#3-12 - Ocean Warming, Ocean Currents, and Climate Models - ft. Prof. Dr. Jochem Marotzke

In this episode, Bea talks to Prof. Dr. Jochem Marotzke, a managing director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, about the role of the ocean in climate and climate change. Jochem does fundamental research into human-caused climate change and researches the role that the ocean plays in climate and how it interacts with the atmosphere. Here, he explains how the ocean slows down the climate change by acting as a carbon sink and what consequences this has for the ocean. Jochem describes the main reasons behind the global rise of sea level and talks about a handful of places where, locally, the fall in the sea level can be observed. He also talks about El Niño (a climate pattern of unusual warming of surface waters) and fluctuations in the global atmospheric temperature. [A correction to what was said on El Nino and global temperature: The globally warmest year, 2016, followed the large El Nino of 2015/16. The second warmest year was 2020, not 2018, and there was no El Nino prior to that, which made 2020 all the more remarkable. Jochem said 2018 which should have been 2020.] Bea and Jochem talk about climate change models and how they can be used to make statements and forecasts about the future. Jochem explains how we can discern the influence of humans on the temperature rise and how this discovery led to a Nobel Prise and the Paris Agreement. #3-09 - Clouds, Atmosphere, and Climate Change - ft. Prof. Dr. Bjorn Stevens

In this episode, Bea talks to Prof. Dr. Bjorn Stevens, managing director at Max Planck für Meteorologie and a director of The Atmosphere in the Earth System, about clouds and water vapour, and the effect they have on climate change. Bjorn talks about the reason why he decided to switch from electrical engineering to studying clouds and explains why clouds are relevant for climate change. He talks about greenhouse gases and describes what role different types of clouds play in the greenhouse effect and in controlling the temperature, as well as how the temperature, in turn, impacts cloud formation. Bjorn explains absolute and relative humidity, the double-sided effects of air pollution, and factors that influence the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere. Bjorn and Bea also discuss approaches to modelling climate change and the reliability of climate change models. #3-08 - Kitchen Lab - ft. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Markus Antonietti

In this episode, Bea talks to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Markus Antonietti, a director of Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, about his kitchen lab and the projects that are carried out within it. Markus tells the history of the kitchen lab, from its conception as a teaching tool for children to its current form as a research space, where kitchen utensils and cooking techniques can be used for chemical processes, and why this is a way toward more sustainable and practical chemistry. Markus talks about the setup of the kitchen lab and describes a number of projects that have been carried out within it as well as some that are still ongoing, including creating a circular economy of wood, the extraction of resveratrol in the kitchen environment as a replacement for BPA, encapsulation processes of perfume and oils for cosmetics, and improving the texture of vegan burgers. Markus highlights the numerous advantages as well as some limitations that his kitchen lab has and explains how it fits into the Max Planck Research Community. #3-06 - Effect of Sunlight and Sleep on our Circadian Rhythm - ft. Prof. Satchin Panda

In this episode, Bea talks to Professor Satchin Panda, from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, about circadian rhythm and its connection to light and sleep. Satchin gives an introduction to circadian rhythm, a mechanism that allows us to stay at our optimal physical and intellectual health during the day, as well as to repair and rejuvenate in the night. He emphasises the numerous health problems, short- and long-term, that can be caused by disrupting one’s circadian rhythm but also highlights the ways, in which we can take control back. Satchin talks about the role of light, specifically bright blue light, in resetting the circadian rhythm and the discovery of melanopsin, retina sensor that sends the information about the light to a master clock in our brain. Bea and Satchin also discuss how red light might help us to fall asleep, why the role of melatonin in sleep seems to be overestimated, and the role of “sleep debt” in our lives. #3-05 - Sustainable Farming from a Farmer's Perspective - ft. Chiel van Dijk

Farmers feed us and feed the world. In the current agricultural society, it is crucial to understand how farming can be more sustainable in terms of energy input/output and agroforestry (the use of land, in which trees and shrubs are intentionally integrated into crop and animal farming systems) offers a number of environmental, economic, and social benefits. In this episode, Srinath and Leonie talk to Chiel van Dijk, owner of the Frecklinghof farm in the North of Germany. They talk about what sustainability means for a farm, whether there is such a thing as more or less sustainable, how Frecklinghof came to be, and how Chiel measures the energy output and input of his farm. Chiel talks about Agroforestry, the way it is implemented on his farm in particular, and the advantages and challenges it can bring to farming in general. Chiel emphasises the importance of small farms as the feeders of people, distinguishing them from the large farms that tend to be geared towards animal feed. #3-04 - Antibiotic Resistance - ft. Prof. Hinrich Schulenburg

In this episode, Bea talks to Prof. Dr. Hinrich Schulenburg, a Max Planck fellow of the Max Planck Society and professor at the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel (CAU), about antibiotics resistance. Prof. Schulenburg’s research focuses of the evolution of host-microbe interactions, as well as understanding the evolution of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria develop resistance against antibiotics designed to kill them. Antibiotic resistance has been developing globally, endangering the efficacy of antibiotics. Here, Hinrich gives a thorough introduction to antibiotic resistance. He defines what exactly antibiotics are, what they do, and why antibiotic-resistant bacteria are extremely dangerous. He explains the mechanisms via which antibiotic resistance arises, why resistance to antibiotics has become a worldwide epidemic, and, most importantly, what some ways that we might try to stop and maybe even reverse its spread are.
