I encourage all of my patients to work with an acupuncturist during fertility treatment. ⁠ ⁠ Acupuncture is the "A" in my TEAM (Therapist, Eating well, Acupuncture, and Meditation), and there are many evidence based reasons to consider doing acupuncture during treatment. On the blog, I'm sharing a conversation with Judy Tognetti, a local acupuncturist. ⁠ ⁠ Here's her explanation of how acupuncture works for fertility patients:⁠ ⁠ "Fertility acupuncture is based on the concept of using the nervous system, lymphatic system, and balancing hormones. By utilizing certain points in the body, we're able to adjust the hormones. If we use electrical stimulation, we're able to secrete neurotransmitters. At certain amplitudes, we can secrete serotonin, dopamine, whatever it is that we're trying to secrete.⁠ ⁠ Other than that, we're using needle points that are selected over the ovaries or over the uterus to drive blood flow, increase lymphatic circulation, and balance the hormones. Dr. Aimee shares the top 20 myths that she hears all the time around fertility. In this one episode, she'll break down the truth on each of the following topics. Are these fertility fact or fiction? Tune in to find out! It's easier to get pregnant after your first delivery. A miscarriage over age 40 means it's easier to get pregnant again and you should keep trying. Sperm doesn't matter. If you have one blocked tube, you can still get pregnant. If you have two blocked tubes, you can still get pregnant. Age of the sperm doesn't matter. Marijuana is totally safe and not harmful to your fertility. If you look amazing, your egg quality is too. As long as you see a fertility doctor and do IVF, you can have a baby. You don't need ovaries to get pregnant. A man can have a uterine transplant. IUI pregnancy rates are 50% or better. I don't need to know embryo quality. An ovarian cyst means something is wrong. IVF causes childhood cancer. Eating French fries and pineapple core increases implantation rates. Leaking fluids after sex means there is something wrong. Orgasms are required to get pregnant. You can skew gender based on when you have sex. If you know me, you know that I believe hope is an important part of anyone's fertility journey. And, as a doctor, I feel it's very important to explore every option that is out there with a patient so that they can become a parent. I loved getting to talk to Amanda Casgar of Hysterical about what the TTC journey looks like as we age, and speaking about the possibilities that open up when someone is ready to consider donor eggs. On the one hand, I believe in the fertility of every patient that I meet. I know that you may have been to other doctors, and for many people, your hope is to have a pregnancy with your own eggs. And on the other hand, I know that there may be a time after a patient has tried different protocols or done several transfers that they are ready to try something else. They may know that beyond anything else, they want to be a parent, and for their own heart they need to have tried every thing possible with their own eggs before choosing other paths. The truth is that any pregnancy is a miracle. DNA is not required to become a parent. And if your heart is set on it: you will become a mother, one way or another. Today, Dr. Kristin Brogaard is joining me today to talk about the Path Fertility SpermQT test. I'm so excited to have her share about the test, because as you'll hear her say "lots of infertility goes undiagnosed because men go undiagnosed, and when men go undiagnosed, women go through procedures that will not work." (Who else wants to see this on a bumper sticker?) While sperm were long considered to be just carriers of DNA, it turns out they are a lot more complex than that! Understanding the sperm side of the equation can help anyone trying to conceive better understand what's going on, and help them figure out the best plan to get pregnant. A few exciting highlights from our discussion: Male and sperm epigenetics play a big role in getting pregnant, and having a successful live birth. The SpermQT test can tell someone if their sperm is excellent, average, or poor quality. - Knowing this information can help you and your doctor determine the most efficient and appropriate next steps in your treatment or protocols. Understanding the quality of the sperm can lead to better outcomes. If it is "excellent," there is an increased likelihood of IUI working, even in cases where doctors thought sperm might be the issue with getting pregnant. If sperm quality is "poor," you may want to try making lifestyle changes to improve sperm quality, and retest. - Poor sperm quality often correlates with other longer term health issues for men, as sperm acts as a "canary in the coal mine." (an early warning system) Dr. Kristin Brogaard has a PhD from Northwestern University where she developed a novel epigenetic technology that allowed for a more accurate understanding of gene expression in health and disease cells. She is now the chief scientific officer of Path Fertility, whose goal is to raise the standard in male reproductive health, starting with male infertility. Thank you for joining us, Kristin! PCOS is one of the most common and most misunderstood conditions that we treat as reproductive endocrinologists, and this week I'm delighted to be joined on the podcast by Dr. Lucky Sekhon of RMA of New York to talk all about it. PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome, and that name can lead to some confusion. A lot of people think that they probably have cysts in their ovaries. The truth is that all women have multiple cysts (which are really small follicles that house eggs) in their ovaries. Those with PCOS have follicles that look like what we call a "string of pearls" on the periphery of their ovaries, and often have irregular (or no) cycles. Dr. Harvey Kliman discovered and created the Endometrial Function Test. He is Director of the Reproductive and Placental Research Unit at Yale and focuses his research on infertility and pregnancy complications. Today, on The Egg Whisperer Show podcast, I'm sharing an interview hosted by Dr. Nabil Arrach. I come from a family of OB GYNs (my grandfather and father), and I love being able to treat patients the way I would want my own family to be treated. This means that sometimes, patients come to my house to get shots. It means that I talk to people about what happens if the treatment we have planned doesn't work for them. Each treatment is personalized for each patient, and each patient gets my undivided attention. Because for me, it all comes down to love. Fertility patients want to bring more love into the world, and I feel I am the luckiest person around, knowing that I get to help them do just that.
