"Dumb Money"

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Lauren Cohen, Josh Parham & Dan Bayer to discuss the latest film from Craig Gillespie, "Dumb Money" starring Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D'Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley & Seth Rogen. Telling the 2021 story of the Gamestop short squeeze, which rocked Wall Street and made a lot of people fifty rich in the process, the film had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews but what did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the performances, Gillespie's direction, how well the film explains its complex financial premise, and how it compares to other films such as "The Social Network," "Moneyball," "The Big Short" and more. Interviews With "Flora And Son" Director/Writer John Carney & Composer/Songwriter Gary Clark

"Flora And Son" had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its breakout performance by Eve Hewson, the songwriting, and for giving the expected but welcome warm feelings a John Carney film can provide. The film recently screened again at the Toronto International Film Festival ahead of its limited theatrical release and global launch on Apple TV+. Director and writer John Carney and his composer/songwriter Gary Clark were kind enough to each spend some time talking about their work on the film. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the new indie musical film, which is now playing in select theaters and will be available to stream on Apple TV+ on September 29th. "Mean Streets"

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPictureFor this month's first throwback podcast review, I was joined by Giovanni Lago, Danilo Castro, and guest Larry Fried to discuss the first collaboration between Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese and Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro in "Mean Streets" to help us get ready for the release of their latest piece of work together in "Killers Of The Flower Moon." Shot on a small budget with very few resources, the movie may not have been the official feature directorial debut for Scorsese, but it would be the film that would put him on the map and lay the foundation for much of the greatness that would come after for both him and De Niro. Also starring Harvey Keitel in one of his best roles, David Proval, Amy Robinson, Victor Argo, Richard Romanus & David Carradine, the film is very much a snapshot of 1970s style filmmaking as much as it is a personal look at small-time crime in the streets of Little Italy New York from Scorsese's perspective. What did we think of it fifty years later? Tune in as we discuss the story, the performances, the themes, and scrappy filmmaking, which led to some innovative choices that helped give the film its original identity at the time of its release and more in our review. "A Haunting In Venice"

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Giovanni Lago & Brendan Hodges to discuss the latest film from Kenneth Branagh, his third Agatha Christie adaptation, "A Haunting In Venice" starring Branagh, Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Dornan, Kelly Reilly, Camille Cotton, Jude Hill & Riccardo Scmarcio. With a gothic horror twist on the whodunnit genre, Branagh reprises his role as Hercule Poirot for a third time, but after the mixed to negative reactions to "Murder On The Orient Express" and "Death On The Nile," what did we think of this latest one from the Academy Award-winning filmmaker? Tune in as we discuss the themes, ensemble, visual aesthetics, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. A Behind The Scenes Look At "A Haunting In Venice"

"A Haunting In Venice" is now playing in theaters and marks the third Agatha Christie adaptation by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, who returns for the third time as the world's greatest detective, Hercule Poirot. With an all-star cast that includes Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Dornan, Kelly Reilly, Camille Cotton, Jude Hill & Riccardo Scmarcio, the film cleverly takes Christie's 1969 novel "Hallowe'en Party" and gives it enough fresh twists to help it stand out from "Murder On The Orient Express" and "Death On The Nile." Below, you will find a series of interviews conducted with some of the film's crew, including Academy Award-winning composer Hildur Guđnadóttir, production designer John Paul Kelly, cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos and the CEO of the Agatha Christie Estate, the great-grandson of Agatha Christie and Executive Producer James Pritchard. Please take a moment to listen to these interviews and check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from 20th Century Studios. Episode 359 - The 2023 Telluride Film Festival, Venice Begins & Final TIFF Preview

For Episode 359, I am joined by Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, and guest Jorge Don Birnam. As per tradition, Jorge and I recorded our conversations on our way to the Telluride Film Festival in the car and coming home from the festival. In between our conversations about the lineup and the Oscar contenders that emerged from the Labor Day weekend festival, I connected with Josh Parham at the Venice International Film Festival to tell me what his experience has been like and also with Dan Bayer, who told me what he's looking forward to at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. Apologies for the audio quality, as I did not have my regular set up for any of these conversations, but I hope you enjoy them either way. Thank you all for your continued support (which you can also share by donating to the Entertainment Community Fund for SAG & WGA members here), and enjoy!Check out more on NextBestPicture.comFor more about Regal Unlimited - https://regmovies.onelink.me/4207629222/937isfrgNew subscribers can use code REGALNBP23 for 10% off of Regal Unlimited for the first 3 monthsPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastApple Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWA7KiotcWmHiYYy6wJqwOwAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices. "The Equalizer 3"

For this week's main podcast review, I was joined by Dan Bayer just a day before I left for the Telluride Film Festival to record so we would have something for you all to listen to today. We're reviewing the latest film from filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, "The Equalizer 3," starring Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, David Denman, Sonia Ammar & Remo Girone. The third and final film in Fuqua and Washington's violent, action-packed justice trilogy loosely based on the television show of the same name, the third outing finds Robert McCall trying to enjoy his retirement in Italy when trouble comes knocking on his door yet again. What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the violence, action, performance from Denzel Washington, and more in our review. "The Artist"

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPictureOur 2011 retrospective has come to an end. Our final review is Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist," starring Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller, Malcolm McDowell, Missi Pyle, Beth Grant, Ed Lauter, Joel Murray, Ken Davitian & John Goodman. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and it went on one of the most unlikely award season runs we've ever seen. Suddenly, in 2011, everyone was charmed and transported back to the age of silent film and fell in love with this movie. Does it hold up 12 years later? Tune in as Nadia Dalimonte, Sara Clements, Alyssa Christian & Daniel Howat, and I discuss the film's story, performances, its faithful recreation of the silent film era, awards season run, and more in our review. Thank you for all your support throughout this entire retrospective, and enjoy! Also, be sure to check out our other 2011 retrospective reviews for "War Horse," "The Help," "The Iron Lady," "Midnight In Paris," "The Tree Of Life," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," "Moneyball," "The Descendants," "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" & "Hugo."Check out more on NextBestPicture.comFor more about Regal Unlimited - https://regmovies.onelink.me/4207629222/937isfrgNew subscribers can use code REGALNBP23 for 10% off of Regal Unlimited for the first 3 monthsPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastApple Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWA7KiotcWmHiYYy6wJqwOwAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices.
