336. Jade Miles: What is a Sustainable Table and how do we drive a truly regenerative shift in farming

This show, I chat to Jade Miles, author, podcaster, regenerative heritage fruit farmer, homesteading workshop facilitator and CEO of Sustainable Table. A fellow poly-jobist! Today we ask the all-important question: What really is a sustainable table and how to we effect big, systemic change when it comes to farming - from degenerative, to regenerative and truly sustainable? Jade has driven a catalytic change in direction at Sustainable Table from a once small scale Victorian based, education enterprise that connected eaters to their food and the growers who created it, to its current-day vision of transforming farming, food, and fibre systems through regenerative ways of being, doing and knowing. Grounded in care for people and planet, her team facilitates connection, collaboration, funding, and learning to catalyse change across Australia. “Every decision we make has an impact - on other humans, creatures and ecosystems. How do you make your decisions and will their impact be degenerative, sustainable or regenerative? Today’s show is a balm for those wanting a better way forward for our planet that doesn’t always have a corporate giant or billionaire behind it. I hope you love it and look forward to hearing what your ‘enough’ is as we discuss it towards the end of the show. Show notes here: https://www.lowtoxlife.com/podcast/Enjoy our sponsors Till the end of JUNE 2023: Earthtank, a gorgeous new handmade ceramic water filter on the scene, is carefully thought through and tested every step fo the way to provide delicious drinking water with minerals intact, and all the bad stuff out. 335. Alexx Stuart talks ADHD - her diagnosis, processing of it, thoughts on how society can do better and more.

This week’s show is just me - Alexx Stuart, founder of Low Tox Life and host of the Low Tox Life podcast that you’re listening to right now and I’m talking about ADHD and me - and you! I founded Low Tox Life back in 2009 because I wanted - for myself, family and friends a lifestyle where doing a little better than yesterday across food, body, home and mind - and of course care for our planet home and over the years it’s meant I’ve produced this show, written two books, spoke at countless events, written 10 e-courses to support people in their low tox goals and over 200 gluten-free recipes and 100 blogs on reducing toxin impact in our every day. Sheesh. “How can you have ADHD having achieved all that?” is something I often get asked and today might give you a window into it. Giving someone the gift of sticking to their passions, zone of genius and strengths allows for results to happen - it doesn’t happen often in the average workplace but when you work for yourself or a great boss you can! Today’s show isn’t all about the good bits though as there are many challenges, too. When I shared I’d had an ADHD diagnosis (combined-type) in January, naturally people in our low tox community had questions, and so in this show this week I share: Why I sought diagnosis / why I suspected itHow I felt about that and began to process itThe excellent aspects of what it revealedThe unfortunate and sad aspects of what it revealed as it played out in my life growing up and at work and in lifeHow much sweeter life is when you feel supported for who you areHow the world would benefit from recognising differences in people’s brains and the ways they produce great work, contribute and express themselves. The aspects or traits that are ‘modifyable’ vs fixed and how genetics plays a role as well as trauma, environmental toxins and head injury to name a few ‘cherries on top’What I’m doing to work with the challenges of ADHDThe answers to a bunch of community questions about ADHDAnd believe it or not - even more! It’s 90 mins and I did. Not. stop. Talking. I bring you: ADHD. Hehe IYKYK. Here are some of the health professionals and resources I mentioned in the show: Some work and definitions that may help by various Drs who focus on the condition: Dr Russell Barkley: https://www.russellbarkley.org/factsheets/WhatCausesADHD2017.pdfDr James Greenblatt https://www.psychiatryredefined.org/finally-focused-mineral-imbalances-adhd-part-ii/Dr Daniel Amen https://www.amenclinics.com/conditions/adhd-add/The magnesium complex I take that I mentioned https://au.iherb.com/pr/dr-sinatra-magnesium-broad-spectrum-complex-120-capsules/101150And the rest is best to chat to a practitioner about therapeutic doses and what you specifically might benefit from. Difference between actions of medications https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w44BXLATt5wFollow me at @lowtoxlife on Instagram and share any more questions about the topic or an AHA. Here’s to celebrating who we are, being celebrated for it, as well as supported for what we find challenging. Now wouldn’t that be a lovely world indeed? Alexx x Hosted on Acast. 334. Exploring Neuroinflammation and mental health, with Brendan Vermeire

