Show #116: Alexx shares the top 3 FAQs from the book tour and the top 5 low tox swaps you can make!
This week it's me chatting to you direct. No guest. I'm sharing the 3 most asked about topics from the book tour AND the 5 top recommendations I've made across the country in today's show if you're feeling a little lost or overwhelmed as to where to start or how to prioritise and not feel like you're never doing enough - that ain't allowed on my watch! Perfect for those newly embarked on their low tox way as well as curious to see if any old timers were surprised by what came up the most or what my top 5 were. I've just completed 42 Book tour events (I think in the show I said 29 - I physically just counted them in my diary and it was 42 - thank you to all who came!) and across those 42 events, I've insisted we take at least half an hour to take community questions and see what people are really feeling tricky, challenged by so that it's not just me talking AT people but we move forward and solve the big challenges in our community TOGETHER. Enjoy today's show and head to the show notes or club chat space to share your top swaps in this week's chat thread. Head to www.lowtoxlife/podcast for the show notes and sponsor offer details. Show #115: Maggie Dent on raising boys in today’s times
Maggie Dent is a well known voice of reason and comfort when it comes to raising all children, and especially boys. With 4 boys of her own all grown up now, and being a teacher in a boy's senior school she knows a thing or two about what makes boys tick, what helps us raise good, resilient men and how to nurture the feelings of boys, allowing them to express themselves, holding space for them, and supporting them through challenging times. In this chat we discuss the unique opportunities and challenges in raising (or educating if you're a teacher) boys, as well as her new book “Mothering Our Boys”. Maggie is so full of knowledge and love when it comes to boys and I do hope parents, coaching, tutors and teachers everywhere hear this chat and take the words of wisdom into their every day. As a parent of a boy myself I often find myself thinking “What would Maggie do?” in the, erm, more challenging times. Enjoy and don't forget to head to the show notes for this week's sponsor details, the giveaway and more information on how to connect further with Maggie's work and books, Alexx x www.lowtoxlife.com/podcast Here are the questions I asked Maggie: In the note at the start of your new book, you mention a survey you ran that was research for your book. What was that survey... what answers were you seeking in asking those questions? You say you're bilingual in that you can speak man speak AND woman speak: Can you share a bit about what you see to be the fundamental difference between the way boys/girls men/women communicate? This book really feels like it's a plea and an invitation to all mothers of boys to make a pledge and it's all leaping from your heart, you can feel it: Did it bubble away for you for a bit or did this book leap out into the world with urgency? Early on also you talk about the alarming stats on violence, self harm, addiction and suicide in young men. What do you believe are some of the biggest contributing factors to these stats? You talk about a limit to "free exploration" and a shift to experiencing life via a screen: How's that playing out? What effects? What is an urban, apartment dwelling family with an only child to do (ie my family)? The 2018 parent could read the stats / these shifts and be overcome with pangs of guilt and feel like they're not giving their child the childhood that will help them thrive best... BUT: Can these families create that wild freedom in new ways? What do you see to be the best ways we can help boys develop a good moral compass? The #Metoo movement has brought to the fore so many injustices inflicted by men from the old 'boy's code' of entitlement and power... but while we teach our boys that good moral compass it seems they're then handed over to the porn screens of the internet and see entitlement and power/domination exaggerated... How do we help them navigate kind and respectful relationships with girls when we can't control what they see 'out there' - is it as simple as being really open and having conversations about porn and its non-real depiction of sex? Does seeing a popularisation of "The Future is Female" make you sad? It makes me sad... I feel it's a good intention (women's equality) miscommunicated (ie, step aside men, women are taking over) when that was never the point of feminism... How do we navigate the rise of female empowerment, while holding space for men to evolve their definition in tact, in this new world? Now onto some other, wonderful and powerful things I took from your book: What often matters greatly to your son, will be some sort of experiment / activity that you will just not understand why on EARTH it's important: Can you give us an example of that / how we can recognise potential sabotaging of their 'special projects' and what to do to ensure they feel validated in them? How are our young boys sidelined as ineffective / 'dumb' / useless often, in schooling and at home with mixed sibling households and what are some of the best ways we can empower our boys to feel their worth / 'warrior tendency'? Decoding boy behaviour after school: This I loved from both your book and recent seminar... I often joke with my mother friends of girls, that thank gosh we get to find out everything that's going on / needs doing through the girls because trying to get two words out of Seb after school is blood from a stone. Could