#169 Al Rumjen (King Prawn)

What do you get if you combine Rage Against The Machine with The Specials and Public Enemy? King Prawn, aka the very best of all the UK ska punk bands to emerge around the turn of the Millennium. This week's guest is Al Rumjen, frontman in King Prawn, and former vocalist in the Asian Dub Foundation. Al joins Matt for a pre-COVID sit down, back when Brexit was the main topic on everyone's minds, to discuss racism, nationalism, prejudice, heritage, and, of course, the history of King Prawn.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ Hosted on Acast. #168 Jesse Leach Interviews Matt Stocks

And now for something completely different. A couple of weeks back, I got a message from my good friend Jesse Leach. He had a novel idea: that he come on Life In The Stocks, and not as a guest, but rather the host, and interview me for a change. So we switched roles. And this is the resulting conversation. I had an absolute ball recording it (apologies for the poor sound quality - I'm still figuring out these remote recording methods), and I hope you enjoy listening to it. Thank you so much to Jesse for suggesting we do this, being interested enough to do it, and for taking the time out for little old me. Consider me humbled, in the best possible way.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ Hosted on Acast. #167 Janey Starling (Dream Nails)

Dream Nails are Matt's favourite new UK punk band, and their singer Janey Starling has been someone he wanted on the podcast for a while. She's smart, informed, outspoken, engaging, passionate, funny, articulate - and one hell of a front woman. Dream Nails also happen to be one of the most exciting and important upcoming UK bands around. And with a lot going on in the world right now, it seemed like the perfect time to get Janey on the show. Unsurprisingly, we had an awful lot to talk about, too. Hopefully you enjoy, and take lots of interesting and positive things away from the conversation. Keep an eye out for the debut self-titled album by Dream Nails, coming later this year.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ Hosted on Acast. #166 Jake Szufnarowski (Rocks Off)

Usually, when we put out episodes that are longer than 90 minutes, we split them into two parts, but we've decided to keep this one whole so you can get swept up and lost in the conversation. It's a DEEP one this week. And things get a little intense at times. But then that's what we do here on Life In The Stocks, and we hope anyone that's previously struggled or currently struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts will take something positive and inspirational away from hearing Jake's story.Jake is one of Matt's dearest friends, and in the words of Hunter S. Thompson, is "one of God's own prototypes: too weird to live and too rare to die." This already ranks as an all-time favourite episode. There's tales from Warped Tour '97, the final days of CBGB, partying with Kid Rock, and Jake's mental breakdown, suicide attempt, and the long, hard, ultimately rewarding road to recovery. There is something for everyone in here.Be sure to buy yourself a protective mask from Jake's insane array of designs, too. They're guaranteed to put a smile on your face - not to mention the faces of people you pass in the street. Jake also has some amazing Tiger King t-shirts for sale, too.Web link here: https://rocksoffthreads.threadless.com/Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ Hosted on Acast. #165 Tyson Cornell (Rare Bird)

Matt's new boss Tyson Cornell is this week's guest on Life In The Stocks. Tyson is the head of Rare Bird, an LA-based publishing company that's releasing Matt's first book, LIFE IN THE STOCKS: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives, in September. So Matt wanted to take this opportunity to invite Tyson on to the show to talk to him about his personal and professional journey, from hardcore basement shows and DIY punk tours to his time working at the legendary LA bookstore Book Soup, the formation of Rare Bird, and the array of amazing writers and artists Tyson has worked with over the years.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ Hosted on Acast. #164 Vinnie Stigma (Agnostic Front)

This week's guest is one of the funniest, most charismatic humans on the planet. He's an institution out of the city of New York. He's one of the last outlaws; the last of a dying breed. He is the man, the myth, the legend, Mr Vinnie Stigma - from the Godfathers of Hardcore, Agnostic Front. He joins Matt for a pre-Corona virus, pre-social distancing chat about New York history, hardcore and CBGB. Vinnie also reveals his wide range of unlikely creative influences, from Jimi Hendrix and Frank Sinatra all the way to Bruce Lee, discusses his relationship and creative partnership with AF frontman Roger Miret, and shares his thoughts on everything from pigeons to the mafia. It's a thoroughly entertaining talk with one of the most original characters in rock 'n' roll. Buckle up, and enjoy the ride.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ Hosted on Acast. #163 Chris No. 2 (Anti-Flag)

This week's episode of Life In The Stocks features Chris No. 2 from Anti-Flag. Despite touring together in the past, this was actually the first time that Matt and No. 2 sat down and had a proper conversation together, and it was well and truly worth the wait. What you're about to hear is deep, intense, life affirming, vulnerable and honest conversation that goes to some pretty difficult and at times dark places, but always comes back to the light and a tone of optimism and hope, because that's the kind of guy Chris is. You are going to love this episode. And we hope, if you've also been affected by some of the issues raised here, that you find some form of respite and comfort in No. 2's story.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ Hosted on Acast. #162 Chris DeMakes (Less Than Jake)

Roger from Less Than Jake guested on Life In The Stocks way back in May 2017, and now, three years later, it's the turn of Chris DeMakes. Talking points include tour stories, partying with fellow bands, the Gainesville punk scene, Less Than Jake's trademark sound, their secret to success and longevity, the recent line-up shift, and that time they opened up for Bon Jovi on an arena tour across the States.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ Hosted on Acast. #161 Thomas Ian Nicholas (Actor/Musician)

We're back in business after a couple of weeks sabbatical and we're hitting the ground running with an epic-hour part podcast featuring Matt's old friend Thomas Ian Nicholas. Thomas is perhaps best known for his role as Kevin Myers in the American Pie film franchise and has appeared in an array of great movies over the years. We discuss everything from his breakthrough role in Rookie Of The Year to his latest role in Adverse, which Thomas also produced, alongside Matt's acting hero Mickey Rourke. Thomas also talks about what it was like acting opposite Tarantino's to-go-guy Michael Madsen, how he almost got into a fight with Matthew McConaughey, the American Pie films and their varying degrees of success, working with Roger Avary - who co-wrote Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino - on The Rules of Attraction, playing Frank Sinatra Jr and acting opposite William H. Macy in Stealing Sinatra, Thomas's music career and more.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows.www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMatt's first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones & Rare Bird Publishing.https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ Hosted on Acast.
