"Orlando, My Political Biography" had its world premiere at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Bear. It later went on to become the only documentary of 2023 to play at the Berlin, Telluride, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals and is now nominated for Best First Documentary Feature at the 2023 Critics Choice Documentary Awards. "Occupied City" had its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its striking vision from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen ("12 Years A Slave") as he and his producing partner (and real-life partner) Bianca Stigter ("Three Minutes: A Lengthening") adapted her picture book "Atlas of an Occupied City, Amsterdam 1940-1945" during COIVD and shot on location in Amsterdam. The 262-minute long film was further screened at the Telluride Film Festival and the New York Film Festival (which is where this interview took place) and will be released by A24 theatrically this Christmas. McQueen and Stigter were kind enough to spend some time talking with me about the film, which has now been nominated for three Critics Choice Documentary Awards, including Best Historical Documentary, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. Nominated for a Gotham Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance, Howerton's work has garnered some of the best notices of his career as the sociopathic, results-driven Canadian businessman and former chair and co-chief executive officer for BlackBerry, Jim Balsillie. "The Holdovers" had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, where it received some of Alexander Payne's best reviews since "Sideways." It later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival to similar acclaim and was the runner-up for the Toronto People's Choice Award. Re-uniting Paul Giamatti with Payne, the film is one of the rare films from Payne that neither he nor his collaborator Jim Taylor wrote together.