you share why that is? Best ways to get good juicy chats happening with our boys (and men!) There is a mistaken perception that boys and men don't feel emotions as much as women — they do. They just process them and often communicate them very differently. How is that and what do we need to be aware of as parents? Signs we need to help them unpack emotions about what's going on for them socially / school-wise? Best ways to help them open up? You talk about 'big ugly feelings' - what are they and how can we help our boy process them? And so believe it or not folks that's a few questions from literally just the first quarter of Maggie's new book. So much goodness in there and could honestly keep talking for hours, BUT given we have a strong focus on food / body / home and mind and we've done a lot of talking about the mind today, let's finish off with a couple of questions across the other low tox life pillars: Boys and body image. In your book you mention there's research coming out about boys as young as 8-10 with eating disorders. What on earth is causing this? What can we do to support a healthy relationship with body for young boys / love and respect for ones body? Food: The importance of family meal time both for nourishment physically and emotionally? Fussiness / being contrary about food that's been prepared lovingly: Is it really a dislike for the food? Control / power play where they might perhaps feel powerless elsewhere? And to finish off for today... A lot of us seem to feel instinctively that trying to make our children sit still, get good at tests is not the best way forward in education, and the literacy / numeracy rates since standardised testing seems to back us up on that feeling. If we're in a country, like Australia, where this is the case, what is your piece of advice to help us play a bigger game here to work to change the system? If you could say one last think to mothers of boys (all mother figures in a boy's life) to help us feel empowered to be the best mother figures we can be, helping our boys to grow and thrive: What would it be? Show #114: Katarina Wallentin on the wonder in the world & her children’s books with a difference
I'm so thrilled to have discovered Katarina Wallentin, when she sent us her book - Clara the Climate Changer. She has worked in many hidden parts of the globe with international organizations such as United Nations, Amnesty International and Doctors Without Borders. Her aim has always been to explore, experience and change the world we live in to something greater for now and the future. During her travels, she has experienced first-hand that nothing on this amazing Earth is totally black or white, right or wrong - a woman after my own heart! Instead, everything is interconnected and what you see, depends on the shade of the glasses you put on. This year she is publishing two children's books – The Baby Unicorn Manifest and Clara & the Climate Changer. She is currently working on a third book, for adults, called The Bullshitometer. Katarina lives in Stockholm with her 15-year-old daughter Emilia who she brings on her travels and adventures as often as possible and today we discuss a variety of topics based on these questions I asked her (and the tangents we went on!) The continuous exploration of the wondrous world we get to live in - you've got a rich CV full of interesting things and you also see a world in pain: How do you stay 'light' in exploring our world with wonder? How do you not let yourself experience overwhelm for all that needs our urgent attention? (Constant struggle for the conscious low tox peeps) Empowering people to know that they actually know - What do you mean by that, I'm intrigued! How do you raise a conscious kid in this age? There's never been more information available to us to teach with, yet by the same toke it feels that we shelter our kids from the 'real world' more than ever... You say you love being silly with my brilliant and funny and amazing15 year olddaughter and I love being silly with my 9 year old son - I'd love to hear what that looks like for you guys? How did you teach her balance between caring about causes / embracing playfulness? Do you believe that balance is what's going to help us continue to drive impactful change? It's no fun if it's all super serious, right? Tell me the story of how you decided to become a children's book author. You seem to have quite a lot ON!hehe. Clara the climatechanger: How did that come about? A personal passion for communicating climate change to people in a relatable way? Something else? Show #113: Jonathan Latham on understanding genetics, GMOs, roundup and the food movement
It's a brilliant science nerd alert this week for you on the show as I bring you Jonathan R Latham, PhD who is co-founder and Executive Director of the Bioscience Resource Project and the Editor of Independent Science News. Dr Latham is also the Director of the Poison Papers project which publicizes documents of the chemical industry and its regulators. Dr. Latham holds a Masters degree in Crop Genetics and a PhD in Virology. He was subsequently a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Genetics, University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has published scientific papers in disciplines as diverse as plant ecology, plant virology, genetics and genetic engineering. Dr Latham talks frequently at international events and scientific and regulatory conferences on the research conducted by the Project. He has written for Truthout, MIT Technology Review, the Guardian, Resilience, Salon.com, and many other magazines and websites. It's so