Today, Dr. Kristin Brogaard is joining me today to talk about the Path Fertility SpermQT test. I’m so excited to have her share about the test, because as you’ll hear her say “lots of infertility goes undiagnosed because men go undiagnosed, and when men go undiagnosed, women go through procedures that will not work.” (Who else wants to see this on a bumper sticker?) While sperm were long considered to be just carriers of DNA, it turns out they are a lot more complex than that! Understanding the sperm side of the equation can help anyone trying to conceive better understand what’s going on, and help them figure out the best plan to get pregnant. A few exciting highlights from our discussion: Male and sperm epigenetics play a big role in getting pregnant, and having a successful live birth. The SpermQT test can tell someone if their sperm is excellent, average, or poor quality. - Knowing this information can help you and your doctor determine the most efficient and appropriate next steps in your treatment or protocols. Understanding the quality of the sperm can lead to better outcomes. If it is “excellent,” there is an increased likelihood of IUI working, even in cases where doctors thought sperm might be the issue with getting pregnant. If sperm quality is “poor,” you may want to try making lifestyle changes to improve sperm quality, and retest. - Poor sperm quality often correlates with other longer term health issues for men, as sperm acts as a “canary in the coal mine.” (an early warning system) Dr. Kristin Brogaard has a PhD from Northwestern University where she developed a novel epigenetic technology that allowed for a more accurate understanding of gene expression in health and disease cells. She is now the chief scientific officer of Path Fertility, whose goal is to raise the standard in male reproductive health, starting with male infertility. Does sperm really matter? If you've been tuning in to all of the posts this week for "Super BALLS Week" you'll know that of course it matters!   It truly does take both sperm and an egg to make a baby. Today I'll review the sperm question a bit, and explain why it matters. AND, I'll give you a lot more info about how to improve sperm quality.   Here's the thing: I know that guys want to hear what they want to hear. They have selective listening. I'm not kidding when I tell you that I had someone email me recently and say "My husband's sperm tested out GREAT, and when we went over the results with the doctor we heard two different things. He thinks he heard our doctor say that it means he can just keep drinking, smoking, and enjoying marijuana and doesn't need to make any lifestyle changes. I heard something very different, which was that he should still cut back until we are pregnant. Can you help settle this for us?"   And while it's an unpopular answer (at least with the guys), my response is: Men should cut back or abstain from drinking, and smoking (marijuana too) if you're TTC.   Here are a few of the things I suggest to anyone bringing the sperm side of the equation to the baby making situation: - consider freezing your own sperm for future use when you are young. - get in the best shape of your life if you're trying to conceive. Sperm matters, and men's health is directly related to their sperm quality. - take some prenatal vitamins. Yes, really. Many of the same supplements that I recommend for egg quality also are great for sperm quality. - cut back on smoking, drinking, and drug use. Marijuana negatively impacts sperm. - don't cook your balls: avoid hot tubs, using your laptop on your lap, and other situations that may create high temps for the area. - find ways to cut back on stress, if you live a stressful life. He’s here to tell us everything you need to know in order to pick the right sperm for you, what to expect from a sperm bank’s supply and how to know you’re getting a quality specimen.  Angelo started out doing diabetes research after college, but when he saw a posting for a sperm bank he applied just for the heck of it. When he started at Seattle Sperm Bank, he was only a lab tech. But a year and a half in, they gave him the opportunity to run the operations and compliance of the business, and he is now the general supervisor. I’m delighted to have Dr. Ramy Ghayda join me today to talk about sperm, and the importance of sperm DNA Fragmentation testing and how to improve sperm health. When trying to conceive it takes both an egg and sperm cell. And, as you'll hear Dr. Ghayda explain, we now have access to more tests for male factor infertility, and they are more affordable and accessible than ever. He and I both believe it's very important for people, and fertility patients (everyone, really!) to know their options and to be educated about what they can do to improve sperm quality, to test sperm quality. Today, I’m excited to be joined by two members of the CryoFuture team: CEO and senior embryologist Sean Pae and Chief Operating Officer, Ginger Huang.