Is there a challenge for you around mental health or neuro-inflammation right now or someone you know? Often there is a lot to unpack across the whole landscape of health contributors and negative impacts, before deciding where to start. In today’s show, I have my friend Brendan Vermeire back on the show to unpack neuroinflammation and mental health more deeply from the last time he was on the show (show #277) - Brendan is the proud owner and founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute for Functional Health and Fitness Practitioners and the creator of the Functional Mental Health Practitioner Certificate Course. He is also the founder of the Metabolic Solutions Research & Education Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to ‘changing the way the world views mental health’ through advancing the science of Mental Health Dysfunction. He is also the creator of The Mental M.A.P.™, a cutting-edge Lab Panel for Mental Health. I know you’ll enjoy this explorative conversation around some of the trickier aspects of diagnosing, treating and healing in the mental health and neuro-inflammation space and you can head to the show notes for more, or these handy links below: Show notes: lowtoxlife.com/podcastInstagram: @lowtoxlife Instagram: @the_holistic_savageResources page on Brendan’s websiteAnd the questions I asked along the way: Identifying and addressing physiological root causes can make facing psychological root causes, such as unresolved trauma, more manageable.Root cause investigation can be a trauma response - Let's unpack that. - Another one is "Are self limiting beliefs your root cause"?High Cortisol due to prolonged stress/trauma is linked to decreased brain volume - wow, can you talk us through that? Research suggested that inflammation can increase susceptibility to PTSD. And then you go on to say trauma itself may increase inflammation - so is it a case of 'which one came first?' in the individual?Mold and mycotox are a major etiological root cause for neurodegeneration/mental illness. And then a couple of philosophical questions... where is the line to dance between personal responsibility + a helping hand for optimal health?Who you are (label given say with a diagnosis) and how much of that can fluctuate/be worked on vs how much is really you in all your uniqueness? 332. Late Diagnosis ADHD: Jules Galloway & Alexx Stuart talk about their experiences so far.

This week I invite my friend and colleague Jules Galloway, naturopath & herbalist onto the show to discuss our journeys in late diagnosis ADHD this past year. We don’t have all the answers. There aren’t protocols we’re sharing or ways of ‘getting rid of the symptoms’ but it’s an exploration of why we both chose to get diagnosed, some of the things we’ve been exploring, thinking and feeling as we’ve looked back at our lives, and where we’ve arrived in places - also admitting there’s still so much to unpack. I will also record a personal show in a couple of weeks with audience questions that have come from Instagram and that will come from the community once you’ve listened to this one. Jules and per husband James Galloway, also host a podcast called LD ADHD which you can go and explore. Please do get the support you need - life is much better when we know and accept ourselves and also feel empowered to change what we can for the better, through support, therapies and various other tools. Enjoy the show and head to the show notes for more details over at lowtoxlife.com/podcastFind more details on Peta’s work in the show notes at https://www.lowtoxlife.com/podcast/And if you share the show be sure to tag us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/lowtoxlife/ Sponsor offers: LOWTOXLIFE code for 10% off all Air Purifiers and dehumidifiers at https://www.ausclimate.com.au/LOWTOXLIFE15 code for 15% off the whole blue-blocking and light panel range at Block Blue Light: https://www.blockbluelight.com.au/?aff=12See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. 331. The Tiger Protocol to reverse disease with Dr. Akil Palanisamy

Perhaps the best doctors to usher us into the new integrative era of medicine and root cause approaches, are the conventional doctors for whom a health crisis occured and they realised the tools they had been given we’re enough. This is a pattern I’ve noticed in interviewing now hundreds of doctors over the years and Akil is one such person. In today’s show we discuss why the integrative approach is far superior to conventional when it comes to the chronic disease epidemics we’re seeing all ovewr the world and how the protocol he has researched and developed over the years in his practice combines the best of multiple disciplines to support people in losing weight, gaming energy and reversing disease. Dr. Akil Palanisamy is a Harvard-trained physician, integrative medicine expert and author of  The T.I.G.E.R. Protocol. Akil practices integrative medicine, blending his conventional medical expertise with holistic approaches including functional medicine and Ayurveda. Enjoy the show and head to the show notes for more details over at lowtoxlife.com/podcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. 328. Elliot Kallen: A Dad on a mission to prevent teen suicide.

Today we are looking at teen mental health and what we can all do to support our teens in life. Give we talk about what spurred it all on for Dad and Brighter Day Charity founder, Elliot Kallen, which was his son taking his own life, here are some numbers if you need support today:  Australia: Lifeline: 131314USA Crisis Text Line: text BRIGHTER to 741741USA OK2Talk Helpline Teen Helpline 1 (800) 273-TALKUK Youth Suicide Hotline Papyrus 0800 068 4141 or 07860039967 (9am - midnight) NZ Youthline 0800 37 66 33Canada: Talk Suicide Canada at 1-833-456-4566What no parent wants their story to be, told by Elliot, today’s show guest:  “Seven years ago, my son Jake, a sophomore at the University of Montana, walked up the highway and jumped in front of an oncoming truck, taking his life. In his suicide note, he wrote that he would have never told us how he felt or taken our help. We were devastated and shocked and have since learned that thousands of families had the same experience. None of his friends, family, or his coaches knew that he was struggling with depression. My name is Elliot Kallen, and I am the President and Founder of A Brighter Day Charity.  In honor of Jake, we began this charity six years ago by creating resources for teens and parents on stress and depression to stop teen suicide. We have now grown to become a charity that has impacted tens of thousands of families. Thousands are viewing our resources every month. We have established support programs and even offer college scholarships. Teen suicide has become a major problem in this country and is now the 2nd leading cause of death among teens. We are experts in teen depression and don’t want other parents to experience this devastation.  I will share ideas that will make a huge difference in the lives of teens and their parents.” Teen mental health is a real concern to many and it will take all of us to support our teens through these years.