important that if we're going to be ‘pro' a certain type of food that we need to truly understand what we're ‘against' so that when challenged we don't just heatedly say “it's toxic”. It's not enough and we need to meet curiosity with science so that people understand the informed position we're taking. Here's the frame work for the chat Jonathan and I had: QUESTIONS Re the food movement: the 'feed the world' debate / your views / solutions that don't involve gmos in their current usage / soil depletion / ecological disruption etc... And what you're most excited about right now with the grass roots ground swell happening all around. The poison papers - how they came about / what the objective is / As a contributor - what does your role entail? / The records date back to the 1920s, so in looking back do we see - as with so many things supposedly 'safe' then found harmful - timelines of examples (ddt / other chemicals)... Glyphosate / RoundUp got bumped back up to the top of conversation with the recent court ruling ordering Monsanto to pay $289USD to the groundskeeper of a school, finding that his cancer was caused by RoundUp usage: What can the poison papers reveal about RoundUp / Glyphosate? We can nut this section of the chat out more precisely before we hit record... Understanding genetics - What do we need to understand about the current GMO paradigm that isn't working for our health / planet's health? How does what's going on now negatively impact our health (BT toxin / Glyphosate ) and the planet's (monocropping / high herbicide / pesticide use etc) Is there any circumstance / example / technology that you've seen either in the works or currently used, which GMOs might work in our food system? And then more on what you want us to understand... dangers / evidence that's come to light etc. And of course, the usual tangents and twists you've come to expect on the show. Hope you love the show and as usual you can access the show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast Alexx x See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Hosted on Acast. Show #112: Dr John Demartini - Achieving goals by your highest value
Well, I still haven't quite come down from this conversation. So much to unpack from all the revelatory juice. I welcome with great enthusiasm, Dr John Demartini this week. He is considered one of the world's leading authorities on human behavior and personal development. He is the founder of the Demartini Institute, a private research and education organization with a curriculum of over 72 courses covering multiple aspects of human development. He travels 360 days a year to countries all over the globe where he shares his research and findings in all markets and sectors. He is the author of 40 books published in 29 different languages. He has produced over 60 CDs and DVDs covering subjects such as development in relationships, wealth, education and business. High achiever, much? And all from such humble beginnings with health adversity, homelessness and dropping out of school early. The only limits we have are those we place on ourselves and John not only proves it in his own life, but helps many around the world prove it to themselves. QUESTIONS I asked John along with some juicy tangents along the way… So many people live their current life and future projections, based on the bad stuff that might have clouded them from their past. You have such an inspiring story that PROVES it's not our past that defines our 'lot in life' but the values and priorities we decide on for ourselves. Seems despite some massive adversities in your life at such a young age, that you just knew you weren't going to be bound by limitation - Can you explain how that might be? Why were you able to 'just know' when so many people can't see beyond hardship? And then... what are some of the steps we could take to free ourselves from what we think might limit us and live freer / bigger lives? Is it doing deep work on our values first and foremost? We can spend whole days, months and years doing all the little things that aren't so important if we stop and think about our values / priorities - how do we shift this and lead with the big stuff that matters on a deep personal level instead of 'what everyone is asking of us societally / culturally? When is it 'rude / inconsiderate' to priorities our needs - is there a point at which this becomes selfish? What are some of the traps we can fall into, sacrificing our true selves for the demands of others? When it comes to the idea that people doing something meaningful with their lives tend to live longer - What about the person stuck in 2 jobs as a janitor / burger king cashier just to keep food on the table / kids clothed. One might argue that's not feeling very meaningful for them - Can the 'meaningful part' be our 'why' rather than the work itself... Caring for our kids is surely the most valuable endeavour of them all, right? So whatever it takes makes it meaningful? Illness: We've shifted from an infectious disease mortality to a chronic disease mortality and while a lot of the contributing causes are from the environment / the toxins in food / not enough nutrient dense foods / sedentary lifestyle etc - you also place a strong link between psychology and illness. Are we also 'thinking' ourselves sicker? Hope you love the show and as usual you can access the show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast Alexx x See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Show #111: Dr Libby Weaver on rushing women and The Beauty Guide
