EP226 - Perfect Starts? - Just start where you are, with what you have
The idea of “starting where you are, with what you have” is a powerful reminder that you don't need to wait for the perfect bird, or the perfect conditions, or have everything figured out before taking action towards creating your strain. The key is to begin with the birds and resources, skills and opportunities available to you right now. Instead of waiting for everything to align perfectly, just take that first step, however small it may seem. There is an old saying, “You learn your fowl by breeding them, and you learn your strain while you create them.” The learning process and your skills will improve as you go, and each generation will bring you closer to your ideal strain. So, embrace the journey, embrace the process, and start right where you are, right now. Make sure to follow and watch our future shows. We plan to dive deep into the world of breeding and genetics, nutrition and health management, and provide essential tips, so you too can create high quality strains. Whether you're breeding domestic chickens, gamefowl, or various types of livestock, this show is for you. EP225 - The Detriments of Defects
In this episode, we will discuss the consequences of breeding birds that have known faults. We will answer the question, “Can we create a strain with birds expressing defects and faults?” And, what are the often-underestimated determinants that defects can have on our strains? While the practice of selective breeding has improved in the last hundred years, it's essential to acknowledge that there are many breeders who are still perpetuating faults that may someday have a detrimental effect on the breed as a whole. As breeders, we must understand that it’s our responsibility to practice sound breeding practices, and move towards perfection, while preserving the breed. Join us as we discuss the pros and cons of this practice, and hopefully give you better insight on ways to breed and create better strains. Make sure to follow and watch our future shows. EP224 - The Pain of Regret - Breeders Beware!
Buyers Regret vs Sellers Regret: What determines a good sell vs a bad sell - What determines a good buy vs a poor buying decision. We’ve all experienced the pain of regret. We try to do everything possible to avoid this feeling, but we still find ourselves in situations where we wished that we would have done our homework, or more research before purchasing an item, in this case a bird. Well, this is true for the seller as well. There are times when we sell birds that we wished we would have held onto, and this could be for various reasons. We see this everywhere, and it includes the buying and selling of chickens too. We buy birds that turn out to be sick, defective, or just don’t represent their breed. Or we sell birds that we could have used to improve our own strains. In this episode, we will discuss the pros and cons of selling and buying chickens. Hopefully, this will help you in making better decisions in the future. Make sure to follow and watch our future shows. EP223 - Infuse to Improve? Not So Fast!
Can Conformation and Performance Ability be Improved by Infusing New Blood? There is a big difference between a true breeder and a wannabe breeder. What’s the difference? It comes down to science vs speculation. Although speculation produces favorable results, from time to time, science produces the same results, without fail, every time. Science is right, but only succeeds if breeders are willing to accept it and use it. The problem is, most would rather avoid the science. They feel it’s too difficult to learn and use, and so they discard it as useless and irrelevant. If they only knew that this kind of thinking is holding them back, and that by embracing the science, they would save so much time and money, and they would get the results they were looking for. One of the biggest falsehoods is the idea that you can fix a trait by adding or infusing new, outside blood. Or the idea that you can infuse outside blood to refresh and strengthen a weak family. Crossbreeding to introduce new traits, and infusion to refresh a weak strain has become standard practice with most modern day breeders. The problem is, it’s a practice that doesn’t really work as advertised. Also, many believe that traits can be improved through infusion or crossbreeding, such as conformation of body and performance ability. These are two traits that cannot be improved by adding or infusing new blood. These traits require a different type of selection and breeding practice to improve, and adding outside blood is the wrong approach. It’s our hope that we can change your perception about the science of breeding, and encourage you to change your practice as well. You are only going to improve your breeding, when you can accept the science. Make sure to follow and watch our future shows. EP222 - BREEDING MOTHER NATURES WAY
Why It’s Good To Stay As Close To Mother Nature As Possible. Breeding like Mother Nature involves doing things that simulate what Mother Nature does in the wild. This includes breeding and selection, culling the weak, allowing the right organisms to reproduce and evolve, while preserving their natural instincts, and adapting to their environmental factors. By following Mothers Nature's Way, it allows us to create healthy, well-bred strains that can last many generations. It allows us to actually sculpt and mold our birds into the forms and functions that we desire, and create fowl that can perform the task for which they were bred. We see the opposite of this when breeders fight or work against Mother Nature. Yes, the contrast is huge. Whether you're breeding domestic chickens, gamefowl, or various types of livestock, this show is for you. Make sure to follow and watch our future shows.
