Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation are two words thrown a lot in the world of mental health. But the question is, how are they different? Simply put, meditation is focusing on nothing and mindfulness is focusing on something (that's an oversimplification, but it's a good start) Studies have shown that both mindfulness and meditation can lower stress, and even help your sleep (did we mention it's free?)! On today's episode of the Building Resilience podcast, we discuss how to practice meditation and mindfulness, the benefits, and the science! As always, don't forget to find us on our website and join our Facebook group. The Four Tendencies

This is an exciting episode for us, because it was based on a book that we refer to all the time—it can make such a big difference in understanding and dealing with relationships of all kinds: with your partner, your kids, your friends, your neighbors...pretty much anyone you meet! The book is The Four Tendencies, by Gretchen Rubin, the author of the well-known book, The Happiness Project. She spent years studying happiness and habits. She found that different strategies were working for different people: some are morning people, some are night people. Some do better when they abstain from things, others do better in moderation. She was curious as to why certain people do certain things, which led her to create this book! This week, we explore the four tendencies. Which tendency do you have? What about the people in your life? And how can knowing that information change how you interact with them?As always, don't forget to find us on our website and join our Facebook group. Languishing

Since 2020 rolled around, there has been a lot of talk about the concept of "languishing". If you haven't heard about it before, it's a state where you're tired and overwhelmed, but you kind of want to do things. You're lacking energy, enthusiasm, and motivation. You're not completely depressed because you do believe that things will eventually get better. "Languishing" was coined by Dr. Corey Keys. It's not depression, but it's the absence and insufficiency of feeling good and functioning well. He said it's when you experience an absence of the good stuff, purpose, belonging, contribution, satisfaction, and interest in life. This absence can feel like a real piercing void in your day to day life. Today, we talk about how to recognize languishing in your own mind, and what strategies you can use to live with it.As always, don't forget to find us on our website and join our Facebook group. The Brain & Gut Connection with Hollie Crome

Since experts have been establishing such strong connections between the gut and the brain, it makes sense we wanted to have today's guest on our show! We're lucky enough to be joined by Hollie Chrome of Hollie Chrome Holistic Wellness. Hollie specializes in supporting women in feeling empowered about their Health and Wellness through creating and achieving their own unique Wellness Vision. Hollie works with many women who have felt like they were never successful in achieving their health goals, like they were in a continual cycle of starting over with their health and who felt like factors such as stress, lack of support and lack of nutritional knowledge were barriers to their success in achieving their definition of optimal health. Hollie’s work is served by a strong foundation in the Mind-Body connection, and how this connection is critical to success in optimal and functional health. Hollie is a mother of 3 and when she isn’t empowering women to finally achieve their Wellness Vision, she is sewing, hiking and creating healthy low-sugar treats. We need to nourish our minds through mindset practices, which we talk about all the time, but in addition, we need to nourish our bodies through nutrition and movement. Studies are being done on the gut-brain connection but it is still a relatively unknown topic. Even scientists and researchers do not fully understand the connection between them, but they have established that there is a very strong, scientific connection between our brains and our thought processes and what happens in the gut and vice versa. Today, Hollie is going to go over what is known about the gut-brain connection. How can we improve our gut health? What do we do that's damaging our gut health? And what can looking after our gut do for our mind? Find out on today's episode! As always, don't forget to find us on our website and join our Facebook group. Make sure to follow Hollie on Instagram and TikTok, as well as visit her website. Overwhelm

We've all felt overwhelmed before when we have a lot going on at once in our lives. Thoughts like "I'll never get this done" and "I don't have time to do this" get stuck in our minds. These thoughts create a storm of irritation, frustration, and other emotions, which create the situation of overwhelm. Fortunately, overwhelm isn't something that happens to us—it's a state that we actually create with our thoughts, because our thoughts create our feelings. Even though it can be so unhelpful, we're doing it to ourselves! This week, we discuss where overwhelm comes from, some strategies on how to tackle it, and how doing things imperfectly might just save us. Stress and Mindset

Sometimes the word "stress" can be used to describe things that are going on inside of us, like our thoughts. Many times, we say our stress is caused by our family, work, school, health, commute, money, COVID (among many, many other things). But what if we were to tell you that your stress is actually caused by none of the above? These stressors are not the cause of your stress. And as long as you will continue to believe that these are causes of stress, we will continue to have the symptoms.Join us this week as we discuss stress—what is it, where does it come from, and how can you use it to your advantage? As always, don't forget to find us on our website and join our Facebook group.