At long last, the stars align and Dr Libby is joining me for a chat. If you've been under a rock, Dr Libby Weaver (PhD) is one of Australasia's leading nutritional biochemists, an author, a speaker and founder of the plant-based supplement range, Bio Blends. Armed with an abundance of knowledge, scientific research and a true desire to help people regain their energy and vitality, Dr Libby empowers and inspires people to take charge of their health and happiness through her books, live events and nutritional support range. Having sold over 350,000 books across New Zealand and Australia, she is an eleven-times bestselling author and published internationally including in UK, US, Canada, France, Germany, Russia and Italy. What I love most about Libby is her passion transference capability - it's one thing to be extremely knowledgeable, it's a gift to be able to then share that knowledge passionately and inspire action in others. Here are the questions I ask Libby today - and of course we go off on the usual tangents! Cave Woman vs Modern Woman which laid the foundation for your Rushing Women's Syndrome book and general awareness. How is this modern world affecting women at the biochemical level? How do we see our A to our B of de-stressing? (Often there are feelings of disempowerment / feeling trapped that prevent us from stepping into our power to make the necessary changes) Pulling back the covers on what's really driving your stress... Let's talk about the major potential factors here and how we go about looking into our lives for our personal stress drivers Something I've loved hearing you talk about also to challenge the idea that all busy-ness is 'bad' in the past, is "Is 'stress' stressing you out / could you view 'having a lot on' in your life, as NOT being stressful in the negative sense. Can you talk us through that for those who haven't heard you talk about this before? How do we go about reframing 'SO BUSY' to "A rich and fulfilling life" so that in the busy times of a life we're loving full of things we love doing / people we love seeing, we're not mounting a harmful stress response? Now onto your latest book - 11th best selling book to be exact! What called you to write The Beauty Guide? How are you seeing comparison culture play out for people? It's not just women either... men being constantly told how to have rock hard abs etc... Is it really that different having online in the mix now? (Will add anecdote about a friend recounting her "who's got the best legs" lunch time school yard comparisons in Year 9... My friends all having to lay our bras out to discuss them / who had the coolest one. Are the teens, and then later women, of today feeling it even more with the added 'never switch off' potential fort comparisons to be made? How do we go about loving our bodies - many women just wouldn't know how to unpack their body hatred / how it started / how to move towards a conversation of love with their bodies. If we've time: Botox and other obsessions with never feeing that we're enough in our natural states? Is botox dangerous? Any research coming out yet? What to put on your skin – hormone-disrupting substances A topic after my own heart as you know... How do we go about repairing the damage that possibly decades (and generations) of endocrine disruptive chemicals have caused us? Detoxifying fat soluble / water soluble chemicals / obesogens... We're often told by the holistic-health-skeptics "Oh it's nonsense that people need to actively seek out additional detox protocols / programs, we have a liver!" BUT... We have never had a liver burdened by the level of things it's burdened by these days: What are some of your favourite liver support and repair strategies as we reduce every day toxins and start to ease the load. I hope you enjoy the show, and as usual the show supporter details and all additional resources we discuss in the show can be found over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast Alexx x See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Show #110: Dr Lewis Ehrlich: Your holistic dentistry questions answered Part 2
Dr Lewis Ehrlich is a highly sought after holistic dentist who graduated from James Cook University (JCU) with the Academic Medal. With a background in professional sport and his passion for holistic health, Lewis focuses on the link between oral health and general overall health in his practice - it's why you'll never hear a bandaid solution for an oral health concern in my interviews with him! Before studying dentistry, he completed a Bachelor of Science at Northeastern University in Boston, USA after receiving a soccer scholarship where he played for 2 years. He then moved to Reykjavik, Iceland where he played professional soccer before moving into dentistry and now practicing at Sydney Holistic Dental. This show, part 2 of two that I'm recording with Dr Lewis (go back for the 1st one last month!), is the result of my asking the Low tox club chat group and alumni course groups if they had any ongoing concerns and questions about oral health - from teeth (grinding / enamel / cavities) to gums to oral microbiome to jaws to treatments and appliances and preventative health. There I was thinking I was going to be doing a show on grinding and appliance options with ‘a few' questions from you guys but when 100+ questions quickly presented themselves, I changed tack and turned it into a two part “All your holistic dentistry questions” answered. So in this show, part 2, we talk: Cavities and fillings Preventative oral health Miscellaneous trouble shoots from grinding to tongue ties to geographic spots and so much more! Head over to lowtoxlife.com/podcast for all the details. Here