The Egg Whisperer Show

I'm so excited that Dr. Kevin Osteen is joining me this week for the Egg Whisperer Show. He is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College. Since the 1990s, Dr. Osteen's research program has focused on environmental endocrine disruptors and how they impact endometriosis. His laboratory developed "organ-on-a-chip" technology, which is a tiny plastic "chip" about the size of a USB thumb drive that mimics the workings of the microenvironment of a human organ. Dr. Osteen's team created the first endometrium and endometriosis chip models. These "organ-on-a-chip" models provide a way to test and observe what happens in "normal" endometrium, and in those that have endometriosis. This technology changes the way doctors study this disease. Dr. Osteen and I are talking about the organ-on-a-chip technology, endometriosis, and endocrine disruptors, and reproductive health. Dr. Mira Aubuchon joins The Egg Whisperer Show to talk about PCOS. The facts: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome could make it more difficult for women to get pregnant. Contrary to its name, having PCOS doesn't mean your ovaries have cysts. It means your ovaries have a high number of follicles (tiny "cysts") containing eggs that are often unable to mature due to a hormone imbalance.⠀⁠ ⠀⁠ Symptoms of the condition include irregular or absent periods, high testosterone, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), and acne. I call it HOPE Syndrome. H is for High testosterone. O is for Ovaries with a lot of follicles. P is for Periods that are irregular. E is for eating + exercise habits that you need to develop early on. ⁠ PCOS definitely has its challenges, but, having it does not mean you'll never have children or that your eggs cannot produce a healthy, beautiful baby. Talking about your fertility when you're over 40 is not easy, but I want women to stop apologizing for desiring a family. Times have changed. It's okay to want a baby over 40. It's not crazy, nor selfish. Watch my show on this topic here. My approach is for all of my patients to be given their best chance at a healthy pregnancy in the shortest period of time. How do we do this? It starts by not believing everything you read. There's an international headline I saw recently on BBC news that fertility doctors are exploiting older women and "dealing false hope". Do I believe that fertility doctors deliver false hope? No way! I do not. Do I believe that it's imperative to get a diagnosis before treatment, regardless of who you are and your age? Yes! Diagnosis before treatment. Please! I want my patients over 40 to understand their follicle count. Then I want them to decide if moving forward with treatment using their own eggs is the best path forward. There are so many ways to have a baby if your own body is not making it happen there are other creative paths to explore. Egg and embryo donation and adoption are a few examples.
