Running Remote: Compliance In The New Frontier - Liam Martin - ep. 014
Send us a textRick and Kaleem trade laughs with Liam Martin, co-organizer of Running Remote, the world's largest remote work conference. Liam is also co-founder of Time Doctor, a time tracking and productivity software for businesses and individuals. One of the golden nuggets of this episode is Liam's knowledge surrounding the bureaucracy of remote work. He is able to explain it in a way that dissolves the "big brother" aspect of compliance. Intimidating tactics such as screen monitoring, time tracking, and other types of critical documentation may seem over the top, but are both necessary and required by law. Unbeknownst to them, the majority of remote workers today are operating in non-compliant work spaces. Pay close attention to Liam's story about the person who broke their collarbone while working from home, and was able to sue their employer for unsafe working conditions. Sounds crazy, but it's the world we now live in.Look for Liam at this year's Running Remote in Montreal May 17th - 18th. Thanks for hanging with us today, Liam! Rise Of The Slowmad - Jordan Carroll - ep. 012
Send us a textToday's episode is a fun one. Rick and Kaleem share some quality chuckles with Jordan Carroll, Founder of The Remote Job Coach and The Remote Job Club. He is a brilliant mentor and also the author of Remote For Life, a book currently in production and slated for publication in mid 2022. Jordan is a former Digital Nomad and now considers himself a Slowmad - a working professional who has the freedom to live anywhere, but chooses to stay in one place for an extended period of time. We loved the term so much, we put it in the episode title. But the real gem in this episode is Jordan's advice to people looking to launch a remote career: Start with the visualization of the life you want, and embrace the core belief that you can do it. Hard to argue with that. Thanks, Jordan - come back anytime for more laughs! Humancentric - The Ultimate Employee Experience: Ben Whitter- ep. #010
Send us a textIn this episode, Kaleem and Rick talk with Ben Whitter, the number one employee experience thinker in the world. That's no typo. Ben is widely acknowledged as the leading authority on employee experience (EX) globally. Neither Rick nor Kaleem can believe they got to spend an hour with him.Ben and his team help colleagues, companies, and audiences to develop their holistic, human-centered, and experience-driven approach to deliver exceptional business and human outcomes. His client list includes world-leading brands like Unilever, Microsoft, GSK, JP Morgan Chase, FedEX, Deutsche Telekom, Ogilvy, Ford, Suntory, and Sanofi. This dude is so badass, he even bought a forest. A FOREST. In this amazing conversation, we learned that bad management is a recipe for disaster. Any company or organization can provide a world class employee experience, but the moment poor management is implemented, none of it will matter. If the Coronavirus pandemic taught us anything, it's that there are better ways to work. People have had enough of working themselves to exhaustion for managers who don't value them as people. Once you hear this episode, you're likely to agree: The world can learn a lot from Ben Whitter. Beyond The Buzzwords - Diversity of Thought: Caro Griffin- ep. #009
Send us a textIn this episode, Rick and Kaleem have a great chat with Caro Griffin, Founder of Opsy, a community for operations professionals. Calling Mexico City home, Caro has worked remotely from 30 countries. When she was starting out, she wasn't completely convinced on the benefits of remote work. But over time, travelling the world and meeting people from all walks of life, Caro soon learned that absolutely nothing could put her back in an office role. The discussion also touches on inclusion, diversity, and the gray areas of job descriptions. A company may advertise for a work-from-home position, but if any part of that role involves reporting to an office, it's not quite remote. Buyer beware! All in all, this was a fun episode, and the fellas learned a whole lot. Thanks, Caro! Accountability, The Elephant In The Room: Paul Chason - ep. #008
Send us a textIn this episode, Rick and Kaleem have an in-depth conversation with Paul Chason, Digital Consultant and Open Source Business Leader. As an exited Founder and Partner at Mediacurrent, a multi-million dollar open-source digital agency, Paul was kind enough to share some of his experiences and sharp insights surrounding remote work. With so many companies struggling with the ongoing shift toward remote careers, the question they often face is "how do we effectively balance productivity and accountability?" Well, we couldn't possibly answer that as eloquently as Paul did, but his advice was spot on: Avoid policies, and instead build guidelines. Embrace the reality that everyone brings different skills and work histories to the table, and rigid structure will debilitate the remote employee experience. This conversation was a real eye-opener, but an absolute pleasure to be a part of. Thanks, Paul!