are the questions answered in this second FAQ with Lewis and we twist and tangent on all things oral care in between: On fillings and cavity protection:At a dentist a few years ago, my 5 yr old had 3 fillings told me it was bad luck and there was nothing I could do. Dietary improvement was my first thing. What else? I have tried using natural toothpastes and they all cause mouth ulcers and corners of my mouth to crack really bad? I really want to use natural toothpaste but I'm unsure which ingredient may be causing this? Any suggestions?? Thank you.I'd be interested to hear about what toothpaste (glycerine or no glycerine) and/or toothbrush (electric vs manual) he recommends for children. I've read so many different opinions on this topic, particularly in relation to the glycerine in toothpaste issue, so any brand recs would be great. would you mind asking Dr. Ehrlich if there is any actual benefit to using toothpaste, or is it just an added bonus to make your breath fresh and your mouth feel like it's had a good clean because you can "taste" the clean. I read somewhere recently that there's no real benefit to toothpaste, that it's the brushing and flossing that actually is the most important part of the process. On preventative oral health What does he think of Weston Price's research on teeth -diet prevents over crowding, don't remove wisdom teeth, root canals can cause heart disease?Does he believe vitamin d / k2 supplementation universally necessary for kids? How do you change your mouth microbiome, with symptoms such as bad breathe, metallic taste, white tongue, excessive saliva? I know there is a correlation with gut dysbiosis and the bacteria imbalance starting in the mouth. And working on the gut is key to changing the way the gut and body functions, but are there ways to change the mouth microbiome in order to get a head start on changing the gut microbiome.I have receding gums. I'm wondering if this is due to poor diet or brushing my gums too hard ( I like to get it really clean), and what natural remedies I could try before seeing a traditional dentist? Anything to help get kids to look after their teeth...?We've just been recommended to brush with kids fluoride toothpaste and then after rinsing pop more on the back molars that are showing signs of decay. Are there any alternatives? It's my 4yo with the issues. On trouble shooting miscellaneous issues What causes grinding and how to fix? My son has a ‘geographic' spot on his tongue. ( changes location all the time) What could be the causes? Is it a sign of something more problematic? Teeth clenching and how to stop it! I'm having to wear a mouth guard at night and I've heard miss 4 grind her teethTongue tie - I've recently been told by a holistic dentist that I have a partial tongue tie - had no idea and I'm sure there are loads of people like me. She said it goes hand in hand with jaw clenching and teeth grinding. My question is how important is it to have corrected. I figure I've made it past 50 years of age without knowing - maybe I can let this one slide.Chromogenic bacteria, how does someone get this over night (or the dark coloured appearance anyway)and what's the best solutions for it? If you cannot go to a holistic dentist for whatever reason, what to look for in a dentist or dental practice?Love to know more about breathing and connection with the teeth I am reading that if we don't breathe correctly that's the reason our mouth is crowded etc? Mouth taping for kids. Can you do it? Who do you need to consult/see before it's considered appropriate? My 8 year old has a small jaw and not enough room for his teeth, he has poor teeth as well. his gums have white marks on them above the teeth, would love to know why his gums have these marks. We eat organic only, low tox, Whole Foods diet and lifestyle... can't work it out. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Show #109: Joel Salatin on food, soil and regenerative effects of working with nature's systems
Oooh how excited I am to share this conversation this week. Joel Salatin, 61, calls himself a Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer. Others who like him call him the most famous farmer in the world, the high priest of the pasture, and the most eclectic thinker from Virginia since Thomas Jefferson. Those who don't like him call him a bio-terrorist, Typhoid Mary, charlatan, and starvation advocate. With a room full of debate trophies from high school and college days, 12 published books, and a thriving multi-generational family farm, he draws on a lifetime of food, farming and fantasy to entertain and inspire audiences around the world. He's as comfortable moving cows in a pasture as addressing CEOs in a Wall Street business conference. Sounds like someone worth hearing what they have to say, right? You will leave this conversation more hopeful and happy than you found it when it comes to the food and farming front, that I can guarantee you. Here are the questions I asked Joel with the usual twists, tangents and deviations you've come to expect. For the people who've been under a rock... Were you born and bred a farmer? Did you always farm in the way you do now? a) the magic of regenerative principlesb) the magic of soil and grassc) how animals are an essential part of the prosperity of both of those! d) a couple of favourite rehab / regenerative projects - how they came about / what kind of resistance you were perhaps met with initially and what kinds of transformations the land experienced by changing farming style... can it be fast? e) how small hold farming can be a wonderful, profitable businessf) if you had a farmer in front of you today, who was a feedlot farmer or a small farmer using lots of sprays and they kind of knew it wasn't an ideal set up, but born perhaps into the system they were born into, they can't see from A to B... a) do you think they can change over time / adopt new principles / business modelling et b) where on earth would they be able to start? g) Regenerative farming for climate change challengesHope you love the show and as usual you can access the show notes and sponsor offer over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast Alexx x See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Show #108: The Art of Self Love with author Kim Morrison
