316. Erin Lovell Verinder: Herbal Medicine And Detoxification - A holistic approach.

When we think detoxification these days, we often think quite mechanically about purging, killing things (mould/parasites), intensive programs, expensive labs et al, and while there is a time and place for all of it and it’s a bio-individual need, nutritionist and herbal medicine practitioner Erin Lovell Verinder wants us to explore what a day by day, bit by bit approach looks like by exploring the magnificent plants that help us detoxify and eliminate every day as well as the ways in which we might need to up the ante from time to time. We discuss her 3 x desert Island plants as a herbalist, how important the mindset around health is, the different ways in which we can become empowered by plants-as-medicine and incorporate them safely into our day to day. 314. Colleen Ryan-Hensley on “binging sober” - drawing ourselves to a place of health and healing by moving through what’s difficult.

This show takes a look at sobriety in a powerful new way where absolutes work for some and are needed, Colleen Ryan Hensley shares an additional perspective: What if we binged on sobriety the way we binged on all the things that take us away from feeling all the feelings of life and moving through it wholly awake and more empowered? Colleen is a 10-year Navy veteran, candidate for Certified Mental Performance Coach with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and founder of https://colleenryanhensley.com/ which I encourage you to connect with if today’s conversation resonates. She holds an advanced degree in performance psychology and spent 5-years with the team of cutting-edge researchers and clinicians at the University of Texas at Dallas’ Center for BrainHealth teaching High-Performance Cognitive Training to military veterans and their spouses and caregivers, active duty military, and first responders around the country. There are a lot of things we do to numb ourselves in life and today we explore how it looks and what we might stand to gain by widening the gaps between those numbing tools being in use, and the times when we’re “binging sober” as Colleen puts it. A wonderful show to encourage introspection as we close out a year and look to the next. Thanks for being here as a brilliant member of our podcast-listening community. 313. Bruce Scott on the power of bodywork.

We often don’t know just how good we are designed to feel and in today’s show, I interview Bruce Scott, the Body Magician, who works hard to help people feel that. Bodywork is a way through human touch and guidance, to help us nourish our nervous systems and re-write the programming of our physical and mental state as a result - a powerful tool because we are an equal part of the process rather than having something ’done’ to us and in a world where health is so often externalised, bodywork calls on us to come home and explore. How did Bruce come to do this work? It’s a powerful story in itself. At ten years of age, Bruce became sick with viral meningitis and went from being an elite gymnast to living in a dark room unable to go outside, even to school. Extensive treatments with Western medicine were not helping and by thirteen, Bruce had arthritis in every joint in his body. He started learning tai chi and receiving a Swedish remedial massage once a week. Within six months, he was fully recovered and could play sports outdoors, run for miles and started boxing.Bruce, aka The Body Magician, says the combination of movement, breathing and massage transformed his life and  now he is using it to transform the lives of others. Known as BODYWORK, Bruce's work is a therapeutic practice combining massage, assisted stretching and breath-work to heal the body.He is on a mission to support the body’s ability to heal, and helps clients find energy, vitality, creativity and clarity through deep relaxation. Bruce works with everyone from athletes to CEO’s, mums and dads, entertainers, artists, authors and more. He helps people dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, burnout, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, hormonal challenges, migraines, PTSD, pregnancy, pre and post operative care and mor and I’m delighted to bring you this conversation that I had with Bruce on the show as 2022 comes to an end. 312. Operation Crayweed - A regenerative marine ecology project en route to success, with Adriana Verges

This week I am thrilled to present you with an example of hope and progress in the regeneration space. With the right tools, funding and action we can rebuild the health of our planet and Professor Adriana Verges and her team are showing us the way with Operation Crayweed on the coast of Sydney, Australia - I’m so inspired to bring you this story because it shows a path of success and once we believe we can be successful in regeneration efforts, we see the evidence and positive effects, we then have more conviction and motivation and the ripple effects are in motion. Professor Vergés’s research focuses on the ecology and conservation of coastal marine habitats. In particular, her team investigates the ecological impacts of climate change in our oceans and develops hands-on restoration solutions to protect and conserve marine ecosystems including seagrass meadows, kelp forests and coral reefs. 311. Dr Lucas Tims on cancer - root causes, prevention and how we can broaden our treatment options for improved patient experience.

