Dunsany lived much of his life in what may be Ireland's longest-inhabited house, Dunsany Castle. He was the chess and pistol-shooting champion of Ireland and during the 1910s was considered one of the greatest living writers of the English-speaking word.Writers who were influenced by Dunsany include, Arthur C. Clarke, H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, Jorge Luis Borges, C. M. Kornbluth, Margaret St. Clair and many more.Published in 1955 today’s story is one of his last, appearing in the April 1955 issue of Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine when he was 77.