Do you love yourself? Really, really love yourself? That's what we're unpacking this week as I speak to the beautiful Kim Morrison about her new book on the subject. While we discuss her personal story and realisations over the years, we'll also be talking about some the deep work we can do to love ourselves, in a world that sell product based on us not being good enough to love in our current state, SO much of the time. Kim was born in New Zealand and raised in Auckland. She proudly set the auspicious world record to be the youngest woman to run 100miles in under 24hours and holds 8 Australian indoor records. She's a business woman, an aromatherapist and personal trainer and has completed studies in nutrition, reflexology and counselling. She's married to former international NZ Cricketer Danny Morrison and we have two two teens Tayla and Jakob and they have been living on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland since 2006 - proud Aussies these days! Here are the questions I asked Kim (and there were some juicy tangents as usual) Why another book? Why now? Very early in the book you talk about a rather massive unravelling in your life. A rock bottom of sorts. Could you share a little piece of that with us now? And then you talk about your son's saving words, which I have to admit, I was reading and thinking “sounds like something out of Minecraft” hehe so I was laughing big time when I then saw the video game reference… BUT he still know they were the perfect words to offer at the time, right? How have you garnered compassion in your kids over the years? I think as parents it's something we all hope for / try our best to instil - what does teaching your kids compassion look like for you? Did you experience an element of what your husband experienced when his cricketing career ended? Ie, you're the youngest and fasted 100mile runner in 1983: Where the heck does one GO from there? Did you need to recalibrate / find renewed sense of purpose? You reference Don Miguels 4 non negotiables. I want to discuss 2 there because I think they're particularly juicy. No specific questions on these / just want to talk them out for a bit… 1. Don't take anything personally - gosh that's a big challenge as we've become SUCH a reactive society, right? / 2. Never make assumptions and be brave enough to ask questions / make clear what you really want. No 2 is HUGE isn't it? I think I might make it the challenge of the week: List all your assumptions from “this is too spicy for my child” to “my husband won't have any interest in moving to France” (did I say that out loud? hehe) and everything in between. You talk about an experience your son had as a 16 year old and instead of “how the F could you do such a think” type predictable parent to teen talk in a crisis, you explained calmly while stroking his head that he'd fallen out of love with himself… Just WOW. Did you need an element of strength to act that way do you think? Did it come naturally? What can parents of teens do to navigate that stormy era where the S can hit the fan and use them as resilience building blocks instead of massive road blocks, which it sure seems you were able to do with Jakob! Now let's hook into this Art of Self Love more deeply - How did you arrive at the 6 steps of self love? How does it manifest if we're not loving ourselves? 6 basic steps and you say 3 are about DOING the work and 3 are about BEING the work - can you talk about what you mean there? Can one dip into any of the steps as you see fit for the situation - ie needing one more than another at a certain time in life or do you find a sequent. You talk about self sabotage as a driver that takes us OFF our self love and goal setting course… Self sabotage being defined as “wanting something” yet deliberately sabotaging yourself through decisions that give you the opposite of what desire. Can you share an instance of self sabotage in your life? Oils for self sabotage? Guilt: Useful or another part of the self sabotage picture? Oils for guilt ? Now, we don't possibly have time for going this in dept into all of the things holding us back, so you have the book for that. Kim, If there were three small daily practices that you value above all others to keep our self love alive, what would they be? Show #107: Dr Lewis Ehrlich: Your holistic dentistry questions answered Part 1
