Health Check Ep 64: Understanding the loneliness crisis 16:29 mins Synopsis: Every first and third Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you. Loneliness is toxic. It is associated with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, sleep issues and stress. It can also shorten your life. New research from the Duke-NUS Medical school in Singapore and Nihon University in Tokyo, Japan has found that lonely older adults can expect to live a shorter life than their peers who don’t perceive themselves as lonely. Their health would also be affected. The study was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society on July 7.  In this episode, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo asks Assistant Professor Rahul Malhotra, lead author of the study and the head of research at the Centre for Ageing Research and Education at Duke-NUS, to tell us more about loneliness.  They discuss the following points: What is loneliness? The Big Story Ep 102: Covid-19: No dining in from July 22-Aug 18 as Singapore returns to Phase 2 6:17 mins Synopsis: This is a special episode of The Straits Times' video series The Big Story, hosted by Dylan Ang. Covid-19 measures will be tightened from Thursday (July 22) to August 18, as Singapore goes back to Phase 2 (heightened alert) to stem the recent spike in community cases. In a virtual press conference on Tuesday (July 20) by the multi-ministry task force on Covid-19, Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong said dining in, will not be allowed during this period, among other restrictions. Eateries can only offer takeaway and delivery options. Maximum group sizes for social gatherings will be reduced from five to two. The number of distinct visitors per household per day will also be capped at two, from the current five. Green Pulse Ep 54: How carbon credits can help save tropical forests (Part 2) 11:43 mins Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change. Carbon credits are gaining traction as companies and countries pledge to have their emissions reach “net-zero”, some by 2050 and others later. One source of such credits are forest conservation projects. By protecting forests from being cut down, trees are left to do what they do best: Soak up planet-warming carbon dioxide. How does this growing appetite for carbon credits help to protect the planet’s natural carbon sponges?
