follow the hunger wherever it may lead you: a Lenten invitation

Lent is not a demand for hungry people to go more hungry, or lonely people to become more isolated. It’s an invitation to make room, where we are a little too full. There are some things we cannot see, some things we cannot hear, some things we will not consider—until we are hungry. What would it mean for you to not live in denial of the hunger, but follow it wherever the hunger might lead you? That is the invitation of Lent.

Is the Russia/Ukraine Crisis about the End Times? Also, why I'm still Christian.

With a title that descriptive, what more is there to know here?! 🤣 Prophecy, eschatology, politics, the end of days, and a really authentic talk of faith and spirituality from the inside...this is all of those things. It's a crazy time in the world, and thus a crazy time in ourselves.

How to Tear it Down, Without Being Caught Up in the Mob!

According to Jeremiah, the prophetic task is to “pluck up & pull down, destroy & overthrow, to build & plant"--so there’s evidently a lot of destructive work that has to happen to make space for something new! “Tearing down & plucking up” isn’t just being “negative,” especially when you are creating space for new life to bloom. But how do we do this, without being swept up into the mob religion that is simply cynicism & suspicion?

A Sermon on Blaspheming the Holy Spirit

This episode features Jonathan’s sermon, On blaspheming the Holy Spirit. This sober text haunted me much of my life. What would it mean to commit the unpardonable sin? What could I do that would be so bad that not even God would forgive it? Now I’m convinced that this text is even more haunting than ever, & it does even strike a kind of fear in me—but not in the way it used to. How can we keep from becoming the kinds of people who “saw off the very branch on which we are sitting?”When people are seen as being too inclusive and expansive in proclaiming God’s love, they are often accused of having it upside down—of calling evil good. But in this passage, it’s opposite of that: people see clear goodness, kindness, and beauty, and still label it evil. Why is it so dangerous to call good, evil? Who puts their own soul in danger—the ones who sees no limit to the mercy of God, or the one who denies the image of God in their neighbor? Controversially, we dare to claim that the truest and deepest danger is not in who we exclude. And that whatever harm we might do in keeping our people from the community of God (and attempt to do what cannot be done—keep them them from the One who inaugurated this new community), is not nearly as great as the harm we do to ourselves when we refuse to recognize the goodness in plain sight in front of us.Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/sonofapreacherman/Visit Jonathan's Website: http://www.jonathanmartinwords.com/Watch The Zeitcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdHzTuNKhTK-AZjfmkxQiwwPlease rate, review, share, and subscribe!Edited and produced by Joel Everson
