The Candid Frame: Conversations on Photography

Ralph Gibson is a photographer whose high-contrast images are recognized for their exploration of the geometric forms and the human gesture. He apprenticed with Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank, but he has created his own singular vision which often moves beyond the traditions of documentary and portraiture. He has produced numerous books of his photography starting with his classic The Somnambulist, which have helped define his particular vision. It has also inspired many photographers to see books as the means by which they can control and further their own unique passion for photography. His recent book, Mono marks the photographer’s earliest explorations with digital photography after years of producing his signature body of work on film. Thomas Allen Harris, an award-winning Director, is the President of Chimpanzee Productions, a company dedicated to producing unique audio-visual experiences including feature length films, performances and multimedia productions. Chimpanzee’s innovative and acclaimed films - Through A Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People (2014), Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela (2005), E Minha Cara/That’s My Face (2001), VINTAGE – Families of Value (1995), - have received critical acclaim at international film festivals including Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, Frameline, FESPACO, Outfest, and Sithengi/Cape Town and have been broadcast on PBS, the Sundance Channel, ARTE, as well as CBC, Swedish broadcasting Network and New Zealand Television. Reviews of Harris’ work have appeared in The New York Times, Time Magazine, Jay Z’s Life and Times, Variety The Advocate, among others.  Harris' performance-based videos have been featured at prestigious museums including: the MoMA, Whitney Museum of American Art’s Biennial, Corcoran Gallery, Reina Sophia, the Long Beach Museum of Art and London Institute of the Arts. A graduate of Harvard College, Harris began his career producing for public television, where he was nominated for two Emmy Awards.  Since then, he has received numerous awards including an Africa Movie Academy Award, Fund for Santa Barbara Social Justice Award, Tribeca All Access Nelson Mandela Award, United States Artist Award, Guggenheim Fellowship, Rockefeller Fellowship, as well as CPB/PBS and Sundance Directors Fellowships.  Harris has taught and lectured widely on film and multimedia and has served on a number of juries, including: Tribeca Film Festival, Independent Spirit Awards, POV American Documentary, and Full Frame.  In 2009 Harris launched Digital Diaspora Family Reunion, an innovative transmedia project that combines film, photography, social media and oral histories in a live touring event. When photographer Wyatt Neumann was 8-years-old his mother gave him Kodachrome 110 camera and told him he could shoot as much as he wanted as long he paid for film and developing. He cut a lot of lawns and delivered a lot papers, eventually turning his new toy into a profession. Wyatt now shoots on a variety of formats ranging from his 120 Mamiya to his iPhone, and his work has been recognized and awarded internationally. Andi Schreiber is a fine art and documentary photographer.  A lifelong New Yorker, Andi was born in Brooklyn, raised on Long Island and currently lives in suburban Westchester County with her husband and sons.  In her prior life she was a photojournalist and also worked as a magazine and newspaper picture editor in New York City.  In 2013 Andi was a Critical Mass finalist and her photographs were recently exhibited at Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, Oregon.  Her work has been featured on the New York Times Lens Blog, Slate France, Feature Shoot and The Huffington Post. Patrick Joust lives in Baltimore with his wife Amy and his son Llewelyn. Born in Oroville, California, Patrick has gone back and forth between both coasts of the United States, before settling permanently in Baltimore in 2006 where he works as a reference librarian. He takes pictures whenever he can. The people and places of Baltimore have played a central role in his photography, influencing how and where he points his camera both within and outside the city limits. During the day he can often be found engaging Baltimore’s people on the streets, while at night he enjoys capturing urban/suburban landscapes and scenes. Jay Bartlett is a Los Angeles-based commercial photographer who has been shooting for over 10 years. A grass-roots photographer who in his early stages of his career pounded the pavement by cold calling and doing door to door advertising for new prospective clients.  He started out during his last year of his enlistment in the U.S. Airforce taking battlefield pictures while on active duty in Desert Shield. Honorably discharged, he then worked for a medical company honing his business skills for several years before he decided to go and launch his commercial photography business 5 years ago.  His attention to detail and his ability to create a positive client experience is why his current clients and the new continue to pursue his work. His lighting is very clean, technical. and distinctive to what we see in the commercial industry of images.   Today he fills his calendar by shooting environmental portraits and clothing for editorial, advertising, and fashion accounts and have worked for such illustrious commercial and corporate clients as Triumph Motorcycles, Harley Davidson, Home Shopping Network, and Margaritaville Apparel Group.