This week continuing our health series, I interview Dr Lucas Tims, medical director of the Riordon Clinic, Kansas, USA. Cancer through the naturopathic doctor lens gives a broader set of options to explore to not only treat the patient, but to change the terrain and make the body less hospitable to cancer now and into the future - a key piece of the treatment and healing puzzle sadly missing in conventional care which is “let’s try to kill and zap it and hope it doesn’t return or grow’. It’s inspiring to know Dr Lucas and other physicians like him are out there providing this holistic care and I hope it’s a helpful show for you, friends and any family that might need it right now. 310. FROM SCRATCH: Adventures in Hunting, Fishing, and Foraging on a Fragile Planet, with David Moscow

What does “From Scratch” cooking mean to you? In modern times it’s come to mean making food at home, instead of ordering take-out or packaged snacks. Today, we take “from scratch” to it’s true meaning which is hunting, gathering, fishing and then preparing the food, exploring how that looks around the world, through the work of film maker and story teller, David Moscow. David Moscow is the creator, executive producer, and host of From Scratch and co-author of a book by the same name. He made his feature film debut at age thirteen in Big, starring as the young Tom Hanks; years later, he starred with Christian Bale in Newsies. He has appeared in dozens of films, television shows, and theater productions over a thirty-five year career. Most recently, David founded the production company UnLTD Pictures. He has executive produced more than twenty feature films and he also develops mixed-income sustainably green apartment buildings - in his spare time! I hope you enjoy our exploration and his stories, from FROM SCRATCH: Adventures in Hunting, Fishing, and Foraging on a Fragile Planet. 309. Endometriosis with Alexandra Middleton, naturopath.

Are you or someone you know experiencing heavy, painful periods or suspecting/diagnosed with endometriosis? Today’s guest, Alexandra Middleton received so little care in her early journey that she quit investment banking and studied naturopathy to better understand and support her disease and then work to support other women in clinical practice. Endometriosis has been vastly underdiagnosed with hundreds and thousands of women complaining of debilitating symptoms and pain with nothing more than a suggestion of a pain killer and rest. In today’s show we discuss what’s at play, what some of the root causes can be that contribute to the development and progression of endometriosis, and how looking after ourselves and our environment is key as we heal and recover - with or without surgical intervention. Please share it far and wide with those who might benefit from the support and guidance. 308. Jeff Lieberman: From mess to message: How to support our teens into adulthood with “Sleepawake”

Did you feel connected, supported and ready as you headed into adulthood? Did you know yourself? Well Jeff Lieberman didn’t and had a really tough time of teen life and early adulthood, despite from the outside looking like an all-star student and human with 4 university degrees, a successful large-scale art business and hosting a show on the History Channel. Jeff jokes that he learned quantum mechanics before learning about his emotions but is quick to point out the tragedy of this. He marvels at the fact that we can measure the external universe to 10-decimal accuracy, but most of us don’t learn about our insides: our emotions, what leads to flourishing, how to take great care of ourselves. Years of personal exploration transformed him, leading to a determination to not have the road to joy be difficult for others to find. He has spent the last 15 years training in meditation, personal development, and group dynamics for well being, facilitating high school students through a 3-week intensive and adults through an 18-month program. His new camp Sleepawake has had incredible results and in today’s show you’ll get a window into just how much we can do now, and for our young adults and teens, to steer a happier, healthier course as connected ,purposeful individuals and communities. 307. Hannah Churton - Food waste solutions from the mindset, to the practicalities of worm farming and compost

This week is all about taking action on food waste - which, if it was a country it would be the 3rd largest emitter behind China and the USA - It’s a BIG deal and instead we seem to keep focusing on what’s on the plate instead of what’s in the BIN! Hannah Churton literally lives to make people feel confident about bringing worm farming or composting solutions into your life and in this show we discuss best options for a range of home styles - including apartments without balconies - and we also discuss barriers to entry, hiccups when getting started and common trouble shoots and what to do. I hope you love it as much as I did. I took extra good care of my worms this week, remembering just how important a job they did, after speaking with Hannah.
