Pilsner: Myths and Inspiration from the Beer of Kings
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes Tom Acitelli who authored the new book Pilsner: How the Beer of Kings Changed the World along with Chris Lohring of Notch Brewing and Matt Levy from Threes Brewing. Tom began his latest book project in a search to understand what laid the groundwork for the craft beer movement and argues we wouldn’t have the beer marketplace we do now without pilsner. He talks about the history of style and how it evolved along with innovations in roasting, while the brewers offer their perspective on the technical demands of making pilsner (especially with the space limitations of NYC). Matt discusses the evolution of the lager program at Threes, including recent beers they are aging in oak, while Chris shares why he has chosen to stick with sessionable beers even while the industry leans towards high ABV IPAs. Unearthing New York's Long History of Milling
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy revisits the question of ‘what came first beer or bread?’ and dives deep into the history of milling. Joining him are guests, Lavada Nahon, a culinary historian and interpreter for African American history for NYS Department of Parks; Amy Halloran, flour ambassador and the author of The New Bread Basket; and Bryan Ford, of Artisan Bryan and the author of New World Sourdough. Starting with when settlers brought wheat, barley and rye from Europe and turned New York into a bread basket, Lavada helps paint a picture of early New Amsterdam and unearth a whitewashed history that has left out the critical role enslaved people played in the grain economy. Amy and Lavada talk about the types of bread recipes that were common at the time, while Bryan shares how he is learning to break the mold we have surrounding bread today, which still uses a European standard. Changing Alcohol Laws in New York State
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy talks about the whirlwind of changes that have been made to New York’s alcohol laws during the pandemic and considers what the future may hold. He is joined by Max Bookman of Pesetsky & Bookman, PC, a law firm specializing in alcohol licensing in New York state. Beer bar owners, Anthony Ramirez II and Paul Ramirez of The Bronx Beer Hall add their perspective to the conversation as well. Although canned beer could be legally sold to-go before the pandemic, beer bar owners have still had to make a major pivot after losing their indoor seating capacity. Anthony and Paul share the creative decisions they have made - including buying a slushie machine - while Max gets into the nuts and bolts of what requirements exist for bars and how recent developments surrounding the sale of food have developed. In the second half of the show, the group considers how recent changes may have permanently altered the landscape for policy making and the guests share their wishlist for future reforms including open container laws, changing the legal drinking age, and keeping to-go beverages legal. Pa’lante: Puerto Rican Culture and Collaborations
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes the collaborators behind Pa’lante, a cream ale inspired by the Puerto Rican rice pudding, Arroz Con Dulce. The beer is flavored with coconut, raisins, and vanilla beans and aged in Pitorro barrels. Pa’lante means “Move Forward” in Spanish and proceeds from the project go to Friends of Puerto Rico. Hear from Kelly M Coffey from Big Alice Brewing who came up with the idea, as well as Joel Suarez and Matt Negron from Uptown Beer Society who have worked on many collaborations spotlighting Latinx culture. Rafael Barbosa of Port Morris Distillery and Cesar Andrade of Craft Culture also join the first half of the conversation and Paul Ramirez and Anthony Ramirez II of The Bronx Beer Hall join for the second half. 950 Breweries and Counting: The Black is Beautiful Stout
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes Marcus Baskerville the founder of Weathered Souls Brewing and the creator of the Black is Beautiful Stout, a collaboration centered on racial justice that has reached nearly 1,000 breweries worldwide.