This show, part 1 of two that I'm recording with Dr Lewis, is the result of my asking the Low tox club chat group and alumni course groups if they had any ongoing concerns and questions about oral health - from teeth (grinding / enamel / cavities) to gums to oral microbiome to jaws to treatments and appliances and preventative health. There I was thinking I was going to be doing a show on grinding and appliance options with ‘a few' questions from you guys but when 100+ questions quickly presented themselves, I changed tack and turned it into a two part “All your holistic dentistry questions” answered. So in this show, part 1, we talk about tooth enamel - when it's weakened / why / what to do as well as various apparatuses you might be thinking about using be it metal wires, myo brace, invisalign, silicon and plastic plates and spacers etc. The show notes have a tonne of resources with toothpaste recommendations that both do and don't contain fluoride, as well as floss recommendations, useful extra-listening podcasts and Dr Lewis's practice details, as well as our show supporter offer. Head over to lowtoxlife.com/podcast for all the details. Here are the questions answered in this first FAQ with Lewis and we twist and tangent on all things oral care in between: On the enamel... My daughter has crap enamel. Tips to improve? She was recommended tooth mousse but has casein ( to which she is allergic). We do do cod liver oil ( Nordic naturals). We were also recommended the clear protective coating that lasts a few years, I believe it's made of plastic though! Would love to know more about that also. Why do we see such an influx of kids with hypoplasia (enamel not formed properly) and what are the REAL causes?! I just can't quite believe that it is something that happened in utero because the mother was ill or antibiotics may have played a part (neither applied to me and yet one of my kids has a severe case of hypoplasia). I know sooooo many kids with this problem, is there any new research that can pin point the cause of this yet? Maybe environmental causes (wouldn't it be crazy if we all found out it was an everyday toxin that caused this in this generation of kids). This is a really heartbreaking story for us, my son is only 7 and so conscious of his teeth and we are constantly at the specialist dentists, feeding him the best food possible etc. I also really want to know about hypoplasia! Is there anything we can do to improve it and strengthen the teeth? Is there some kind if plan we can follow to avoid lots of decay in the future? My daughter had perfect baby teeth and her new teeth have all started coming out blotchy and with discoloured patches. Poor thing is so self conscious already. Thanks for giving us the chance to ask. wanting to know about crap enamel and fluoride - is tooth mousse and fluoride in water REALLY necessary? We went and saw Lewis Ehrlich for my son and he recommended tooth mousse to help improve his enamel but then our current paediatric dentist (not a holistic one) said he doesn't believe the product is necessary and strongly advised to use fluoride to help strengthen the enamel. I would like to know the best option to help strengthen enamel low tox or not.I'm also very interested in hearing more about reversing and/or preventing demineralisation, particularly for women post birth. Seems to be a problem for many.Best treatment if any for fluorosis? And is the the prevention of this just avaoiding fluoride consumption? My 5 year old daughter has only ever used natural fluoride free tooth paste. She has spots on her teeth that are translucent rather than white. Is this from her natural tooth paste? She has only had antibiotics once in her life and her diet is excellent. On instruments / apparatuses / procedures / cosmetic dental Any thoughts on children having separators to make room for teeth? Is that a question or just the normal thing to do?I had invisalign done a few years ago and I'm wondering if there are any negative effects from this treatment and from the metal retainers on my teeth now?If you have already had Invisalign or have to wear a retainer at night (to prevent grinding) - is there a material that is preferable for construction? Thanks.Best way to whiten teeth Not sure if it's been mentioned but my daughter has stainless steel crowns from poorly formed molars. I want them out. But need some back as to why. Don't have access to holistic dentist. Are fissure seals necessary in kids? I have a bite splint as I'm a chronic grinder. I have been told that the splint material is the only option, it seems very plasticy to me and wondering how toxic it is as I would be grinding that and it would be entering my system. I've been told I need to wear it as I have had to have crowns to replace the teeth that I ground away so badly. Can you please ask about Mayo braces vs Invisalign?Young kids who will need braces or similar - is there any holistic early intervention or other options - Or mainstream orthodontists ok for that stuff? Implants...if despite seeing more than 6 different dentists, you choose not to get an implant, is there any drama just leaving a gap?I have a root canal which I know has cause some of my health issues. What is the best way to get it removed to ensue all the nastiest are removed & is it OK to just leave a gap or is it important to get an implant or denture.I need to have two false teeth put in on one post. Or a bridge. It's to replace a very old permanent bridge (Maryland bridge) for a small false tooth next to one of the front teeth. The front tooth it's fixed to also needs to go unfortunately. Anyway would love to know if any options are low tox. I'm also allergic to wearing stainless steel. I hadn't even thought about that as an issue until I read a comment above about stainless steel crowns. There were quite a few of us in the last ecourse wondering about the effect of metal wires behind teeth to keep teeth in place after braces etc. what are the long term/short term effects of the glue/metal and can they be mitigated? Is there a better solution? Due to the huge amount of people who have undergone teeth straightening it would be great to find out! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
