen of both the US and Canada, a certified PADI Master Diver and Wilderness First Responder. He has worked as a photography instructor for National Geographic Student Expeditions and is currently focusing much of his time and energy on Humanitarian efforts around the globe.

The Candid Frame #169 - Michele Zack
Michele Zack has been a writer/journalist for 25+ years.
In 2011, she joined the The Huntington-USC Instititute on California and the West (ICW) as Senior Advisor, Local History and K-12 Outreach. ICW pairs a great research university (USC) with a great research library (The Huntington) for a number of projects in doctoral education, public outreach, and thematic and innovative investigations of Western History.
Her appointment followed years of work with ICW director Bill Deverell on three federal Teaching American History grants that provide professional development for k-12 history teachers.
Her book Altadena: Between Wilderness and City was recognized in 2005 for excellence by the American Association of State and Local History, and in 2006 she received the Donald Pflueger Award from the Historical Society of Southern California.
Currently, she's working on several new projects and writing for Altadenablog.In addition, she serves on the board of directors for Altadena Heritage.

David duChemin is a world & humanitarian assignment photographer, best-selling author, digital publisher, and international workshop leader whose nomadic and adventurous life fuels his fire to create and share. Her work has been honored with awards from the White House News Photographer’s Association, NPPA, and the Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW), a non-profit that educates the public about the work of female photojournalists, where she has served as Secretary and Vice President.
