TCF Ep. 413 - Nancy Lehrer

Nancy Lehrer is a computer scientist by profession, classical musician by history, and photographer by passion. "I set out to capture daily life and interactions. These life events are sometimes celebratory but more often commonplace. They are made up of simple scenes, conversations and actions. Concentrating on layers, color, and gesture I aim to weave a specific action in with its backdrop. I am an observer, seeking to find and record a bit of today’s culture and community." Nancy Lehrer, is an independent photographer based in Thousand Oaks, California and has been using photography to capture her unique world-view for most of her life. Nancy has studied photography from several American photography masters including Jay Maisel, Sam Abell, Gerd Ludwig, and Arthur Meyerson. She has received several local awards, and she lectures on photography in Los Angeles and Ventura County California.   Resources:   Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device. TCF Ep. 412 - Joel Meyerowitz

Joel Meyerowitz was born in the Bronx in 1938 into a neighborhood that offered daily lessons in the divine comedy and tragedies of human behavior. He believes it was that basic “street” education that nurtured his delight in human observation, a perception that is at the heart of his photography. After studying art, art history, and medical illustration at Ohio State University, he worked as an art director in advertising in the early 60’s. In 1962, Robert Frank made photographs for a booklet Meyerowitz designed, and it was while watching Frank work that he discovered that photographs could be made while both the photographer and the subject were in motion! The power of this observation made Meyerowitz quit his job immediately, borrow a camera, and go out onto the streets of New York. He has been on the streets ever since. Meyerowitz began by using color film, not knowing any better, nor aware that photographers of that era believed that black and white was the ‘art’ of photography. During his first days on the street, he met a young graphic designer, Tony Ray-Jones, who, like Meyerowitz, began using color as the most natural means of making photographs. Later that year Meyerowitz met, and became friends with, Garry Winogrand, and together they walked and worked Fifth Avenue daily for nearly five years. The work of Meyerowitz, who is a Guggenheim fellow and a recipient of both the NEA and NEH awards, has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. He was the only photographer to gain unrestricted access to Ground Zero after 9/11, which produced a body of work that led Meyerowitz to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale for Architecture in 2002. His work is in the collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Art Institute of Chicago, and many others worldwide. Meyerowitz lives and works in New York and in Italy.   Resources: Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device. Click here to download for . TCF Ep. 411 - John Keatley

John Keatley often self-characterizes his work as a reflection of himself, rather than the individual he is photographing. In recent years, his journey of self-discovery has brought clarity to emotions that have always been present yet were previously unknown. Anxiety. Fear. Isolation. Not Being In Control. Keatley capitalizes on the correlation between these emotions and humor. It is a fine line, sitting in the pain of the emotion and understanding that pain can also be humorous. Yet John beautifully executes this dichotomy in his work, as the viewer is invited to stay a moment longer and ponder the unexpected. TCF Ep. 409 - Jeffery Saddoris

Jeffery Saddoris is endlessly curious – about people, about creativity, about line and shape and color – and his personal and professional pursuits are driven by learning, discovering, imagining, listening, celebrating, and making. Years of practicing and teaching photography led Jeffery to realize that few people were talking about the why of creativity – the motivations and inspirations that fuel the work of photographers and other visual artists. He began the website as a way to showcase photographers’ creative inspiration through editorials, in-depth Spotlights, and a podcast series of one-on-one interviews. One of Jeffery’s interviews was with New York-based portrait photographer , who later invited Jeffery to become the co-host for his new weekly podcast . Jeffery often refers to himself as a “serial conversationalist” and podcasting has become an increasingly important platform for his lifelong interest in learning, exploring, communicating, and sharing about art and artists – between more than 5 years talking about photography on , hosting the 12-episode , and , his ongoing podcast of long-form conversations about creativity and how the creative process manifests itself across a wide range of genres and disciplines.   Resources: Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device.
